MARCH EDITION

CAPITOL CHAPTER NEWS

Next Chapter Meeting - Monday, April 10th at 6:00pm
Dirksen Senate Office Building 632
Speaker: Matthew Gilmore

MARCH HIGHLIGHTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • At the meeting on Monday, March 13, we heard from Amanda Hughes and Paula Feeney who recently published books.  Amanda’s “Who Wants to be Free - Make Sure You Do” answers the question how to keep up with the issues and stay involved in politics without getting overwhelmed.  And Paula’s children’s book “Squirrel Feeder” is the charming story of her husband at age 5 getting to know President Truman and becoming the official White House Squirrel Feeder.
  • Donate your new or used books at the April 10th meeting.  Your books will go towards the book sale by Juniors for boundary stones.
  • Monday, April 10th at 6pm: join Matthew Gillmore as he speaks about preservation.
"A major thrust of DAR preservation and commemorative efforts over the years has been the placement of markers at site of historical interest and import. While the DAR was in the vanguard of marking, and thus commemorating and interpreting historic sites, in the District of Columbia a similar effort began at the instigation of the the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in the late 1800s. I'll recount the origins of marker-placing and preservation efforts in Washington DC, offer some stories of how politics has interfered, and show off a recent and exceedingly rare (re)discovery."
