Pulse of the President
Spring is now upon us and I trust that Lent has provided everyone an opportunity to accomplish some “spiritual spring cleaning” in preparation for the celebration of the Resurrection. How hopeful this season is as we are challenged to live the gospel and extend mercy to those most in need. The sacrifices of Lent express our freedom to choose the ways we will grow as people and as a community.
The spring musical, Mary Poppins, serves as the backdrop for this particular reflection. I had the occasion to be in the audience for all four performances, which helped attune me to the sometime subtle nuances of the play’s dialogue and the profound lyrics of the songs of Richard and Robert Sherman. The cast was brilliant, the music and choreography were exceptional, and the “big numbers” captivated large audiences each and every performance. There was certainly much for which we can all be proud. The true gift of the play, for me, however, was the transformation of Mr. Banks, due in large part to the wisdom of Mary Poppins and the guardianship of a chimney sweep. A tenderness grew within the dynamics of these relationships, and Mr. Banks was afforded the opportunity to grow, to grasp the truer meanings of life, and to take time to “fly a kite” with his children. There are lessons in here for all of us, I suppose, and the Easter triduum provides a yearly reminder of how purposeful our lives ought to be and of the significance of the relationships that bring us joy and help us grow.
Spring has once again brought new life to MPS, and as we begin the leave taking of the seniors, we prepare in earnest for the wonderful and talented incoming class of 2021. As the seniors begin their story elsewhere and the freshmen start theirs here at MPS, let us all be mindful to listen to the people around us who will help us see clearly. Enjoy Holy Week and the Easter season and continue to grow in God’s mercy.
Ed Curtin

Senior Juliette Morales received a $2000 Rotary scholarship, which was presented at last Wednesday’s meeting. Guidance counselor Kerry Sedelmyer submitted Juliette’s name for consideration. A team of Scholarship Trustees and Erie Rotarians review student applications and conduct formal interviews. An important part of the application is an original essay written by the applicant on a topic determined each year by the committee.

Every Laker
Now is an important time to pay it forward to help a young student become a Laker! Each MPS and Mercyhurst Seminary alumni should have received a letter from your Alumni Association president asking for your participation*. Please consider contributing today to scholarships to be awarded to new and returning MPS students right away for the coming 2017-2018 school year.
No gift is too small or too big. Together you can create great opportunities for students who truly need the help to make an MPS education a reality. If you and each and every Laker and Laker family and friend participate, imagine the impact you can make on young lives.
You can pay it forward at www.mpslakers.com/mpfund.
*If you did not receive a letter from your Alumni Association president this week, that probably means we don’t have your current address. It also means you’re missing out on your alumni magazines, reunion news, and other important MPS updates. Please take a minute to update your contact information at mpslakers.com/alumni-update.
On behalf of the students you are helping with your donation to the MP Fund, THANK YOU!!

Heading to See Hamilton!
Maia Magerle, aka Mary Poppins, randomly selected Geri Olszewski’s winning ticket at a sold-out performance of the play. Geri is in the background.
Congratulations to Geri Olszewski, winner of the Hamilton raffle. Her ticket was selected in a drawing held live on the MPS Facebook page last Sunday, at the last Mary Poppins performance. Geri is a super-volunteer who masterfully helps student performers with costuming at all of the MPS Performing Arts productions.
Thank you to everyone who took a chance to win the two tickets to a sold-out performance of Hamilton in Chicago, a two-night hotel stay, and $250 Visa gift card toward expenses. Thank you especially to Matthew Sherr and Sandro Barbosa, and Jim & Wendy Bahm from Networking Technologies for donating the fantastic prize package. All of the money raised helps to fund the recent MPS Performing Arts Center renovations.
