Stories of Change
Documenting personal stories about climate impacts across Indiana

There is no single story of climate change. Beginning this summer, the Purdue Climate Change Research Center (PCCRC) will be gathering stories from Hoosiers across the state whose lives are being affected by changes in our climate. Selected stories may be featured in the Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment.

We are looking for people who live and/or work in Indiana who are willing to tell us about their personal connections to our climate. How does our climate affect your lifestyle and livelihood? What changes have you observed? What impacts have you faced? What does climate change mean to you, now and in the future?

Our climate affects how we grow our food, move our water, use our energy, and build our communities. Therefore we're interested in a broad range of topic areas.

IN CCIA Progress Update
Nine IN CCIA working groups are each developing a sector-specific technical report detailing the impacts of climate change on Indiana. With our first round of stakeholder reviews complete, our teams have focused their full attention on data analysis and writing their full length reports. On May 24, 2017, IN CCIA co-authors and contributors will gather for a half-day meeting to discuss their progress, key findings, and timeline for completion.

June 28-30, 2017 | Marshall, IN
The 38th Indiana Water Resources Association (IWRA) Symposium will focus on "Threats To and From Indiana's Water Resources," including several talks on climate change. Visit the IWRA website for further information.

Sept 13, 2017 | Indianapolis, IN
IN CCIA affiliates will be participating in the 2nd Annual Climate Leadership Summit, a daylong event that brings together community leaders across Indiana to discuss climate change concerns and solutions. Additional details will be forthcoming.

Sept 27, 2017 | Carmel, IN
The Carmel Green Initiative's Sustainable Living Seminar on Sept 27, 6:30-8:30 PM, will focus on climate change in Indiana and feature results from the IN CCIA. This event is free and open to all. Additional information is available online.

Did you know?
Across Indiana the average date of the last spring freeze is happening about 7-10 days earlier than it did 100 years ago. A similar trend is being observed throughout the Midwest. Scientists working on the Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment (IN CCIA) predict this trend will continue. By the 2050s, they estimate the statewide average last spring freeze will occur in early April, about two weeks ahead of today's average.

An earlier start to spring will come with a variety of impacts, some positive and others negative. An early spring could mean less money being spent on heating buildings and more time for outdoor improvement & construction projects. However, it also creates serious problems for migrating birds and an earlier start to the spring allergy season.
