Weekly Update April 24, 2017
The CIRTL Network: 25 Research Universities Preparing a National Faculty to Advance
STEM Undergraduate Learning
The final CTSI Seminar for the 2017 Spring session will feature a presentation by Wendi Heinzelman, Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Dean of the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Vicki Roth, Assistant Dean and Executive Director, Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) is a national consortium of 43 research universities in the US and Canada that uses graduate education as the leverage point to develop a national Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) faculty committed to implementing and advancing effective teaching practices for diverse student audiences as part of successful professional careers. The goal of CIRTL is to improve the STEM learning of all students at every college and university, and thereby to increase the diversity in STEM fields and the STEM literacy of the nation.

The University of Rochester has been a member of CIRTL since 2011, providing on-campus and cross-network programming related to the CIRTL core ideas of teaching-as-research, learning communities, and learning-through-diversity.

           Through this presentation:
  • The mission of CIRTL will be presented;
  • The core ideas will be outlined;
  • An overview of the local CIRTL learning community on the University of Rochester campus will be discussed;
  • Describe ways that faculty and graduate students can get involved in CIRTL on campus and nationally
Lunch will be provided.  Please bring your own beverage.

Date: Thursday, April 27th
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 pm
Location:  Helen Wood Hall Auditorium (1W-304)

CTSI Emphasis on Team Science and Collaboration Influences Criteria for Faculty Promotions
With an increasing culture of team science, promoted by the CTSI, the most recent blog post discusses the revisions to the SMD faculty promotion criteria recognizing that faculty can make important scientific contributions beyond being principal investigator on grants or first or senior author on papers.

Kevin Fiscella, M.D., M.P.H., leader of the Team Science Function at the CTSI, and Jeffrey M. Lyness, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at URSMD, also recounted the faculty promotion criteria revisions in an article to faculty this week.

The revisions to the URSMD Regulations of the Faculty made in July 2014, formally recognized the importance of teamwork and collaboration in faculty promotion. The regulations describe excellence in research as “a sustained program of intellectually independent investigative work, recognized by competitively peer-reviewed grants as PI and/or as a collaborative investigator.” To read the full blog post, click here.

Understanding Your Microbiota:
Approaches and Selected Vignettes
Presented By: Steven Gill, PhD, Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology

Hosted By: Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBI) and Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI)

Our relationships with microbes begin before birth, where they represent features of postnatal development and contribute to many aspects of normal physiology, metabolism, immunity, and neurology, as well as to predisposition to diseases. The microbe–microbe and microbe–host interactions that result in assembly and endurance of our microbial communities (microbiota) are as yet largely uncharacterized. Identification of the microbiota as well as their genes (microbiome) and gene products requires a rapidly evolving toolbox of experimental and computational techniques.

This seminar will review experimental and computational resources and analytical approaches being used for microbiota projects at URMC and present data from ongoing studies of infant gut and respiratory microbiota.  Lunch will be provided.

Date: Tuesday, April 25th
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 pm
Location: Lower Adolph Auditorium (1-7619)

Community Health Mini-Grant Applications
The Center for Community Health is accepting Community Health Mini-Grant Applications for a grant to be awarded in May 2017. This competitive grant program began in February 2009 in response to faculty and staff surveys that considered ways to address barriers to pursuing community health partnerships. It has provided URMC and community partnerships with additional funding to address issues such as transportation, childcare, meeting space rental, refreshments for meetings, etc. Grant funding up to $1,000 is made on a quarterly basis.  Applications are welcome from either URMC or community partners.

The application deadline is Wednesday, May 10, 2017, 12:00 pm.
Click here for the application and instructions, or call 585-224-3062 at the Center for Community Health.

Congratulations to the February 2017 grant recipient, Ms. Carletta Carter, who was awarded $1,000 for her project, “Eastman Institute for Oral Health Initiative for HIV and Dental Care.” The objective of this venture is to provide education on the importance of oral health and improve oral health within the HIV community and the underserved population in the community. The grant funding will be used to produce brochures, flyers, and models of the human mouth.

Utilization of Epic for Research Studies
The Enterprise Patient Access and Revenue Cycle (ePARC) is a major URMC initiative that will bring patient registration, appointment scheduling, and billing into the eRecord system. The forthcoming ePARC implementation will bring changes to the daily activities of study coordinators and department administrators.  All research involving URMC patients that generates an order or utilizes URMC facilities will now be processed within Epic.

All study coordinators and department administrators are strongly encouraged to attend a Town Hall meeting to hear an overview of ePARC’s accommodation of clinical research study visits, clinical research billing, and new processes required by the URMC.

Additional Town Hall meetings will also be scheduled throughout the next four months regarding policy changes and training sessions. For questions, contact: michael.ritz@rochester.edu.

Date: Friday, April 28th
Time: 2:30 – 3:30 pm
Location:  Class of ‘62 Auditorium (Room G-9425)

2017 URBEST Faculty Mentoring Workshop: Recommendation and Nomination Letters
The workshop will be conducted by: Edith Lord, Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education

A panel of active nomination letter writers includes: Edward Schwarz, PhD, Jeff Lyness, MD, Lynne Maquat, PhD, and Vivian Lewis, MD.

Faculty at all levels, novice to experienced, tenure track, and non-tenure track, are invited to fine tune their mentoring skills in a supportive environment with their colleagues. The goal of this workshop is to share and discuss effective methods for writing strong recommendation letters for mentees and colleagues, and to prepare compelling award nominations. Specific letters to be considered: academic and non-academic jobs, fellowship applications, promotions, and convocation awards. Small groups will work to identify key requirements for letters of support and discuss mentee opportunities for professional growth.

Letter packets will be available for pickup with Tracey Baas, tracey_baas@urmc.rochester.edu before the session. To register click here.
