World’s Parliamentarians Step Forward to Implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals

On Tuesday 18 April 2017, legislators from every region of the world will gather in Washington DC, to begin a global effort to implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the parliaments of the world.

The Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) will launch a major legislative toolkit, Parliament’s Role in Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals: A Parliamentary Handbook, to initiate this process.

GOPAC created the handbook in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Islamic Development Bank. The handbook launch will be part of the official agenda of the Global Conference of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. GOPAC will be represented by Akaash Maharaj (GOPAC CEO), and the UNDP will be represented by Charles Chauvel (Team Leader for Inclusive Political Processes, Bureau for Policy and Programmes Support, UNDP New York).

The SDGs are 17 Global Goals composed of 169 discrete targets, agreed to by the UN’s entire membership of sovereign states, after extensive international negotiations. They now form the framework of the international system itself, and will be the metrics by which human progress will be measured.

“The SDGs define the global consensus on the objectives the community of nations must achieve to preserve the human condition on our planet,” said Akaash Maharaj, GOPAC’s CEO. “But realizing those goals will require monumental political will and effort by national legislatures and national governments. Our new handbook will give legislators the tools, guidance, and experience of their peers, to help them turn international ambitions into national achievements.”

If you are a GOPAC member and attending the launch, please let the GOPAC Secretariat know and follow us on Facebook (@GOPACnetwork) or Twitter (@GOPAC_Eng). Please encourage any of your parliamentary colleagues to also attend and become members of GOPAC. Our official hashtag for any social media posts at the event will be #GOPACSDGs.
