Christina Hendricks, a professor in the Department of Philosophy, has incorporated social pedagogies in her classes to help students connect within, across and outside courses. “The value of peer to peer connecting is partly that students will learn a lot not just from what they hear from other people but from what they tell to other people. Conversations with other students bring such different perspectives and interpretations,” she said.
From class to community: LFS core series builds community engagement
In the Land, Food and Community series, a collection of core courses in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, students work with community partners on a range of food-related projects. Not only do students gain hands-on learning experience, but they also have the opportunity to create real, lasting impact in their community.
Course Design Intensive helps instructors gain perspective on teaching
Registration is now open to post-secondary educators who wish to attend the spring session of the Course Design Intensive (CDI), to be held in June. Participants in the three-day intensive workshop work, individually and collaboratively, to design or re-design a course they are (or will be) teaching. The ninth annual Celebrate Learning Week (CLW) is a week-long initiative celebrating teaching and learning opportunities at UBC. There are 50+ events taking place that range from open lectures, information sessions, student advising activities, poster sessions, workshops and more. Henry (Roddy) L. Roediger, Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, will also give the keynote lecture at Celebrate Learning Week on Making it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning.
The Spring Institute offers educators in the UBC teaching community an opportunity to share innovative practices and research around teaching, learning and technology. The 15 workshops are interactive and provide participants an opportunity to network with colleagues. Topics range from active learning in a blended classroom to approaches to peer-based learning.
