Kia Ora, and welcome to our Easter newsletter.

The year is flying by and I hope you are all planning some leisure over the long weekend!
So often we set out with amazing goals and run out of time. As we move forward with HSANZ I have tried to set clear goals that are achievable in the timeframe.

In our Options Service, we have been working from Progress for Providers and find the action plan section helpful. Here are some more tips to keep on top of your actions Helen's tips
Making organisational change takes time and we have found that establishing an agreed way of working that reflects values and has a clear purpose is key to ensuring we are all on the same page. If you would like to share your progress, or get some support with your plans, please get in touch. I am always happy to have a conversation.

If you have attended our training or completed our e-learning you can join our HSA Closed Facebook Group. This is a place to share learning around person-centred practice. If you haven’t received an invite let us know.
If you'd like to carry on the conversation about anything you read here, connect with us on:

We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Warmest wishes,

Starting Community Circles in New Zealand
Carol's thoughts

Although we are at the early stages of developing four circles, we are already excited by some of the results.  One woman shared with me - ‘I have never had any friends come over to my place’ and that her circle is assisting her to organise a social event at the group home where she lives.  She commented that she was enjoying working with her circle members because they were focused on her good qualities and what is important to her.  Having completed the e-learning, the facilitators are using a range of person-centred thinking tools to help focus conversations on identifying positive steps to achieve the purpose of each circle.  At the moment we are deliberately staying small so that we can learn from everyone involved.

Training update
Deborah and Marie have been on the road in March and April delivering the Level One, Person-Centred Thinking workshops.

Big thanks to  NZDSN for hosting these events.
The feedback from these courses has been really positive and Deborah and Marie have really enjoyed meeting a range of people from various organisations in New Zealand.

Some quotes from the course evaluations:
“Well presented and so applicable to my work, practical.”
“So many hand-outs that are really useful”
“I have a lot more knowledge and feel confident in implementing this in my work”
“E-learning prior to the course, very useful”

The ‘Person-centred Thinking for Everyone’ E-learning that each person gets free with their registration is a great resource.
There are also a range of other E-learning courses available to purchase from HSA, here are some of them:
Positive and Productive Meetings
Poor meetings are not a necessary evil – we can do something about them. Most approaches to meetings focus on improving efficiency – how to have fewer and better meetings.
Person-centred Reviews for Adults
This course introduces the person-centred review, which is designed to support people to remain at the centre of all decisions about their care and support.
Person- centred Risk
Person-centred risk management is the recognition that people in receipt of support are entitled to take risks to get the life that they want: to take advantage of opportunities even if they come with risk.
Developing Outcomes
This course will help you to use a simple, 7 step process to develop clear, specific, person-centred outcomes for the people that you support.

If you were unable to make any of the events hosted by NZDSN and wish to organise training in your area please contact Marie Calderbank, mariecalerbank@tautoko.org.nz

Helen's talking about...
Human services are often considered to be high stress places to work. An important aspect of wellbeing for everyone is to consider work/life balance.

One-page profile of the month
An important tool in planning is the use of one-page profiles that document what is important to the person, how to support them and how to keep them safe. People say they are valuable for helping new staff understand them, and staff have also developed one-page profiles to enhance their own working relationships. This month Gareth shares his profile some of you will remember his presentation at our HSA launch. Gareth's one-page-profile
