"Once a year, go some place you've never been before" - Dalai Lama from his 18 Rules of Living

Welcome to our April newsletter! I am now in Kathmandu for our Spring season and as usual it is good to be back in Nepal. It is great to see Thamel busy with lots of tourists and most hotels are fully booked for Spring season so there is no doubt that Nepal is back on track after the downturn following the earthquake in April 2015.

Most of our 2017 fixed date camping groups in Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan and Ladakh (India) are now guaranteed to run and are filling so I suggest you get in contact soon if you are planning to join one of our groups later this year.
Upper Dolpo to Jomsom GHT (Nepal) in May is now fully booked and our Lunana Snowman (Bhutan) in September/ October has only three places left.

Looking forward to 2018 we are already getting strong interest for several departures so I suggest if you are interested in
Kanchenjunga Circuit or Dhaulagiri Circuit in April, Upper Dolpo to Jomsom GHT in May, Ladakh Sky Trail GHT in August/ September or Lunana Snowman in September/ October you get in touch soon to register your interest. We have not yet opened bookings for these treks however will do so in May and I will be in touch with everyone who has sent in their pre trip applications to find if they would like to go ahead to book.

As we have received high demand for our
Upper Dolpo to Jomsom GHT departure in May 2018 we have decided to set up a second departure for late September 2018. The conditions and weather are likely to be different between Spring v Autumn however the advantage of Autumn is you should be able to see the iconic view of Upper Dolpo with wheat fields around the villages before harvest.

In Nepal, we also organise a full range of lodge based treks to Everest and Annapurna regions. We have treks using standard lodges as well as luxury lodges. Our popular luxury treks include
Luxury Everest Base Camp, Everest Luxury Lodge and Annapurna Luxury Lodge.

This photo of K2 above was taken from Broad Peak Base Camp where we camp on our
K2 Base Camp trek in Pakistan. Unlike many other operators who visit K2 Base Camp on a day trip from Concordia (12 to 14 hours round trip in glacial moraine, ouch!) we camp at Broad Peak Base Camp for the best views of K2. We are planning to organise two treks at the same time in July 2017: one group to K2 Base Camp & Concordia and for those people with mountaineering experience to K2 Base Camp & Gondogoro La.

Please get in touch if you would like to discuss any of our trips. I will be online and checking emails in Kathmandu until my return to London on April 22nd.

Trek on!

Himalayan Airlines (Nepal)

First direct flight from Kathmandu to Yangon

In February Himalayan Airlines started to operate direct flights from Kathmandu to Yangon. This is good news for people looking to combine their travels to visit both Nepal and Burma/ Myanmar.

After a trek in the Himalaya we would recommend a cultural tour of Burma and if you have time then enjoy relaxing at the beautiful beaches such as Ngapali or Ngwe Saung. Please take a look at
Himalaya Airlines website and The Mountain Co's Cultural Tours of Burma

Book recommendation for April newsletter

Bhutan: Himalayan Mountain Kingdom by Francoise Pommaret

Bhutan: Himalayan Mountain Kingdom is written by Francoise Pommaret. The author is a real expert in Bhutan having lived in the country for a number of years. This book is a must read at home before departure to give you a good background on the culture and history of this fascinating country.

As Odyssey the publisher explains "few outsiders know Bhutan as intimately as Francoise Pommaret; her guidebook takes you an incredible journey of discovery and adventure; her love of the people and the place shines through; her in-depth knowledge helps aid our understanding of why this unique land has long remained one of Asia's deepest mysteries and best-kept secrets."

Amara Ocean Resort on Ngapali Beach (Burma/Myanmar)

As mentioned above it is now possible to fly direct from Nepal to Burma (Myanmar) with Himalayan Airlines. In November 2016 we spent a month on a recce trip to this county (our third visit) inspecting hotels at both Ngapali and Ngwe Saung beaches. Take a look here for photos of Ngapali beach and as you can see it is certainly a lovely way to relax after a Himalayan trek!

In Ngapali there are numerous options however one of my favourites is
Amara Ocean Resort located in a quiet stretch of Ngapali Beach to the north of Thandwe airport.

TMC initiative for improving our service

Dehydrated vegetables for camping treks

Our new initiative for improving the quality of food on our camping treks in Nepal is to provide our cooks with dehydrated vegetables. Having dehydrated food on Himalayan camping treks works well as weighs less often about 20% of hydrated food and is long lasting up to six months.

I transported the dehydrator kit over to Kathmandu this Spring and have been busy training the cooks and kitchen helpers in how to hygienically prepare the dehydrated food. For Spring season treks we plan to supply dried carrots, okra, capsicum, onions, pumpkin, beans, peas, mushrooms etc. Yum!
