Critical ML in Savannah!
On February 25, several members of the ACME board attended and presented at the Critical Media Literacy Conference, held at the Coastal Georgia Center in beautiful historic Savannah, Ga. Board members from New England were especially appreciative of the warm weather, which encouraged many outdoor conversations both before and after the formal program.
The daylong conference focusing on critical media literacy was organized by Dr. Bill Reynolds of Georgia Southern University and Dr. Brad Porfilio of California State University, East Bay. Participants and panelists came from a range of backgrounds, including higher education, primary and secondary schools, critical media studies, and education theory. Conference attendees listened to veteran educational theorist Peter McLaren’s keynote, in which he artfully discussed the role of critical pedagogy in current times, discussing the ways a critical approach can help us better understand our history and our present times. Board members Lori Bindig Yousman, Ben Boyington, Allison Butler, and Bill Yousman presented on a variety of topics. Bill Yousman discussed ways to use critical media literacy to better understand the Black Lives Matter movement, especially with connections to social justice issues. Butler shared data from her most recent research exploring how young people make sense of their social media use, arguing that now is absolutely the time for critical media literacy because while young people are intimately familiar with their use of social media, they do not have the formal skills to critically analyze their use or the power of social media as part of mainstream media. Boyington presented his framework for CMLE K–12 through project-based learning and responsive curriculum with the goal of fostering student agency in and beyond school. Lori Bindig Yousman presented on the neoliberal university and ways to navigate through higher education challenges in order
to bring critical media literacy to the conversation, specifically discussing the Media Literacy and Digital Culture graduate program at Sacred Heart University.
The ACME cohort was joined by friends and collaborators Andrea Bergstrom of Coastal Carolina College, Jeff Share of UCLA, and Nolan Higdon of Project Censored and the Global Critical Media Literacy Project (both partners of ACME). This unique annual conference created space for a fabulous discussion on critical media literacy, and participants and presenters left energized to continue the important work of CML in their various contexts. As Dr. Reynolds said during his presentation, “There are two ways to resist: tactically (what we're doing now) and street resistance. The two must coincide.”
