1. TOBACCO CONTROL PROGRAM
Meeting with new Director of Tobacco Control Department of The Union
Meeting with new director from The Union
6th February of 2017, on the occasion of Dr. Quan Gan, new Director of Tobacco Control Department, The Union is meeting in Vietnam. The Vietnam Public Health Association (VPHA) had organized a meeting to exchange VPHA’s information on tobacco control as well as information on Vietnam and the development orientation of VPHA in the future.

Within the activities of project “Building and strengthening networks within provincial governments, Fatherland Front and National Assembly”, the Vietnam Public Health Association had a meeting with Vice President of Dong Thap People’s Committee and the representative of Dong Thap Fatherland Front, National assembly delegation, People’s Council, and Health Deparment on March 9th, 2017.

In summary, all agencies and organization agreed that their interest is tobacco control activities, particularly with the confirmation from Mr. Doan Tan Buu – Vice President of Dong Thap People’s Committee.

Training courses on communication skills and guiding to health care for Senior public health volunteers in Thai Binh and Dong Thap provinces

The Vietnam Public Health Association has conducted two series of training courses, during March 2017, about communication skills on tobacco control and guiding to health care for Senior Public Health Volunteers (SPHVs) in Thai Binh and Dong Thap.

These activities received the enthusiastic participation from SPHVs from two provinces. After participating in guiding activities, sharing experiences, and group discussions, the SPHVs had changes to exchange their acquired knowledge from trainers that assisted in the communication activities in their area.

Closing workshop: Senior public health volunteers activities in Dong Thap from 2016 to Quarter 1 of 2017

In order to assess the activities that were implemented in 2016 and the first quarter of 2017, a closing workshop was held in Tan Binh commune, Thanh Binh district, Dong Thap province with the participant from SPHVs in An Phong and Tan Binh Communes, representatives from Dong Thap Public Health Association and People’s Committee.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong – President of Dong Thap Public Health Association said: “Activities of SPHVs in Dong Thap has achieved successes including some SPHVs quitting smoking after participating in the program and disseminate help to others”.

2. THE 9TH ASIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE ON REPRODUCTIVE AND SEXUAL HEALTH AND RIGHTS
Training workshop on improving writing skill for abstract submission to international conferences

Hanoi, 23 March 2017, the " Training workshop on improving writing skill for abstract submission to international conferences" was organized by the Public Health Association with the participation of nearly 20 researchers/ program officer working on sexual and reproductive health and rights. This workshop is in the framework of the 9th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights (APCRSHR9), supported by the Social Science Training and Research (STAR II).

The training workshop was successful after two day, participants have submitted abstracts to APCRSHR9 after receiving the support from trainers.

The 3rd meeting of the National Steering Committee

To prepare for the International Steering Committee meeting, which will be held in early April, 2017, the Vietnam Public Health Association held a national steering committee meeting in March 28th, 2017 to update, prepare for the conference, and discuss solutions to address as well as issues with the program.

3. OTHER ACTIVITIES
Training class for children about preventing sexual abuse by YPEER

From February of 2017, a series of extra-curricular classes called “Our body – our safety” was implemented; they are integrated learning activities for students ages four to ten and are conducted by YPPER. The Vietnam Public Health Association is organized with the participation of students from primary schools in Hanoi. The main purpose of these activities is promoting comprehensive age-appropriate sex education among children. The program attracted more than a hundred children participated in up to now.

 

The lesson is not too long (40 – 90 minutes) with the activities integrating English through song, drawing, groups activities with the guidelines for protecting themselves through cartoon or performing. The knowledge is brief and easy to understand to help young people recognize what is private in their body, the similarity in the privacy of girl and boy. Warning situations that identify the risk of harassment and abuse and determine what to do in such situations. “No mean no” is the definitive answer in these situations, screaming, calling for helps and running to find a responsible adult is essential for a baby.

 

These lessons were assured by parents and teachers of children. VPHA will continue conducted other series of this program and the content of the lesson is always tailored to the age group to get the most effective acquisition.
