The National Mental Health Commission – Housing, Homelessness And Mental Health Public Consultation

Eastern Melbourne PHN were privileged to be part of a National Mental Health Commission’s stakeholder workshop and advocated for the role of primary care in supporting people at risk of, or experiencing homelessness.

The Commission is working to build a better understanding of the connections between housing, homelessness and mental health by a consultation process from 27 March to 24 April 2017.

The Commission has prioritised identifying and improving supports for people who are living with a mental health difficulty; for our population experiencing mental health difficulties, getting and keeping their own home is hard to achieve compared to the general community.

For the most vulnerable and unwell, cycles of homelessness, unstable housing and poor mental health can become their total life experience.

Consumers, carers, families and support people are invited to share housing and homelessness experiences in relation to mental health through this consultation.
For more information and to provide feedback, please visit the Commission’s consultation webpage.

Suicide and Suicide Prevention The Community Response

Last month, Eastern Melbourne PHN and Eastern Health held a community event to hear and gain an understanding, from people who have been impacted by suicide living in the Maroondah area.

People who had a personal experience with suicide; or families, carers and friends of people who have been impacted by suicide were invited to speak about their experiences and share their views on how the service and support system could be improved.

Both organisations will take what they have learnt from this conversation to use in their work to design better ways to prevent possible suicide and to support those who may be impacted by suicide.

EMPHN will use the information gathered to drive their Place-Based Suicide Prevention Initiative. This initiative is focussed on improving the capacity and pathways within the service system to better identify and support people experiencing suicide, and support families and carers impacted by suicide.

EMPHN is grateful for the participation of community members for sharing their personal experiences at this important forum.

New online resources to assist planning ahead for people with dementia

New planning ahead and advance care planning resources are now available online to assist community, aged and health care staff to highlight the importance of planning ahead for people in their care, particularly those in the early stages of dementia.

See their campaign video on YouTube.

The resources, funded through the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre (CDPC) are hosted on the Alzheimer’s Australia website and CDPC websites.

The resources include short videos from carers and a GP discussing their experience of planning ahead and why it is important.  Brochures are available, which can be used with people living with dementia, and their carers and families, who may be called on to make decisions when someone can’t do this themselves.

There are also resources for organisations such as guides for implementing quality improvement initiatives or conducting information training sessions.

For further information on the project please contact Adele Kelly via acp@hammond.com.au or phone: 02 8437 7310.
