Cawaco is proud to announce that the winner of the Alabama Association of Resource, Conservation & Development Council's Youth Involvement Award went to the Blount County Education Foundation for their Summer Learning program, "Expanding Horizons". During the summer of 2016, over 1000 Blount County students of all ages were exposed to theatre, music, culinary science, gardening and horticulture, art, science and literature classes. These students scored 30% higher on re-entry exams than those who had no summer learning exposure. Congratulations BCEF! Learn more about this award-winning program here.

The OUTSTANDING PARTNERSHIP AWARD went to the Scott's Company for donating over $200,000 worth of high-quality top soil to Schools and Community gardens throughout the state in 2016!

The Scott's Company won the Alabama Association of Resource Conservation & Development Council's OUTSTANDING PARTNERSHIP AWARD for donating top soil to communities and schools throughout the state of Alabama. On behalf of everyone who has benefitted from these generous donations, Cawaco would like to thank the good folks at Scott's! The gardens of Alabama are much more productive because of this fantastic product!

Teacher Michael Craig of the Walker County Center of Technology won Cawaco's Teacher of the Year Award for 2016, for "going the extra mile".
Craig’s students have competed in a number of events, including the Barber Motorsports Electrathon, where they placed fourth in the high school division. His students also competed in the Jaguar Classic GreenPower race and placed third, after receiving a grant from Cawaco to purchase a GreenPower electric car kit, which they built for the competition.
Craig organized the downtown Jasper Electric car race, an event that brings people from all over the state to Jasper. Students have built a rat rod to be delivered to the University of North Carolina by the end of April 2017, and will be the only school outside of The Carolinas to compete.
In addition to classroom instruction and keeping his students involved in a number of learning opportunities, Craig has used his automotive skills to repair vehicles for those in need, providing them reliable transport.

WANT TO VOLUNTEER TO SURVEY TREES?
Cawaco is currently working on an urban forestry plan with The Nature Conservancy, the Alabama Forest Commission, Birmingham Public Works, Regional Planning Commission and Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
We will be looking for volunteers to help survey Birmingham city trees. Volunteers will learn to assess canopy cover, storm and insect damage, and record tree canopy for satellite data that will be used to regenerate the urban forest with native species. Call 205-623-0147 for more information.

We have been delivering seed throughout the state since early January.We have made a total of 56 seed deliveries, and driven over 1900 miles!

GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATORS
Support for STEM Education Initiatives:
General Motors: STEM Education RFP
General Motors is committed to fostering smart, safe, and sustainable communities around the world. GM has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) that will address STEM education challenges facing students (third-12th grade and college), with a special emphasis on women and minorities. Funded projects should help to achieve the following social outcomes: increase the number of students who earn a degree in STEM that matches market needs; increase the presence, achievement, and persistence levels for underrepresented minorities in the STEM field; and increase the supply of qualified teachers for teacher training in STEM-related subjects. Grants of $25,000 and above will be provided. Nonprofit organizations and educational institutions nationwide are eligible to apply. The deadline for letters of inquiry is May 12, 2017. GRANTS FOR MUSEUMS AND LIBRARIES
GRANT NAME:Museums Empowered: Professional Development and Capacity Building Opportunities for Museums
DEADLINE: May 1, 2017
AVAILABLE: Maximum of $250,000 over a period of up to 3 years

FUNDING USES: This Institute of Museum and Library Services program is a special initiative to provide professional development and capacity building opportunities for eligible museums.
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Units of State or local government, and private nonprofit organizations.

GRANTS FOR COMMUNITIES
Grants Promote Companion Pet Programs The Banfield Foundation is committed to improving the well-being of pets and communities nationwide. The Foundation’s Pet Advocacy Grants support nonprofit organizations that offer programs designed to keep pets healthy and in loving homes. Priority is given to programs that provide a direct solution to avoid surrender or separation of companion pets from families. Examples of funded programs include the following: basic veterinary care for financially-challenged companion pet owners, programs that help vulnerable populations care for or keep their pets, education programs that relate to keeping companion pets and their people together, and behavior modification programs to correct inappropriate companion pet behaviors so that pets may remain in the home. The application deadlines for this program are April 30 and October 31, annually. (The Foundation’s Veterinary Assistance Grants, Flea/Tick Grants, and Disaster Relief Grants accept applications throughout the year.) GRANT NAME: Drug-Free Communities Mentoring (DFC-M) Program
DEADLINE: May 8, 2017
AVAILABLE: Maximum of $75,000 per year for up to two years

FUNDING USES: The primary goal of this U.S. Department of Health and Human Services program is to assist newly forming coalitions in becoming eligible to apply for Drug-Free Communities funding on their own. It is the intent of the program that, at the end of the Mentoring grant, each Mentee coalition will meet all of the Statutory Eligibility Requirements of the DFC Support Program and be fully prepared to compete for the DFC grant on their own

GRANT NAME: AmeriCorps State and National Grants - Targeted Priority
DEADLINE: May 10, 2017
AVAILABLE: $13,830 Maximum Cost per Member Service Year (MSY). The general practice is to award no more than 50 member positions (slots) to organizations receiving an AmeriCorps grant for the first time.

FUNDING USES: The mission of the Corporation for National and Community Service is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic participation through service and volunteering. This competition seeks to prioritize the investment of national service resources in: Healthy Futures: reducing or preventing prescription drug and opioid abuse; and Safer Communities: strengthening law enforcement and community relations.
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Nonprofit organizations; institutions of higher education; States and local governments; and Indian Tribes. Organizations that propose to operate in only one state must apply through the Governor-appointed State or Territory Commissions.
