European border authorities: neglectful and abusive
The Intercept reports on the European coast guard, which has failed to rescue thousands of migrants - as a leaked internal document reveals that the EU deliberately keeps its rescue boats away from where rescues are needed. The non-governmental organizations that have filled the gap are now accused of encouraging dangerous journeys, as well as smuggling operations. On Open Migration, Judith Sunderland explains how such accusations “ignore history, reality and basic morality” and instead urges for more mutual trust, better coordinator and active EU patrols.
The fate of those who have disappeared remains unknown and unaccounted for. In Tunisia, mothers and wives demand the truth, having lobbied for an inquiry commission into the disappearances for the past six years.
The land borders are no better. A new report by Oxfam states that refugees and migrants have been beated, stripped, robbed, and given electric shocks by European border authorities. The abuses were especially widespread in Serbia and Macedonia, the report finds. To read the full report, click here.
