NO PUBLIC SPACE WITHIN DULONG & RIGHT TO USE NATURE STRIP CONTESTED ISSUE

UPDATE: Dulong Autumn 'Plant 'n' Produce' Swap
Saturday 22 April 2017

Neighbour Day Morning Tea, 26 March 2017, results in a complaint to council and seems the community will be denied access to public space, likely to cause the cancellation of our 4th plant swap morning.

On Monday 3 April 2017, Sunshine Coast Council, sent a proposal to Dulong Futures to relocate the event to the opposite corner of Dulong and Thrushs Road. We believe the proposed site is unsafe and not suitable for a community gathering, and was primarily motivated to appease the complainant.

Since 2015, our first three swap mornings have been held at the Dulong Quarry (previously the Dulong State School), without incident. However, changes at the quarry has resulted in the quarry management refusing access as the area is classified as a 'mine site' and no public access allowed.

A meeting with Cr Rogerson reached a short term solution, a permit for the first six months of 2017, to hold a morning tea on Australia Day and Neighbour Day, and the autumn 'Plant 'n' Produce' Swap on the council owned nature strip - corner Dulong and Thrushs Road (behind the bollards).

By the end of the six month period, Cr Rogerson assured Dulong Futures, land for a community garden and informal meeting space in a central location within Dulong should be available. We've been waiting patiently on an announcement since 13 August 2016, and informed by Cr Rogerson, that negotiations are confidential, and no information can be made available until negotiations are completed.

Lets hope common sense will prevail, and we can work collaboratively, in the best interests of the community who recognise the need for public infrastructure in Dulong - opportunities and places for neighbours to connect.
