UA Researchers to Study Airport Safety to Prepare For Next Infectious Disease Outbreak

The UA Regulatory Science Program has been awarded a contract from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to study airport public health preparedness and response. As principal investigator, Leila Barraza, JD, MPH, assistant professor in the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, will lead the research and development of a uniform playbook of best practices to be used by airport lawyers and managers when dealing with public health emergencies, including those involving communicable diseases.

UA Public Health Students Awarded Research Fellowships

MPH students Elizabeth Smith and Mario Trejo have been selected for the Cancer Epidemiology Education in Special Populations (CEESP) Program Fellowship this summer. Each will conduct a research project for 15 weeks during the period of May-August. Smith will be working at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System and Trejo will be working with epidemiologists at the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia.

Higher premiums trigger decline in Arizona insurance signups

AP | A doubling of individual health insurance premiums in Arizona for 2017 triggered a sharp decline in Affordable Care Act signups among people who don't qualify for tax credits that offset their costs, according to a new analysis by University of Arizona health policy expert Dr. Daniel Derksen. Data released by the federal government in March shows a 23 percent decrease in enrollment by that group. Dr. Derksen, director of the Arizona Center for Rural Health at the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, reviewed the data for this story.
