Love your work. Love your life.
Dear Friends,

What a week! On the personal front, my 6yo learned to ride his bike and he lost his first tooth. Professionally, highlights included a keynote to a dynamic group of professionals at Amgen and a lunch with Harvard’s first female President. And then there were the messy moments. The argument with my husband in front of the kids, a printer quote that came in way too high, a missed appointment. The highs and the lows, weekly, daily, hourly. Never forget that we all have them.

SAM'S CENTS

Messy Moments

It is 11:31 a.m. and you are in the midst of preparing for a big presentation with your boss when you get a call from your daughter’s school saying that she is sick. Instantly, your world feels like it is crumbling and you start questioning your life choices, still thinking of yourself as a failed juggler with balls dropping all around you. At this moment it is hard to see that you have made these choices rationally, and that your pie looks the way it does for good reason.

This is not the time to question your choices, but rather to accept that life gets messy, and this is a messy moment. It will pass and your life will return to its natural equilibrium once your child gets better and the presentation is complete. Making more of this moment would be like trying to talk to your child about his sadness in the middle of a tantrum. Empathize with yourself until the messy moment passes, at which point you will have the perspective to reflect on it rationally. This is also not a moment for guilt. It is a time to accept that life is imperfect and the more you can turn it into a story along the way rather than a story that levels you on the way, the quicker you will get through it.
