Message from the Director

Aloha,

Spring arrived in Hawaii, with an exciting agenda of activities and initiatives for SimTiki. Educational programs included the updated WISER Difficult Airway Program-Renamed Emergency Physician Airway Management (EPAM), UH JABSOM Internal Medicine Resident Elective with Dr. Sari Umekawa, FCCS in conjunction with the Annual SCCM Congress in Honolulu. Dr. Shu Sugita from Saitama Medical University International Center joined us for four weeks as a SimTiki International Academy participant. SimTiki International Academy program also recently integrated a new clinical opportunity for international participants in the shadowing program at Queens Medical Center. The Family Medicine Residency Progression OSCE completed its innovative ACGME skill validation assessment for the 3rd year! Graduating medical students got great news on Match Day, and participated in specialty specific Boot Camp workshops. In January at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) SimTiki displayed a poster on interprofessional education (IPE), by Mari Nowicki MEHP, RN; Dr. Berg and Dr. Ouchi conducted a workshop on learning from educational program design errors. In Japan, Akita University Medical School hosted our ongoing ASIST Research longitudinal mentoring program for simulation based educational research. St. Lukes Hospital in Tokyo was a wonderful host for FunSim in February. Farewell to Yui (Chutima Tohkaew BSN), who completed the fellowship in March and is already teaching with Simulation at a fast pace in Bangkok at Phramongkutklao Hospital.  Special thanks this quarter go to Dr. Masayuki Nogi (Queens), Dr. Kiyoyuki Miyasaka (St. Lukes Tokyo) Dr. Alan Hodgdon (EPAM), and Rina Ito (SimTiki).

The Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s (SSH) annual 2017 meeting called IMSH (International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare) took place in Orlando, FL from January 28 to February 1. It is the world's largest conference dedicated to healthcare simulation learning, research and scholarship, offering 250 sessions in various formats, from large plenary sessions to small, interactive immersive courses (IMSH2017.com). Perhaps most notable is that it’s the major networking event with over 50 countries represented and nearly 2,700 attendees. The first day’s opening party reconnected us with friends from Japan, Thailand, Canada, and across the USA.

Sessions are built in tracks to allow you to focus on areas that are of most interest to you: Patient outcomes-Quality & Safety, Research Methods, Assessment & Evaluation, Debriefing, Faculty Development, Course Exemplars, Interprofessional Education, Leadership, Program Administration, Technical Operations. This year we were treated to sessions on diagnosing and repairing manikins, 3D printing and rapid prototyping, simulation design for behavior change and a host of other topics.

Whether a newbie or a veteran instructor, technical operator you will find sessions and a network of professionals who passionately care about education.  SSH has a multitude of special interest groups that meet virtually throughout the year, then physically at IMSH. Each group works on projects and solutions in their particular interest area. One of the satisfying elements is the cross pollination between professionals working in technology, medicine, and education. As a member of the surgical SIG, our meetup blended surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, allied health professionals, educators and operations personnel to share low cost, homegrown models used in resident training. There are over 20 special interest groups, sections and affinity groups to join ranging from anesthesia to healthcare systems modeling and simulation.

As of March 31, 2017, there are 142 individuals from seven countries that are Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialists (CHSOS). We encourage those who are interested in certification for CHSOS or CHSE/CHSE-A to visit the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Certification site: http://www.ssih.org/Certification/CHSOS. Prep courses and testing are normally available at the meetings.

IMSH 2018 will be held in Los Angeles, CA from January 13-17.

Aloha Yui!
CPT Chutima "Yui" Tohkaew, our first BSN Research Fellow from Phromongkutklao Army Hospital Emergency Department, returned home to Thailand on March 1. She studied very hard during her time at SimTiki, and shadowed our Chief Simulation Specialist, Kris Hara, as Yui will be the first Simulation Specialist back in Thailand!  Her sunny personality will be missed greatly at SimTiki and we wish her the best of luck!  SimTiki has now had five International Research Fellow participants from Thailand, and we hope they will continue to promote & collaborate as simulation resources in Thailand.
