Milestone time - we have a fine cut!
Hi folks,

Yes, spring has sprung! And here at Tenner HQ, I'm delighted to report that we've reached a VERY big milestone in the life of The Atom: A Love Affair. After a huge effort from the whole team including editor Phil, composer Paul & archive producer Karen, we at last have a completed fine cut of the film.

What's that? Well, basically it means that whilst we still need to do final work on the sound & picture to ensure the film meets technical specifications for broadcast and cinema screenings, and will also need to master and clear the extensive archive footage and commercial music in the film, the creative and storytelling work is essentially done.

As those of you who've been following my journey over the past few years will know, this has been a long time coming - and it's a GREAT feeling!

We are now starting to flesh out our plans for the film's release and distribution hopefully later on this year.
So stay tuned for announcements over the coming months.

If you've been keeping up with the latest news in the nuclear power world, you'll know these are uncertain times for the industry, with once-mighty nuclear giant Westinghouse filing for bankruptcy and the French presidential elections raising questions over both nuclear's future role within France and EDF's involvement in the flagship plant at Hinkley C in the UK.

It certainly feels like the time is ripe for a detailed look at how we got to where we are now, so I'm excited about getting the film out into the world to start some conversations about nuclear's past, present and future...

In the meantime, I wanted to share some quick recommendations of 1) a book about nuclear power and 2) a documentary film pick.

Do let me know what you think - I'm hoping to try and send out some more regular updates including recommendations like these so if there's anything else you'd like to see, whether relating to the film, or nuclear power, or documentaries in general, do give me a shout at vicki@tennerfilms.com. So without further ado, here they are...

A book about nuclear power: The Rise of Nuclear Fear by Spencer Weart

Originally published in the 1980s as Nuclear Fear: A History of Images and updated in the wake of Fukushima, this was hands-down the most influential book of all the many, many titles I read whilst researching the film. Weart himself is a supporter of nuclear power and approaches the topic from that viewpoint but whatever your stance, I guarantee you'll find his analysis of how and why people feel the way they do about nuclear power to be fascinating and thought-provoking. I certainly did. Buy a copy here.

A documentary film pick: I Am Not Your Negro, directed by Raoul Peck
I was fortunate enough to get an advance viewing copy of this at the end of last year as a judge for the 2016 International Documentary Association Awards. Months later I'm still thinking about it. Based on an unfinished book by the extraordinary African-American writer and thinker James Baldwin, it is a poetic, visceral, moving, enraging and utterly gripping cinematic account of race relations in modern America. It's still playing in some cinemas and will be released on DVD and online next month. I can't recommend it highly enough.

And with that, I'll sign off till the next time. As ever, sending all my very best wishes and thanks for your continuing support of the film,

Vicki
