TRP Year-End Party is TOMORROW!

Spring/Summer 2017 Modules

Don't forget that you can take modules in the IMS too which will count towards the 8 that you need to complete MSC4010.  You can check the IMS module offerings and register via Portal, they are always announcing new dates, so check often (there is a module starting April 20th called "Emerging Trends in Global Health Research)!  TRP module offerings and dates are accessible via the student website (first year student site / second year student site).

Help us with Recruitment please :)

We are in the midst of recruiting our third cohort, how exciting!  We could really use your help.  Here is how you can lend a hand:
  1. Moni will shortly be sending out a promotional email that we would appreciate if you could forward to your former university department, your department at work, your lab mates, your friends and any other networks.
  2. Attend an information session and give potential students your perspective of the program, all the dates are listed on the TRP website here

InVision Software - Free Educational Edition for TRP students

For security reasons, your students need a code.  The code is: 56-73-13-19

It’s that simple. This is for new accounts. If a student already has an account, just have them email me, along with their expected graduation date, and I will make sure they get their upgrade.

Update from Dean Young on the MSB

April 7, 2017

Dear Members of the Faculty of Medicine,

I want to provide you with a summary of activities over this past week related to the Medical Sciences Building:
  1. Professor Scott Mabury, Vice President, University Operations, sent a message summarizing the facts associated with the three localized instances of asbestos in research labs and explaining the steps being taken to guard against reoccurrences.
  2. Professor Mabury and I sent a message through MedEmail that speaks more broadly about how the University and Faculty have responded to these incidents.
  3. The FAQ posted on the EHS website has been updated to provide additional information about air testing procedures and requirements.
  4. The organization of test results on Portal has been improved to make it more user-friendly. For more information on how to access these results, please visit our online MSB information hub: uoft.me/msb.

Innovating patient-centered solutions for women's health

Date: Thursday, April 13, 2017 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Location: Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Bayview Campus, McLaughlin lecture theatre (EG-61)
Speaker: Jessica Ching, Co-Founder and CEO of Eve Medical
Abstract: Cervical cancer and STI screening have long been tenets of women's health, but barriers like inconvenience, discomfort or lack of awareness can prevent many from participating regularly. Jessica Ching and Evan Moses founded Eve Medical, a Toronto-based medtech startup, with the goal of re-inventing the screening experience by expanding it beyond the clinic into the privacy and convenience of women's homes. In this lecture, Jessica will present her inspiring journey in developing the Eve kit and discuss the intersection between industrial design and health care.

Dear fellow grads,

We would like invite to our upcoming conference, Bodies of Knowledge: From Research to Practice. It is being held on May 11 & 12, 2017 at your very own Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) here at the University of Toronto.

Presentations can be data-driven, review papers, published papers, thesis proposals, dissertations, or works in progress. We would like to highlight that this conference hosts a very social and receptive atmosphere, as it is a conference run by graduate students, for graduate students, covering a broad spectrum of inter- and multi-disciplinary issues in health, sport, and physical activity. It is typically attended by grad students from various disciplines across Ontario and from other Canadian and international universities. We encourage graduate students doing research in biomechanics, cultural studies, education and curriculum studies, exercise physiology, history, kinesiology, medicine/nursing, motor control, nutrition, physiology, public health, sexual diversity studies, sociology, somatic studies and women's and gender studies, as well as many others, to submit abstracts for conference presentations.

This year, we are very fortunate to have Dr. Virginia Wright as our keynote speaker. She is a distinguished clinical researcher at Bloorview Research Institute whose research areas include the development and validation of outcome measures and the effectiveness of interventions in children's rehabilitation. We will also be hosting a panel discussion with a focus on returning to work and activities of daily living following concussion. This narrative medicine panel will feature leading researchers and student perspectives. Additionally, KPE's own Master of Professional Kinesiology students will provide a session with a focus on the diverse practice of professional kinesiologists and their current experiences in the field. Finally, all students are invited to a Toronto Blue Jay’s baseball game on Thursday May 11th, against the Seattle Mariners as well as our conference social at U of T’s historic Hart House on Friday May 12th.

This is a great opportunity for graduate students to get together, share thoughts, and network, so please come and join us! Stay tuned for information on how to register.

The abstract deadline is April 21st, and registration deadline is April 28th.

To submit and abstract, please fill out the attached form and return to BOKUofT@gmail.com but Friday, April 21st.
