College Signing Day May 5th, 2017

"Deciding where you're going to college is exciting. It's a major step toward a person's future, and it should feel like an epic occasion!" ~ BetterMakeRoom.org

Ideas for how your school can participate in College Signing Day 2017:
  • Design a “Commitment to My Future” pledge for students to include actions that will keep them on the path to college
  • Coordinate a college field trip for students and families
  • Host a family college night with information about early ways to prepare for college
  • Take photos of students in a cap and gown with signs of what they want to be when they grow up
  • Take photos of students in College attire holding the College Signing Day Hashtag Signs you can find here and post to social media
  • Teach a college exploration classroom including students researching colleges they are interested in attending
HOW TO CELEBRATE IN ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS
  • Organize a student-led college fair
  • Host a college student to speak about their path to college during an assembly
  • Design a bulletin board with school staff photos and a map of where they attended college
  • Read students “Mahalia Mouse Goes to College” by John Lithgow (elementary)
  • Host a door decorating contest for classrooms to sign college themes on their classroom doors
  • Teach students college chants and perform them together at an assembly

CALL FOR GEAR UP STUDENT STORIES
All of our GEAR UP students have a story to tell. It's up to us to help them find their voice to tell it. Do you know a student who would be interested in sharing their story with GEAR UP Maine? Be it a story of success or struggle, we want to hear it and share it. It's so important now, more than ever, that our students' voices are heard. Please contact GEAR UP Maine Communication Specialist, Kayla Hopkins kayla@syntiro.org if you are interested in diving into this student story-telling adventure.
SCRIBE Tips & Tricks
April Scribe Tip/Trick
In May, data stewards will be asked to update their 2017 graduates.
Exporting a file from SCRIBE will save a ton of time!
The quickest way to do this is to do the following.

Export the Student Enrollment Export file.

Select the year and your school as well as the following:

Once downloaded, delete ALL fields except for the following:

Columns H, I, J, K, & L require a “Yes” or “No” answer.
Column M does not need an exact date. Feel free to use May 1, 2017 for all seniors for whom you know have completed their FAFSAs.
Add a field for column N called “HighSchoolGraduationDate”.
Be sure to eliminate all spaces between words in the field names!

THEN, import the completed file as a “Graduates” import file type.
