Dear <<First Name>>,
Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by all that is going on in the world, or that needs to be done at home or in the office? God's Word says his power is made perfect in our weakness (2Co12.9), because when we feel weak, it forces us to rely on God's strength. Thank you for praying for us as we endeavour to fulfil the vision of a Bible in 500 languages by 2050.  Have a blessed Easter, and please read and continue to pray.

God bless, Barry Funnell

Consultants in training

Alemu, Tamene and Tessema, sitting near Barry in the above photo, are being trained to become consultants for our 23 current projects in Ethiopia.

Barry spent 2 weeks together with them in March checking the Gospel of Luke in two languages, the  Gayil and Bayso. Barry has been mentoring them previously as well and this time he spent the first few days in charge of the checking and then the next several days observing and assisting them in honing their own checking skills. Soon all three will be working independently as qualified local consultants.

This will speed up the work as Barry needs an English back-translation in order to check the translations, and also needs his comments translated into Ahmaric as the translators are not proficient in English. These national consultants, however, can work directly with the teams in Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia.

Please join us in praise for:

She has been in Tanzania for three weeks so far to gain more field experience and will stay for a total of 3 months doing exegetical work with twelve teams. She will work will Barry for the next three weeks doing a consultant checking of John and Revelation with five teams.
  • Janet Van Aswegen spent three weeks with the Funnells in the UK and in that time managed to successfully relocate her widowed dad. He is staying in Bedford and is settling well.
  • The Jesus Film has been recorded in three more languages in a northern region of SE Asia.  Please pray for the B***sa, K***uri and P***ari peoples that their hearts will be open to the Good News of Jesus Christ.

The Basketo

The Word for the World UK board has agreed to raise funds for a  Bible translation project among the Basketo people of Ethiopia. We will be giving regular updates about them as a people group and also on their translation progress. Watch this space!

The Basketo language is an Omotic language which is spoken in the southern part of Ethiopia. The number of speakers is estimated to be about 111,000. The Basketo people follow a traditional belief system, and worship many kinds of evil spirits in the form of different objects like trees, springs, and hills. These evil spirits kill their children, and make them poor economically.

The above photo shows Basketo elders who are at a ritual ceremony trying to get relief from these evil spirits who are keeping their people in bondage. Many people are still living and dying without ever coming to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Please pray for them to come to know Jesus and come to understand the significance of the Easter message.

Please pray with us for:

  • The Basketo people are bound in traditional religion and strongly influenced by evil spirits. Pray that God's Word would begin to set them free. Pray as we continue to set up an Old Testament translation among them.
  • Please continue to pray for Alina from Poland who is struggling with depleted energy and not able to work a full day yet. Pray for her encouragement and strength as the road to recovery from cancer can be difficult.
  • Pray for increased funding for the expanding work in SE Asia, and pray particularly that the UK support base will be able to engage major donors in this vital work.
