Spotlight on Success This little one was working hard to communicate with his family but, due to his motor impairment, was struggling to speak and use his hands to sign. That’s when his SoonerStart team looked into him using a communication device. The family trialed an iPad with various apps for speech generation through ABLE Tech and found one, GoTalk Now! He is now able to communicate through the iPad and choose what he wants. He is using some short sentences, and he's learning to request help and greet people with his device. He will point to the device at times to let his mom know he wants to ask for something. With continued intervention he should be able to express himself very well in the future.
AT Training Report
On April 10th, ABLE Tech teamed up with the Oklahoma State Department of Education and Tulsa County SoonerStart to provide an in-person training to further support the success of infants and toddlers with disabilities in Tulsa County. The training content focused on funding assistive technology and transitioning it with kiddos as they turn three and enter school services.
Approximately 40 people were in attendance and all received an updated funding notebook including information sheets, blank forms, and sample forms to guide them through the process of acquiring AT for kiddos on their caseloads. The group participated by sharing stories of successes and barriers to acquiring AT which helped those in attendance further understand the process. In the future, ABLE Tech plans to support other counties in this way as the Statewide Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP) scales up to expand its impact across the state!
