Frog PondNet eDNA survey back for another year
River in countryside
In 2013 we tested a new technique for detecting the presence of Great Crested Newts – environmental DNA. Using this technique it is possible to achieve the same level of detection as the labour-intensive traditional methods, with only one daytime visit.

Over the last two years of our PondNet project, we have set up and run the first eDNA national monitoring network for Great Crested Newts. Now thanks to funding from Defra we are able to undertake a third year of survey.

Snail BDS Variable Damselfly Survey
The big give
What’s happening to the Variable Damselfly? Is it declining or under-recorded? Could water quality be part of the story? Genevieve Dalley from the British Dragonfly Society explains, and asks you to help.

The Variable Damselfly is found in and around well vegetated ditches, canals and ponds, rarely in flowing water habitats. It is scattered but uncommon across mainland Britain, with hotspots at sites such as the Ouse Washes and Somerset Levels. The species is widespread across Ireland. Despite being well known from a handful of sites, the species’ distribution still remains something of a mystery.

Newt Living Waters
Living Waters: a New Forest Catchment Partnership project to protect and restore freshwater wildlife in the Beaulieu catchment

The freshwaters of the New Forest – the rivers, small streams, ditches, mires and a multitude of ponds – is one of the most important freshwater areas in lowland England. These places support outstanding wildlife – there are eel and trout, Great Crested Newt, rare plants like Pillwort and Small Fleabane and a great diversity of invertebrates including the declining Medicinal Leech, Mud Snail and the Tadpole and Fairy Shrimps. In fact it is so important, we believe that we should help people enjoy it, celebrate it and, even more importantly, we should make sure we look after it well into the future. As part of Living Waters, we’re doing just that in the River Beaulieu catchment, working closely with the Beaulieu Estate and its tenants.

April 2017

Hello!

What a glorious time of year! We hope you are enjoying these warmer, lighter days. Our glorious freshwater wildlife is certainly responding. We've had over 1300 records added to our PondNet Spawn Survey, and latest reports are all of tadpoles now - the spawn has all hatched.

Please keep reporting your sightings, and take a look at the many other ways we're working to protect freshwater wildlife.

Can you help us find clean water in Wales?

School groups are helping us with our scientific research

Clean water habitats, free from pollution, are the best sites for freshwater wildlife. We have a few Clean Water for Wildlife School Activity Boxes available for schools in Wales to take part in current scientific research. Would you like to take part?

Leave a gift for wildlife

Have you considered leaving a gift to charity in your will? Freshwater Habitats Trust are now working with Remember a Charity to help get our details to solicitors and vice-versa. Flagship Focus: The Lizard

A successful Strawberry Stonewort survey

Our series about the wonderful Flagship Pond sites continues. This time our regional officer Fran Dunn introduces some special sites on The Lizard. This Cornish peninsula is home to the rare Strawberry Stonewort and other plants only found in temporary ponds.
