Rapid Expert Assistance and Cooperation Teams (REACT) Training Program

Helsinki España, a NGO working for the defense of human rights, coordinates REACT, a six-week training programme on international peace operations intended for professionals interested in improving their knowledge of all aspects affecting a peace mission, including cross-cutting issues such as Human Rights, IHL, gender in operations, and protection of civilians. The teaching staff are trainers and experts from international organizations, including the UN, OSCE and NATO; diplomats and civil servants; military personnel; police officers; experts from the ICRC and humanitarian NGOs; independent consultants; and university professors.

The REACT [Rapid Expert Assistance and Cooperation Teams] course trains students in three aspects: conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict rehabilitation. Students review and analyse the main threats to international peace and security, consider the contexts in which conflicts arise, the key actors and the impact of conflicts on civilians. They also explore the mechanisms of international organizations for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts as well as for the protection of civilians and perhaps most importantly the course strengthens the capacity and confidence of participants to cope with and work in hostile environments. The course has prepared international experts for their work in peace operations led by the UN, OSCE, EU and other regional organizations.

As part of the course, students undertake the Hostile Environment Awareness Training course. An intensive 40-hour course that aims at training professionals to effectively deal with multiple threats present in hostile field environments. This training programme is certified by ENTRi (Europe´s New Training Initiative for Civilian Crisis Management) and conducted by the Guardia Civil at its Centre for Special Training.

Substantial scholarships are available. *Applications are being reviewed on a rolling basis beyond the previous deadline so apply ASAP*. Students can apply here and send queries to helsinkicursos@humandimension.com.

International Fellows Program

The International Fellows Program is a two-semester seminar open to students of all graduate degree programs at Columbia University.  The diverse perspectives and professional backgrounds that fellows bring to the program enrich their year-long common enterprise.

All fellows receive a stipend and study a curriculum with two goals – to examine the origins of the current international order, in which the United States has for decades played the leading role, and to look ahead to the new world that will eventually take its place, dominated by a larger number of actors, new problems, and approaches to problem solving that have yet to be defined. Weekly meetings of the International Fellows Program are supplemented by study trips to Washington, DC and the United Nations, where fellows have extraordinary access to senior policymakers, diplomats, legislators, journalists, and leaders of non governmental organizations.

Application Deadline: 5:00pm on Thursday, April 13, 2017. Click "application form" at this link to apply: https://sipa.columbia.edu/international-fellows-program/apply
