A look inside Micro-Comm, Inc

Who is the voice on the other end of the phone? Where is the equipment made? How many people work there? These are questions often asked by our customers and in this edition of our newsletter we would like to answer those and more.

Since it's humble beginnings in the 1970's with three employees, Micro-Comm has grown to about 50 employees occupying a 28,000 square foot facility in Olathe, Ks. that encompasses every aspect of the company- manufacturing, design, service, sales and more.

Through our 40 plus years of existence, the Micro-Comm philosophy remains the same using a simple, but effective approach to solving problems while making sure every detail is addressed as every new SCADA system is implemented. This attention to detail requires careful coordination between all departments; let's take a quick tour:

New projects begin at the sales level. Here, Tim Ochs, a 37 year Micro-Comm veteran crunches numbers for an upcoming project. The Micro-Comm sales force also coordinates with a network of regional representatives that span from coast to coast. Four others work with Tim in the inside sales department.

After the sale, a project manager is selected to oversee the design, implementation and customer training through contract completion. As equipment is assembled, thorough testing and 'burn in' take place in the test area which allows everything to be fine tuned prior to delivery.

Behind the scenes, it takes an ongoing effort to handle accounting, shipping, receiving, procurement and logistics. Inventory management is a substantial task as over 2,000 unique items must be available and stocked to insure timely delivery of Micro-Comm SCADA system equipment.

Beyond sales and manufacturing, Micro-Comm also provides valuable in house training for customers who desire to learn more about software, hardware, troubleshooting/diagnostics and more. Group training sessions are offered serveral times per year.

Four decades ago, SCADA was in it's infancy. The equipment was simple- turn on a pump, fill a tank, and turn off the pump. A lot has changed since then. Over the years, Micro-Comm has followed changes in the industry that taken everything high-tech; remote monitoring by mobile devices, integrating with other manufacturers systems, and the ability to make complicated systems work under the most unusual circumstances.

This ability to think outside the box comes from selecting the perfect balance of qualified engineers, managers, salespersons and the behind-the-scenes office personnel to bring it all together. While some competitors have come and gone, Micro-Comm has stayed the course and looks forward to doing the same in the future.

A little known aspect of Micro-Comm: our employee dedication

Founder Jim Cote set the pace for this mindset as he, along with many others put in long hours- often including late nights and weekends to insure that every detail is addressed and covered on all projects, small or large.

This leadership has been well received and followed with loyalty. Add up the total employees time on the job and the final number is well over 750 years: a number that clearly shows compassion, dedication and a strong desire to succeed while offering the very best product and service available.

While it's impossible to cover everything about the internal workings of Micro-Comm, how about this- if you're in the Kansas City area, give us a call and we'll be glad to give you a complete tour and answer all your questions. It would be our pleasure!

Service after the sale
Well over 1,000 water districts use a Micro-Comm SCADA system that vary in size from a one tower/booster loop to a piping network than covers over 12,000 square miles. Granted, while the Micro-Comm system is quite reliable, things happen. Let's talk about the Micro-Comm service department:

You can provide the best equipment in the world but if you can't provide good service, you're doomed.

Over 90% of service issues can be handled through a simple phone call- and thank goodness, because many of our customers are in far reaching and rural areas. Also thanks to modern technology that allows us to remotely access the SCADA HMI computers and other equipment, problem solving comes a little faster.

Likewise, our service technicians are available for weekend and after hours calls to help get you through until parts arrive.

And, in almost every case, parts are delivered the next day which drastically reduces down time for the system operator. Parts are returned, tested and repaired- special care is given to any parts deemed 'troublesome'; if so, they are removed from inventory to insure no future headaches.

When it can't be fixed over the phone? We're on our way. The Micro-Comm service department it tailored to include some folks with specialized knowledge about computers, networks, PLC's by other manufactures and much more.

Whether it's a simple question or a major issue, simply call 913-390-4500. We're here to help!
