APRIL COFFEE NEWS

Meet Alonso and Alma
The past few months, we have been highlighting the many people that make Velasquez Family Coffee possible. This month,  we feature Guillermo's sister Alma and her husband Alonso. We also offer a coffee fundraiser for our friends at the Immigrant Law Center, and share research about shade-grown coffee.

But first, a quick reminder that we'll be doing our April coffee deliveries on Friday, April 14. If you live (or work) in Minneapolis or St. Paul and some suburbs, we can add you to our free delivery route. If you don't live in these areas, we're happy to mail coffee to you. Just get your coffee order to us before noon Wednesday, April 12 by contacting us at coffee@vfamilycoffee.com or ordering through our website. Our next delivery date will be Friday, May 12th.

Saludos -- Greetings!
From Alma and Alonso

This Month:
Meet our Coffee Farmers - Alonso Contreras
The coffee we sell through Velasquez Family Coffee is grown by three members of Guillermo's Family - two brothers and a brother-in-law. This month we feature Alonso Contreras, Guillermo's brother-in-law.

Alma's Full City Roast, our lightest roast coffee, is named after Guillermo's sister, Alma Sagrario Velasquez, who is an economics professor at the University of Comayagua. Her husband Alonzo Contreras grows excellent coffee at his farm near Las Crucitas, a mountain community in the same Comayagua mountain range as the original family farm in Rio Negro. Alma and Alonzo live in Comayagua and have one grown daughter.

Photos and Stories
When we were in Honduras in January, we took an excursion one day  to visit Alonso at his coffee farm where we found him hard at work. Below are a few photos from our visit.

Coffee Fundraiser for Immigrant Law Center
The Immigrant Law Center has been a coffee customer of ours for the past 10 years, so when we learned that several local restaurants were designating a portion of their proceeds to support them, we wanted to help too.

Immigrant Law Center
For the past 20 years, the Immigrant Law Center has provided free legal services to low-income immigrants and refugees in Minnesota. They also educate Minnesota communities and professionals about immigration matters, and advocate for state and federal policies which respect the universal human rights of immigrants. As you might imagine, the current political climate has dramatically increased demand for their services and provided urgent opportunities to stand up to protect human dignity and defend the Constitution. Designate your April Coffee Purchase
Your purchases of Velasquez Family Coffee during April can be designated to support the fine work of the Center.  Fundraiser prices are $12 per 12 oz  bag with $4 per bag going to the Immigrant Law Center. So you pay $2 more per bag and we match it.! Simply choose the "fundraiser" price option when selecting your coffee in our shopping cart and select Immigrant Law Center in the fundraiser list at the end of your order. Or let us know via email if you'd like your existing April coffee order to be designated this way. Please join us in supporting this important work!

VERY CONFUSED SANTA - On Sale!

Our supply of holiday flavors has dwindled down a few bags of just three flavors: Chocolate Hazelnut CreamConfused Santa, and Drunken Uncle - available mostly in ground and a few decaf only. While these flavors are still just as yummy, we know it is confusing to drink holiday flavors in April so we've lowered the price for the remaining bags to $6.00 while supplies last! Check our website for the latest inventory before ordering.

Birds and Shade Grown Coffee
Last August, we featured the gorgeous photos of coffee customer Therese Scheller's birding trip to Honduras. She recently passed along a lovely article about research being done on shade-grown coffee and its positive impact on migrating birds AND the people and communities growing the coffee.

Closing Words
"How could I help but fall in love with the planet's excessive, exuberant creativity and with people's generosity and care for one another?...Life is a good partner, willingly offering us the capacities we need. Life gives us a world rich in potential, where every new relationship offers us new qualities and skills. Life gives us a world of 'order for free,' capable of organizing itself, not from oppressive control but from inner coherence. Life gives us unending, incessant creativity, eager to create newness wherever it can, mostly to fill a need or adapt to changing conditions, but sometimes, I firmly believe, just for the fun of it (think tropical fish).”
