After the Saudi King's visit, will extremism be confronted?

During his recent visit to Indonesia, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud praised Indonesia's moderate Islam and the tolerance between religious groups in the country. He also indicated the importance of cooperation between the two nations in combatting radicalism and extremism. The irony of this statement given Saudi Arabia's religious climate is examined by a CRCS staff member. (Indonesian) Read more 

As we followed the news of the U.S. election within the context of the anti-pluralist turns across Asia and Europe, we wanted to know what our American friends are thinking and so we invited them to contribute their reflections on the CRCS website. This is the first of the Voices from America series. Read more 

In the aftermath of the three Actions of Defending Islam (Aksi Bela Islam 1410, 411, & 212) last year, the discussion arose again about how to deal with the Islam Defenders' Front (FPI): whether it must be disbanded due to its vigilantism or still maintained for upholding democratic values. Discussion with the Ministry of Religion: Combining Policy and Research

On February 14th, 2017, Dr. Samsul Ma'arif and Dr. Zainal Abidin Bagir from CRCS joined in a discussion hosted by the Center for the Study of Religion and Democracy (PUSAD) and the Research and Development Section of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion. The discussion on "Analyzing Policy related to Religious Life in Indonesia" covered topics such as the impact of the state's definition of religion on indigenous religious groups and the need for further research on policies and practices related to Freedom of Religion and Belief (KBB). According to CRCS researcher Budi Asyhari, a recent workshop for community development in Papua utilized local culture to strengthen social capital for peacebuilding. He underlined the potential of local stories, myths and sites that hold the potential to revitalize and develop peaceful communities in Papua. Sixteen participants from Merauke and Jayapura attended the workshop hosted by CRCS and Ilalang Institute February 21-25, 2017. (Indonesian)  Read more 

 CRCS EVENTS

Intersession Seminars 2017



CRCS welcomes graduate students and the public to enroll in the intersession seminars on religious and cross-cultural studies for credit or as auditors. Each course is offered for 3 credits (SKS) and conducted in English. Each meets twice weekly, 3 hours per meeting, for a total of twelve meetings. The courses will be held between May 15 and July 31, with a two-week break for the Eid holiday.
