DCI elects Abdul Manaff Kemokai as new President, confirms 13 new national section

The 12th International General Assembly (IGA) of DCI elected Abdul Manaff Kemokai of DCI-Sierra Leone as new President of the Movement, and granted full membership status to 13 provisional national sections – Read the press release here.
In its final declaration, “For the Human Rights of Children”, the IGA reiterated the principles and the 4 thematic priorities (justice for children, violence against children, children on the move, and children affected by conflicts) set out in the newly-adopted strategy for the next four years. Moreover, the IGA sponsored individual declarations by DCI-Italy and DCI-Argentina on national juvenile justice systems and by DCI-Costa Rica on the national budget for children’s rights.
Implementing the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty

On the fringes of the Human Rights Council, DCI organized two side-events on the implementation of the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty (reports soon available on our website).
Manfred Nowak, independent expert leading the study, set out his vision and said that work is already under way to collect the data that will form the backbone of the study. Panelists also called upon States to fund the Study to ensure its effective implementation, a critical point that was reiterated through statements submitted by DCI, on behalf of the NGO Panel for the Study, and by the Netherlands together with 34 other States during the Council.
DCI @ 34th session of the UN Human Rights Council
In addition to the events on  the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, DCI co-organised, as part of the NGO Working Group on Violence against Children, a panel discussion on “What are the concrete implications for Ending Violence Against Children at national and local level?”.
