Sabaidee Pi Mai Lao (Happy Lao New Year)!

The New Year is upon us which means hot weather,  jubilant water fights, and blessing ceremonies. The festive mood makes it a great time to be in Laos! We also welcome the low season to step up our staff training and dive into important projects we have earmarked for 2017 including expanding our school outreach programme and strengthening our artisan network. Follow our progress by liking our Facebook page to view photos and receive updates!

We wish you all a peaceful, prosperous, and happy Lao New Year!

TAEC IS BACK IN CLASS!

It's a new year, a new team, and a new programme! We are excited to be back in school classrooms engaging local Lao youth on culture, diversity, and a new important topic - proper waste disposal and plastic bag usage! Our team has assembled an entertaining roster of activities including traditional music, videos, photographs, and dress-up in various ethnic costumes. Our plan is to visit 8 rural schools but we'd like to do more. To help TAEC support more school visits, please visit our website. Check out more photos of our visits here.

STRENGTHENING OUR NETWORK

This month, TAEC Co-Director, Khoun Soutthivilay, visited many of our handicraft producers in the southern provinces of Champassak, Salavan, Savannakhet, and Sekong over 12 days -- spanning silk, cotton, wood carving, backstrap loom weaving, four pedal frame looms, ikat, natural and chemical dyes, and beading! Face to face time with our artisans is invaluable and we look forward to hosting more of our groups here in Luang Prabang this summer! Head to our Facebook album to see the inspiring women behind our crafts.

NEW DESIGNS FOR SPRING AND SUMMER

Our handicraft team has been busy creating new designs and colour schemes for spring and summer. Come by the Museum Shop or TAEC Boutique in Ban Vat Sene to see our latest Phou Tai ikat patterned handbags and clutches! They are the perfect accessory for your summer holiday get-a-way! We also have an array of new pillow cover designs in standard square and lumbar sizes made by our Katu, Tai Lue (pictured), and Nge artisans. Not in Laos? Email us if you're interested in ordering from overseas.

Did you know?
Small sea shells stiched on clothing as embellishment are used to mark the wealth of the wearer. In landlocked Laos, sea shells are more difficult to obtain and therefore quite valuable in rural villages. You can see some of these ornamental tunics and skirts in our Seeds of Culture exhibit now in Luang Prabang.
