Dalat International School News - Penang, Malaysia
21 April, 2017 - The Slot Machine in your Pocket

I am sure that some of our parents, especially those with middle and high school students, wonder why we have such strict rules when it comes to hand phones and MP3 players. Many international schools allow students to use their phones throughout the day and few have restrictions like you see at Dalat.

Hand phones have become a big part of our lives with the majority of people and teenagers having not just a hand phone but a smart phone with many features and programs that are useful for so many things.

So why does Dalat continue to restrict kids from using their phone (and MP3 players) during the school day? There are some reasons related to opportunities for cheating and distraction but the main reason is that we value community.

There is nothing wrong with phones in that they are a useful tool for life. The problem, and one of the main reasons we restrict the use of phones and MP3 players, is that they can hinder community. Have you ever been at a restaurant and seen a group of friends or a family sitting there with everyone staring at their phones? Or how inviting is it to try and talk with a person if they have head phones in their ears and are listening to music? Inadvertently, by focusing on their phones or putting their headphones in their ears, the person is communicating to those around them – leave me alone, I am not a part of community right now. People who are staring at their phones or listening to music, whether they are intentional or not, remove themselves from what is happening around them while they engage with their device. They step out of the community for that time. As a school, we feel that during the school day we want our students to be fully engaged with those around them and fully part of our community.

It is amazing how much hand phones have become such a significant part of our lives. Most of our older students regular check and use their phones all hours of the day (except for during the school hours, of course). It will be the last thing they do before going to bed and the first thing they do the next morning when they wake up. The average person looks at their hand phone 110 times a day. Many of you would say there is no way you do it that much but I think we would be surprised and even shocked if we kept track how many times we do check our phones. A reason why this is happening is because computer and social media companies are hooking us through tricks and human psychology. I would strongly encourage you to watch the following interview by journalist Anderson Cooper on the show 60 Minutes called “Brain Hacking” which reveals how intentional and motivated these companies are in trying to make your phone an addiction. If you are like me, after watching it, you will be glad to know that at least during school hours, our kids are not playing the slot machine we call hand phones.

Have a great weekend,

There will be no school on Monday, 24 April in honor of the Malaysian King’s Installation. It was declared a national holiday recently by the federal government. The Installation Ceremony of the Malaysian Sovereign is the Malaysian equivalent of a coronation, marking the beginning of the reign of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the Malaysian head of state. (source Wikipedia)

However, there will be some high school activities scheduled that day including AP practice tests and a Junior Class workday.

Classes for all divisions will resume on Tuesday, 25 April.

Teacher Appreciation Week
교사 감사 주간
感激教师周
The school year is quickly coming to a close, and the time has come for us to show our wonderful teachers how much we, both parents and students, appreciate all their love and hard work.

This year, Teacher Appreciation Week will be 2–5 May. We only have school Tuesday–Friday that week, following a long weekend, so don’t forget. Each day will follow a common theme, but feel free to show your appreciation in any creative way you want. Here are a few ideas if you aren’t sure what to do.

2 May, Tuesday - FLOWERS (bring a flower - a real one, your own creation, or something that makes you think of flowers)
3 May, Wednesday - SOMETHING SWEET (baked goodie, chocolate, special Starbucks drink/gift card, or even a hug for the teacher)
4 May, Thursday - BLESS THE CLASSROOM (consider asking your child’s teacher what is most needed or appreciated)
5 May, Friday - WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT and THANKS (handwritten note or poem)

Some classes might work together as a group and get a gift from the whole class, OR you might want to bless your teacher as a family. Let your child do extra jobs to earn some money so they can buy a small gift or contribute their allowance towards something if they want. However you choose to do it, let’s each make an extra effort 2–5 May to show our wonderful teachers how much we appreciate them.

Junior Senior Banquet
The biggest night on the high school calendar is the JSB when the Junior Class honors the Senior Class with a dinner and program at a local hotel. This year’s JSB will be Thursday, 27 April. The juniors have been working hard all semester to prepare decorations and entertainment for the seniors, sophomores, and staff. The students and staff have been taking ballroom dancing lessons during lunch.

The entire community is welcome to view the JSB walk on Thursday, 27 April from 4:30 p.m. when the students and staff go down to the Chapel and then again about 5 p.m. when they come back up to load the buses.

The Junior Senior Banquet is part of the Junior Senior Class Experience that teaches our students education for life. It teaches them to set goals, work together as a team, plan an event, take responsibility, honor others. These skills can’t be learned in a classroom, and that is why JSB is so important to our curriculum.

Parent Night: Fourth Grade Transition to Middle School
중학교 예비 4학년 부모 모임
父母之夜:四年级转入中学
The fourth grade students are preparing for a big transition: moving to middle school! They are understandably excited and nervous at the same time. All of the fourth grade students have already been paired with seventh grade buddies so that they will have a familiar face when they come to middle school. This week, the students also had the opportunity to spend some time in the fifth grade classrooms with the MS Counselor and Principal. They learned about what to expect and had a chance to ask all of their burning questions.

We know that this is also a hard transition for many parents. To help you with that, we have scheduled a fourth grade parent night on Wednesday, 10 May, at 7 p.m. in the chapel. This is a great time for parents to meet the MS Principal and Counselor and find out some of the major differences between elementary and middle school. We also encourage all parents to read the Parent Student Handbook again, especially if this will be your first Dalat Middle School student. There are a lot of policies you’ve probably skimmed over in the past that will not impact you and your student directly. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Chois or Ms. Wood.

Moms can make the difference as they reach out to God in prayer- moms just like you. Please join us for an hour of prayer for Dalat. We gather to pray for Dalat students, faculty, staff, administration, and board. We would be so delighted to have you join us!

Introducing “Cool-Ohms”
"쿨 옴스"를 소개합니다
“Cool-Ohms”介绍
In the fall of this year, six students expressed their interest in forming a science club. They enjoyed science fair projects of the past and appreciated having an opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in class. Ke-Erh Huang (11) remembered classic conditioning experiments on mice, and Kylie Toh (12) recalled making a potato gun with PVC pipe one year.

Back in the fall the students researched the possibility of doing a project for the Penang Science Cluster/Makers Fest, but were not able to get a project ready in time for the November event. They began to work on a seed germination project that was started last year by the sophomore Biology class. This project involves storing seeds in CO₂ over various periods of time and testing their germination rates.

Although the work of the project can be a little tedious, admitted Jia Qi Tan (11), it is really neat to work on a project with real application for farmers in Southeast Asia. The data that this group collects will be sent to ECHO, an agricultural development NGO. The data that the Cool-Ohms team collects will help support ECHO’s efforts to learn how to best store seeds for farmers. Adam Bicksler from ECHO’s Asian Impact Center affirmed how helpful it is for Dalat to contribute data to their efforts. The more data they collect, the better training they can provide to farmers about possible storage techniques in Southeast Asia.

Although Cool-Ohms will lose three graduating seniors this year (Denise Chai, Kylie Toh, and Jing Low), the rest of the team hopes to continue exploring scientific projects next year. Jung En Seo, Ke-Erh Huang, and Jia Qi Tan are hopeful that more students will be interested in science projects that can make a difference and will join them.
