#10: VCU AD McLaughlin won't be the next AD at his alma mater, Boston College. McLaughlin has reportedly signed an extension to stay in Richmond through 2024 & removed himself from the Parker-led BC search. A 1995 grad from Chestnut Hill, the Rams AD has led the department since 2012 after a six-year stretch atop Niagara's portfolio. The extension will be his third with VCU. (link)
#9: The program cuts at Buffalo continue to be critically reviewed by The Buffalo News. Men's Soccer, a side that went 12-4-3 last season & had "the highest collective GPA among UB's sports teams" gets a thorough "postmortem." Columnist Tsujimoto points to those who questions the department's use of money for the "New York Bulls Initiative" under former AD White, putting FB student-athletes up in hotel rooms before home games & bands booked as part of the 'Stampede Square' pre-game FB promotional push. There's a lot here, including a close of, "It's a shame UB chose not to support men's soccer as well as the team represented the university." (link)
#8: You'll want to get a hold of the latest SBJ as a media panel of notable names round-tabled at the MBB Final Four to discuss pressing issues. USA Today's Wolken wonders if the arrival of three new F4 participants is an anomaly or shift given 65% of spots since 1970 went to 16 programs. ESPN's Williams notes the reality of how expected TV ratings drive some exposure decisions. Others point to the disparity in what hoops can generate versus its gridiron peer & how Presidents make liner choices, which "leaves the door open" for the Gonzagas of the world. (link); Feedback on NCAA Prez Emmert centered around his lack of real power given the move to 'Power 5' leaders setting most of the agenda. (link); When asked which ADs they'd choose to run a department, Michigan State's Hollis, Ohio State's Smith, TCU's Del Conte, Alabama's Byrne & Virginia Tech's Babcock all get mentioned. (link); On the North Carolina academic saga & NCAA investigations, many on the panel believe probes should be outsourced to proven law firms. None think there's real teeth to the coming revenue distribution model based on academic metrics. (link)
MANDTVR: Recruitment in Virtual Reality
#7: Boston College Prez Leahy has been presented with three finalists for the AD position, according to TMG College Sports's Blaudschun, who cites a source indicating that one candidate is "outside the normal athletic director/administrator box and the two others are either ADs from non-Power 5 leagues" or senior associates from Power 5 schools. Other than that, BC seems to be keeping a tight lid on the search, but Blaudschun expects, barring something unforeseen, that an announcement could come by the middle of next week. (link)
#6: Tailgate Guys makes a big personnel move, recruits Florida Executive Assoc. AD for Internal Affairs & longtime Gators leader Howard to join the surging hospitality company as COO. CEO Duffey: "Chip has a unique ability to align his team by creating a culture of commitment and character. We’ve observed this over the past five years as a partner of the University of Florida Athletics and we’re excited to welcome Chip and his family to the Tailgate Guys team." Both current UF AD Stricklin & Emeritus AD Foley call Howard "invaluable." Howard will relocate to Auburn this summer & begin on August 1. (link)
#5: FB attendance data is out from the 2016 season & Football Scoop provides the quick lists of the Top 10 for both FBS & FCSMichigan on top of the former at an average of 110,468 per game with Ohio State, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU Tennessee & Penn State also all above 100K. Montana well ahead for the latter group at 25,377 per game. James Madison, Florida A&M, Jackson State & North Dakota State topped 18K. (link); Here's the full data set from the NCAAEastern Michigan, Miami (FL) & USF all surged by 10K+ year over year, seven others were up by 5K or more. (link)
#4: Challenges for new Georgetown MBB HC Ewing include getting up to speed on NCAA rules & regulations as he already stepped slightly outside the lines once. (link)
Spectra by Comcast Spectacor: Engage Your Fans & Keep Them Coming Back Again & Again
#3: New Tennessee AD Currie already had two key senior-level jobs to fill & now there's a third as Senior Assoc. AD Vollmar announces he'll pursue other opportunities. Vollmar had oversight of the Vols FB program for the past couple of years after stints at Michigan, Alabama, Syracuse & Michigan State. (link)
#2: The Topeka Capital-Journal's Haskin is reporting Kansas State will hire Iowa Deputy Athletic Director Gene Taylor as the new AD in Manhattan. Taylor will exit Iowa City after two-plus years assisting with the Hawkeyes department after a long stint as AD at North Dakota State. Haskin says the official announcement will come later today. More in D1.ticker tomorrow morning. (link)
#1: A cross-section of applicants for the Central Michigan AD job: Eight have AD experience, nine are from a 'Power 5' institution, nine are currently Senior Assoc. ADs & 19 of the 37 are from a DI school. Skype interviews are set for next week with plans to bring three finalists to Mt. Pleasant in May & a likely appointment by June 1. Remember, no search firm partner for the Chips - which it says saved $100K - so it'll be quite interesting to see how those involved are noted in the media. Search committee chair & VP of Advancement Martin: "We've made great progress. I've been involved in several searches around the country, and this is the most impressive prospect pull I've ever seen." (link)
