Five Steps to Being Your Own Star Publicist

PEAVI member Moira Dann wears another professional hat — as a publicist (her firm is called Dann Fine Writing & Publicity Services). At the April member meeting, she will offer us her workshop called Five Steps to Being Your Own Star Publicist. This workshop offers tips on identifying the potential clients who might need your editing or indexing services, where they hang out and how to reach them. Hands-on, Moira will offer specific guidance on how to create the basic publicity tool: The News Release. We will write a few releases as a group. Laughter will ensue.

PEAVI spring workshop

Save the date: Saturday, May 27

PEAVI is thrilled to announce that our spring professional development workshop will be Usage Woes and Myths, presented by word aficionado and master editor Frances Peck. This all-day seminar will take place in James Bay (Victoria) at the Church of Truth on Saturday, May 27.

Here is a description of what participants will learn at this workshop:

Usage Woes and Myths with Frances Peck

You’ve sorted out imply and infer. You know it’s not all right to use alright. But what about more troublesome usage points, like the difference between may and might? Or such commonly misused words as dilemma and fulsome? Is it true that you should always change though to although, till to until? Is impact now officially a verb? For anyone intent on preventing (not avoiding) word errors and avoiding (not preventing) usage myths, this seminar will help. We’ll take an up-to-date look at some of the most misunderstood and contentious points of English usage, and identify helpful guides and other resources. Bring your top usage questions to share with the group.

More details about this workshop, including how to register at the early-bird rate, will be shared with PEAVI members soon.

Member news

Book launch

You are invited to the launch of Rhonda Ganz's new book of poems, Frequent small loads of laundry. Join Rhonda, a PEAVI member who is not only a great poet but also an entertaining reader of her poems, on Sunday April 9, at 3:30 pm at the Martin Batchelor Gallery, 712 Cormorant St., Victoria.

BC Book Prizes

The shortlists for the 2017 BC Book Prizes are out (http://bit.ly/2naH1mi) and several PEAVI members worked on two of the books listed. Judith Brand edited Joan Haggerty's The Dancehall Years, which is up for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, while Jean Layland, Maralyn Horsdal and Rene Layberry edited Michael Layland's A Perfect Eden: Encounters by Early Explorers of Vancouver Island, which is shortlisted in two categories, Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize and the Bill Duthie Booksellers' Choice Award. Well done, all of you!

We asked Judith and Jean to share a little about their editing experiences.

Judith writes:

The Dancehall Years is the sixth novel that I have edited for Mother Tongue, including Lucky by Kathryn Para, a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize in 2012. It's not uncommon for me to have never heard of the author, as in this case, but Mona Fertig, the publisher, told me that Joan was a very well-respected writer. So of course I had to Google her. After reading many great reviews, including one by John Irving, I felt more than the usual amount of insecurity (sound familiar?). Mona added that Joan had spent twenty years writing the book. Now I'm getting worried and wondering how light a touch would be appropriate. I remember finding more corrections and suggested changes than initially anticipated, possibly the result of the author's lengthy writing process. As always, I checked for continuity, accurate geographic names (using BC Government website), as well as any grammar, spelling, or house style issues. It was a delight to edit, and I look forward to meeting Joan at the BC Book Prizes event.

Jean writes:

Michael happens to be my husband, which presented both special challenges and special joys. I was the first of this book’s three editors, including Marlyn Horsdal and Rene Layberry for TouchWood Editions. I had learned a lot from editing his first book The Land of Heart’s Delight: Early Maps and Charts of Vancouver Island, which was also shortlisted for the Bill Duthie award in 2013, and the process this time was much smoother.

Nanaimo Spring Writes: Volunteers needed

We are looking for volunteers — especially from members north of the Malahat — to help at the PEAVI table during the Nanaimo Spring Writes Festival on April 29. The festival runs from April 27 to 30, in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre in Nanaimo. If you can come, please email Lenore: lhietkamp@gmail.com

March pub night

What a fun evening! Instead of the regular monthly meeting, PEAVI members gathered at the James Bay Inn Pub for an evening of fun, good food and excellent conversation. Thanks to everyone for coming out.

Interesting reads

We found these interesting and thought you might, too:

On the lighter side

  • This is fun . . . a statistician crunches the words of famous books in literature and popular fiction to determine, for example, what are Jane Austen's favourite words, which authors use the most exclamation points, and which authors use the most clichés: http://n.pr/2oGCU26
  • Who knew, eh? "A delightful Dictionary for Canadian English": http://bit.ly/2oa801S

Ideas? Content? Feedback?

Do you have content, ideas, or feedback you'd like to share, an idea for a monthly meeting topic or a suggestion for a particular speaker? We're all ears!
