HARLEM & POLAND CONNECTION

This engaging new quartet explores Harlem's musical & cultural heritage from a Polish perspective. Featured artists are woodwind virtuoso Maestro Martin Piecuch on saxes and flutes, pianist Onaje Allan Gumbs, Dorota Piotrowska on drums, and bassist Marcus McLaurine.

The Polish/Harlem Project was inspired by the book “Harlem” written by Polish journalist Tomasz Zalewski, who spent many years living in Harlem and participating in its musical life. Along the way he embraced the sounds of many iconic jazz artists such as Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington. His “Harlem” tells a story of the rich fusion of jazz played in Harlem for decades, which draws from many diverse cultures, including Latin.

This account of an outsider from a small central European country gives a fresh take on Harlem’s rich cultural and musical heritage, and inspired the Polish/Harlem Project. Come and enjoy the unexpected musical fusion!
