Freak-Physique Factor 2: Ultimate Muscle Volumization

In the Anabolic Reload routine many of the exercises start with an all-out high-rep set. Won't a few light warmup sets do the same thing?

Light "warmup sets" can do good things for muscle growth, but a single all-out high-rep set is much better on a number of mass-building fronts…

While light warmup sets improve blood flow to the target muscle and pre-exhausts a few slow-twitch fibers, one all-out high-rep set does those two things much better and also…

1) Primes more fast-twitch fibers to fire on the heavier sets that follow due to transitioning--fast-twitch activation on the last hard reps of a high-rep set

2) Produces more lactic acid pooling due to a long tension time--best for metabolic stress, one of the three keys to extreme hypertrophy identified by Brad Schoenfeld, Ph.D. (more on those in Chapter 5 of Anabolic Reload)

3) Better trigger for slow-twitch fiber growth

That last one is important because getting growth in BOTH the slow-twitch and fast-twitch fibers maximizes muscle volumization. In other words, you get a more overall "swole effect" for freaky muscle size.

Remember what researcher Jerry Brainum said recently: "It's now known that type-1 [slow-twitch] fibers are also capable of showing a significant level of muscular hypertrophy."

So don't neglect longer-tension-time sets--even if you choose to use them as a finisher rather than a starter...
