Speakers and more

Hello fellow Material fans! Our speaking line-up is falling into place — we've confirmed a few names and want to share with you the news.

Amber Wilson

Amber Wilson is a budding designer continually getting excited about everything to do with the Web. With her background pursuing a Master's degree in Child Psychology, she'll bring a unique perspective on both where we've come from and where we'll go.

Her appreciation and love of both design and science from a really young age will shine through as she tells us about the finer points of what the Web is made of!

Solidwool: Hannah & Justin Floyd

Hannah and Justin had an idea. What if they could find a new way of working with wool and so perhaps bring something back to their small market town, a once thriving part of the woollen industry?

They learnt that the coarse wool from hill-farmed, upland sheep had dramatically lost its value in recent years. Historically used in the UK carpet industry, demand had declined and the wool was now considered almost worthless, a by-product of sheep farming.

So they started to play. To turn the way wool is worked on it's head.

The end result is Solidwool — a strong, beautiful and unique composite material. Think fibreglass, but with wool.

They know better than anyone else, literally down to the micron scale about wool. That deep understanding is what we're going to talk about in relation to knowing your material and its affordances.

Recently the pair were on BBC2's Back to the Land with Kate Humble. If you're in the UK, you should check it out on iPlayer.

What's the Icelandic weather like?

More than one person has asked about the weather in Iceland in August. We can assure you, it is great weather, we have the best weather, just look at the charts.

You can expect around 14 °C / 57 °F, which might sound cold to those in more mid-latitudes, but at our angle to the sun and UV rays that's T-Shirt weather. They wouldn't have a marathon if the weather wasn't going to be good!

For all the runners

August 19th is also the Reykjavik Marathon. For the less brave, there is a half-marathon, 10K, 3K and kids' marathon. The registration fee goes up July 3rd, so sign-up today!

What's Next?

We are confirming the next few speakers, searching out great sponsors, adding in a few more activities during the day and maybe even a surprise or two left. Please expect another update within the next two weeks!
