Spring 2017 Kent ISD MTSS Update
In an effort to be the first choice for educational services that allow every student in every classroom to achieve every day, Kent ISD is committed to providing a continuum of supports for local districts as they implement an integrated academic and behavioral Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework.  Our team works to develop local leadership teams who facilitate and support quality systems reviews resulting in sustainable changes that increase achievement for ALL students.

MTSS Accomplishments
  • Kent ISD continues to maintain a score above the target score of 80% on the Regional Capacity Assessment. The results of this assessment guide our planning to continuously improve supports to local districts.
  • Crossroads Alternative High School in Kentwood has seen and increase in the course completions each semester since implementing PBIS!
  • Caledonia middle schools are working to improve adolescent reading strategies through a state-wide grant from Michigan's Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative (MIBLSI). More information can be found in this School News Network article.
  • Kent ISD has successfully supported the behavioral data integration for both Lowell Area Schools and Thornapple Kellogg Schools. Both districts have eliminated the need for dual entry of behavior data.
Are we doing what we said we would do?
Fidelity assessments focus on support systems that the adults in a building are putting in place in order to improve student outcomes. The schools use tools called Tiered Fidelity Inventories to  self-assess the their implementation of behavior and reading supports. The scatter plot above shows the fidelity scores for elementary buildings' behavior supports compared with their behavioral outcome data of average discipline referrals per day.
What's Next?
  • Crossroads Alternative High School has been selected as an exemplar for PBIS implementation in an alternative setting. They will be presenting at the National PBIS Forum in September with Dr. Bob Putnam from the National Technical Assistance Center for PBIS and the May Institute.
  • The MTSS team is working closely with the Project AWARE grant to increase the number of formal district partners as well as to expand the implementation of PBIS in current partnering districts to include school mental health services through KSSN.
  • In order to save districts 10%-20% on costs for SWIS, the system used to track discipline referrals, Kent ISD will be consolidating and managing the billing process.
  • A representative from Kent ISD's MTSS team will be working with a select state-wide group to develop guidelines for the MDE's new seclusion and restraint policy. A representative was on the team that revised the current policy to meet the requirements of the legislation released last December.
