Fruits of Maturity: Find your way in your 50's 60's & 70's, explore elderhood and befriend your doubts

Hazel Hill Wood near Salisbury

Friday - Sunday: June 2 - 4

Growing older can be exciting, bewildering and scary. On this weekend we’ll seek a shared sense of the landscape of maturity, and what path we’d each like to explore in it.

Life in our 50's, 60's and 70's can feel as if we're off the map: society treats ageing with denial or prejudice, we can feel marginalised, and despite new freedoms the road ahead can feel bewildering. This weekend we’ll explore together of navigating the landscapes of later life: pooling our collective wisdom to find positive role models of elderhood, and realistic views of the upsides and the challenges, so that we can re-orientate our sense of self and our forward path.

This is a workshop group for men and women hosted by Alan Heeks and Jane Sanders. Cost £160 including food sleeping loft accommodation and camping.

Men Beyond 50: update

Alan Heeks writes:
Many of you on the circulation of this newsletter came through a connection with the Men Beyond 50 project which Max Mackay-James and I started in 2012. The project was quite active for its first few years, including workshops, a couple of ongoing men’s groups, and my book: Out of the Woods: a Guide to Life for Men Beyond 50: the book is still available. For more information please click here.

Since 2015, Max and I have both been focused on other projects, and MB50 has been quiescent. Apart from my book, the other major resource you can access is the website www.menbeyond50.net

I am intending to overhaul and update the website over the next few months, and will keep you informed on this. If you have material you would like to offer for inclusion on the website, please email me: max and I had always intended that this project should be a collective platform.

Alan's new book: Not Fade Away

staying happy when you're over 64!

Alan writes:
I'm excited to share news of my fourth book, which I have started writing. The catalyst for this project is that I need it myself: in 2018 I will turn seventy, and I've realised that I don't feel easy or confident about being in my seventies. When I started to ask around, I realised that I'm not alone, and that others may want a creative ageing guide for Baby Boomers.

You may recognise two pop song titles in my book title; all the chapters use song titles too. For example, Love Me Do - Reinventing Partnership; Good Vibrations - Managing Your Health; Won't Get Fooled Again - Change the Story.

My aim is to write a self-help book for people that don't like the genre; this book will be light and constructive, and also concise. There will be Resources lists for deeper coverage of most topics. One chapter will share others' experience of handling the late sixties, turning 70, and beyond: if you'd like to add your voice to this, please EMAIL ME.

Guest Blog: Men and Pornography

The phenomena of the use of pornographic materials has become a major issue in the lives of many men. The increased availability of materials especially over the internet has exponentially increased the usage of porn . Pornography is now the biggest sales product on the Internet!

Many men view pornography and would say that it is harmless, and would not see it as having an impact on their sexual relationships. Many women find it distasteful, and for some it is objectifying and unacceptable. The use of pornographic material is often a secretive activity and is difficult to speak about.  It is important that we can find a way to speak of it  ,and not to simply condemn it or to guiltily laugh about it.
