Spring 2017

Planning in Croatia, AGM in Austria, new Steering Group...

As Young FoEE celebrates its tenth (!) birthday, we’ve got updates from two network-wide meetings, a chance to join the agri-activism project in Wales this summer, updates from the working groups, feedback from Durban from the latest meeting from the Young FoEE/FoE Africa twinning project, and the launch of our new manifesto from the Equality & Interculturalism working group.

In February, our working groups were hosted by Zelena Ackija/Friends of the Earth Croatia in Zagreb for four days of planning, reflecting, and skill-sharing for the year ahead - see the updates from each of the working groups below!

A few short weeks later, we decamped to Austria for our annual network gathering and AGM - where our new steering group was elected! Find out all about them and how to get in touch here. Here’s Juta from the communications working group’s reflections on the event.

It was also Young FoEE's 10th birthday in Austria!

Insta-everywhere! Take over our Instagram account.

Our beautiful Instagram feed was taken over by Natur Og Ungdom/Young FoE Norway in March, and is now in the safe hands of Young FoE Austria. Is your Young FoE group on Instagram? Do you want an easy way to share your activities around the network (and get a load of new followers from Young FoEE?) Get in touch with Paul.

Building an intersectional climate movement with groups from Africa

YFoEE Manifesto for Equality & Interculturalism Launched!

YFoEE Manifesto for Equality & Interculturalism has been adopted by the network during our network meeting in March. The manifesto was developed by volunteers from Equality and Interculturalism working group who came together to build an explicit statement of our values and principles as an organisation. Check it out!

Last chance to apply for agri-activism course in Wales

This summer offers another chance to spend time volunteering at a Community Supported Agriculture farm in Wales to learn from Gerald Miles, an experienced farmer and activist, and to help him campaign against GM crops and pesticides. Read about the experience of last year's volunteers here and apply for this summer here.

Equality & Interculturalism Working Group

As a team, the Equality & Interculturalism working group, we decided that we wanted to set a solid foundation of our values by implementing our manifesto through engaging workshops and media. One of our upcoming projects is making sure that the Young Friends of the Earth Europe network uses our manifesto in practice, we suggested that we should make it compulsory for all YFoEE events to have A3/A2 printed flip charts stating the key notes and summary of our manifesto, so that participants can feel welcomed and realise that they are in a safe space.

For future projects, we wish to establish a series (via different mediums) called Building Bridges, where we intersect the struggles of marginalised groups with environmental justice. Our first of the project will be focusing on the LGBT community and it will be called Building Bridges: Queering the Climate – hopefully this will take place in summer 2018. As a team, we feel really motivated and enthusiastic about our plans because equality and interculturalism is something that we all care about and feel that it is needed in the network.

Climate Justice Working group: plans for 2017

During our meeting in Zagreb the Climate Justice Working Group talked about our general ways of working, about how to welcome new people into the group, about a potential CJWG further planning meet-up, and of course about all of the exciting activities for 2017! During the coming year, we would like to provide our members and local groups with some exciting “action recipes“ to ease and further support local, decentralised actions and resistance, as well as tidy up our CJWG section on the website.

Also, we want to create a ‘climate justice board game’ as a creative and interactive way of discovering the topic. Two of our milestones this year are going to be the summer camp in the Netherlands and the Friends of the Earth International Days of Action in October, where we can hopefully carry on with our activities around the topic of climate induced migration. We are especially excited about collaborating closer with our friends from the Equality and Interculturalism Working Group for this one! During the time of the COP23 later this year, we are going to be louder than ever by amplifying our voices to extending our support to grassroots and national struggles and making their work even more visible!

Food & Agriculture Working Group: campaigning for food sovereignty

This year the Food and Agriculture Working Group’s campaign will focus on Food Sovereignty. Since Food Sovereignty tackles many burning issues from access to resources and markets to agricultural workers’ rights and conditions, to healthy food, etc., the group has decided to spend 3-4 months on one sub-topic in order to dive deeper into the subject. Over the first four months the group will work on campaigning against GMOs. After gathering more knowledge the group will make ‘catchy’ infographics that can be easily spread via social media.

The working group will also work closely with this year’s young people doing agri-activism placements in Wales this summer, who will campaign against GMOs and glyphosate with Gerald Miles in Wales. Read about the experiences of last year’s activists here...
