European border authorities: neglectful and abusive

The Intercept reports on the European coast guard, which has failed to rescue thousands of migrants - as a leaked internal document reveals that the EU deliberately keeps its rescue boats away from where rescues are needed. The non-governmental organizations that have filled the gap are now accused of encouraging dangerous journeys, as well as smuggling operations. On Open Migration, Judith Sunderland explains how such accusations “ignore history, reality and basic morality” and instead urges for more mutual trust, better coordinator and active EU patrols.

The fate of those who have disappeared remains unknown and unaccounted for. In Tunisia, mothers and wives demand the truth, having lobbied for an inquiry commission into the disappearances for the past six years.

The land borders are no better. A new report by Oxfam states that refugees and migrants have been beated, stripped, robbed, and given electric shocks by European border authorities. The abuses were especially widespread in Serbia and Macedonia, the report finds. To read the full report, click here.

As more Turks move abroad, Syrians are kept out

Nil Mutluer, former sociology department chair at Nisantasi University and one of the Academics for Peace, speaks about her move to Germany and how it became coopted by Western media outlets - this time, being the voice to her own story. Uncertain about Turkey’s political and economic future, more and more white-collar Turks wish to move abroad - expected to increase after Sunday’s referendum.

While they leave, others are unable to come in. The construction of the wall on the Syrian-Turkish border has been completed, the Turkish Ministry has announced.

Photojournalist Giulio Piscitelli has documented migrants' attempts
to reach Europe for five years. A series in Newsweek.

The story of a trafficked girl, from Nigeria to Europe

Every year, thousands of young Nigerians cross the African continent, facing forced labor and sex work and risking death. The New Yorker shares the story of one of these girls as she embarked on the journey to Europe.

In another heartbreaking piece, the New Yorker sheds light on the terrifying fate of refugee children in Sweden, who have fallen unconscious after being informed that they will be deported from the country.

Thousands leave Venezuela, as economic ruin hits the country

Across the Atlantic, a different exodus is taking place. Over the past year, more than 150,000 Venezuelans have fled the country, while most of the upper and middle class had already left the country after inflation rates hit nearly 500% - making even the most basic food items unaffordable to many. Most are crossing to Brazil, as others take perilous boat journeys to Caribbean islands such as Bonaire and Curacao.
