Second skunk with rabies found in Lakewood

A second skunk in Lakewood has been confirmed to have rabies, and it was collected near West 26th Avenue and Simms Street. The first skunk with rabies was found near Wadsworth Boulevard and West 16th Avenue. In both situations, the skunk encountered dogs, which are now on 45-day home observation periods.

Five skunks with rabies have been collected in Jefferson County this year. These cases are a reminder that it's cheaper to vaccinate your pets and livestock than handling the consequences of an encounter with wildlife that has rabies. The public is strongly urged to vaccinate all their domestic pets and valuable livestock and to ensure vaccinations are kept current.

Now that rabies has been found in wildlife in Jefferson County, any domestic animal encounter with any wild animal will be treated like an exposure to a rabid animal. Pets without a rabies vaccination or an expired vaccination will be classified as high risk and be required to undergo a 120-day quarantine, which can be costly.

For rabies information, visit Jeffco.us.

City Council Update

Monday, April 17: 7 p.m. Study Session on short-term rentals

Roundup from the April 10 Regular City Council Meeting: The Eaton Community Foundation and the Lakewood Bicycle Advisory Team gave a presentation on a unique program for older adults that provides a bicycling experience to those who can no longer ride by allowing them to be a passenger in an unusual rickshaw pedaled by a volunteer community member. Council appointed board members to the city’s business improvement districts and set the April 24 Regular City Council Meeting as the date for public hearings to consider approving funds for the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force and for detox services at Arapahoe House. After public hearings, council approved municipal judges’ salaries for the year and the action plan for using an annual federal grant.
