WANTED - New Website Author

Our facebook and website author is stepping down after five happy years on the job and needs to find a replacement.

You do not need to be an IT expert. If you enjoy playing around on the internet and with social media you will have enough skills to manage the waqa website. Phil is happy to work with the new author over a transitional period.

The Accessories workshop was very successful. Participants took home 2 or 3 completed projects and then asked for another workshop with more projects to make!

Thank you to all those who responded to my plea last month. I am pleased to say that Carolyn Konig Workshops are now going ahead with the exception of the appliqué class which needs a few more people to make it viable. If you like appliqué this is definitely a workshop you would benefit from and I welcome your application for another couple of weeks. This is a skill building workshop as well as an historical piece being reproduced. Do join us and enjoy this marvellous opportunity. There are still a couple more places in the other two workshops as well.

Jan Rowe’s ‘Quilting on the Right Side of the Brain’ workshop on 24th June is still open for you to join us. It will be a wonderful opportunity to find out just how your brain ticks when it comes to creating. Jan showed samples last month and unfortunately won’t be able to show them again as she is away now, but it is a case of anything goes, with direction from her.

I hate to tell you this but I am going to leave this position in October at the AGM. If you as a prospective workshop convenor would like to work with me for a while to see how I do things and what I look for in suitable classes for you, please come on board now and it will make the transition to another workshop convenor much easier. If you have any queries about the position please ask.

The Tentmakers of Cairo

are coming to Perth as guests of the West Australian Quilters Association.

Who are they? – In a nutshell, men who are also master appliqué artists. They are Egyptians who are attempting to maintain their centuries old craft of appliquéd panels which lined the insides of their tents. (See more on the website).

What will they do here? – They will present 2 one day interactive sessions where we can see how they work and experience their techniques that are centuries old by recreating one of their designs in the same way they do it.

When will this happen? – 30th and 31st July for the interactive sessions. More information on these will be in the next issue of the Quilters Quarterly.

2nd August: There will also be an evening of hearing their interpreter talk about their skills, their need to keep this tradition alive, and how they have managed to keep their incomes from disappearing due to modern copies. At the same time see them working as well as viewing an exhibition of their work which will also be for sale.

There will be more details on this in the Quilters Quarterly, including your invitation to attend the evening event.

The next Community Quilt Bee will be held at Alexander Park Craft House on 23 April 2017 from 10:00 am- 3:00 pm.

Everyone is welcome – why not introduce a friend to patchwork – just bring them along.  Come for as long or as short as you are available.

Plenty of borders, backing and binding to be done.  Tasks for all comers.

OUR FIRST SHOP HOP A RESOUNDING SUCCESS!

A couple of comments to share:
A hearty congratulations to Marie Mitchell and everyone associated with the recent Shop Hop. Three days of shopping for fabric, a quilters dream. Did we need more fabric? Most of us didn't but we gained so much more by participating. People who did not necessarily know each other were caught up in the 'hunt' and shared experiences. People talked to each other, which is not always the case with strangers but we recognized the common 'thread' and shared the experience. Thanks to the shop owners and all their wonderful staff who just went the extra mile to give us all a great three days. Am I poorer in the pocket? I sure am but I got so much in return in the camaraderie of the occasion. Oh and just by the way, today I found out that I had won the First Place Door prize from Quintessential Quilts in the form of a $100 Store Voucher. Be still my beating heart, more fabric! Dear Gwen and sidekick Lesley and organiser extraordinaire Marie,
Thanks to you all and everyone else involved for an amazing event. I went to all venues and had a lovely time.
Particular thanks to Kraft Daze for hosting the opening, to Handcrafters House for hosting the closing Anya at Quirky Quilts for her fabulous activity and to the Quilt Fairy and group in Midland for showing me how to paper piece with glue.
I especially liked the charm squares at each stop, the lucky dips at some stops, goody bags at some stops and numerous raffles.
I trust it was a rewarding exercise for all participants. Very best wishes to all, Annette Simper

Charm Square Challenge Raffle

Open to current financial WAQA members only. Non-WAQA members who participated in the Shop Hop and have subsequently joined WAQA by June 2017 are eligible to enter.

To enter this raffle, you must complete your choice of project using charm squares collected during the Shop Hop (Theme: Jewels). The completed item must contain 75% Shop Hop Charm Squares in the piecing. This does not include the backing, borders or sashing for the item which may be fabrics of your choice.

All entries must be fully completed and shown at the August Sewing Day or Night where each entrants name will be entered into the draw. One entry per person. The prizes will be drawn at the following Sewing Day in September.
