The Israel Museum was honored that President of the United States Donald J. Trump gave his public address in Israel from within the Museum galleries on May 23. The Museum served as a fitting backdrop for President Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's references to the Museum's rich collections and role in preserving the culture and heritage of the Jewish people.
President Trump was presented with a replica of a 2,500 year-old bronze menorah from the ancient synagogue at Ein Gedi, with decorative features similar to the Menorah of the Temple in Jerusalem. The original is on display in our Archaeology Wing.

Ai Weiwei: Maybe, Maybe Not – Featuring powerful and visually captivating works addressing compelling issues of human rights and freedom of expression by prominent Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Ilit Azoulay: No Thing Dies – The culmination of Ilit Azoulay’s ongoing Museum exploration project inspired by interviews and stories told by past and present Museum employees. The artist has created a series of collages shrouded in mystery, breathing life into objects that are not on permanent display. Opens June 1, 6:30 pm.
Design Matters – Illuminating the complex system of decisions, connections, and coincidences behind the Department of Design and Architecture's collection of over 10,000 design objects, from mass produced consumer products to unique objects such as cookie molds from the 1930s designed by Franzisca Baruch. Opens June 1, 6:30 pm.
In Full Color: 60 Years of Design by Dan Reisinger – Considered the most prolific Israeli designer of his generation, this extensive survey of Reisinger's colorful and innovative work includes designs for private and public organizations such as the Tel Aviv Municipality, IDF, HaBimah National Theater, and El Al. In Full Color examines the origins of these icons and the societal shifts they reflect. Opens June 1, 6:30 pm.
Faces of Power: Roman Gold Coins from the Victor Adda Collection – An astounding collection of 75 gold coins never before seen by the public bearing the portraits of Roman Emperors, their families, and courts. The slogans on the coins – mainly relating to victory, security, and peace – display how little propaganda has changed over thousands of years. Opens June 21, 7:00 pm.

One of the many Venice Biennale highlights is The House of Life installation by Israeli artist Hadassa Goldvicht at the Palazzo Querini Stampalia Museum. A collaboration between the Venice Biennale, the Israel Museum, and Meislin Projects, Goldvicht's multi-channel video work explores themes of historical memory; the threshold between life, death, myth, and art; and the rapidly changing nature of Venice, as seen by Aldo Izzo, the guardian and keeper of the Jewish cemeteries in Venice.
Our Italian Friends sponsored a cocktail for Hadassa at the installation venue and a dinner at the Ghimel Garden in the Jewish Ghetto of Venice.

Cats and Dogs – This Youth Wing exhibition for the whole family is devoted to the depiction of pets in artwork from antiquity to present day, offering surprising perspectives on animals and portraying the deep connections between cats, dogs, and humans in a critical and humorous light.
Micha Bar-Am: 1967 – A comprehensive survey of 1967 as documented by photographer Micha Bar-Am. Rare original prints depict seminal national events alongside scenes of everyday Israeli life, illuminating the society, economy, and culture of the time.
Naomi Leshem: Lizette – Once a month at the same time of day, from Sept. 2007–Oct. 2008, Naomi Leshem photographed the view from the balcony of her beautician, Lizette’s salon, in Petah Tikva. The similarity of these photographs demands slow contemplation, reminding us of the inexorable passage of time.
Venice and Bombay Ketubbot – The Venice Ketubbah – in parallel to the joint Vatican Museum and Jewish Museum exhibition in Rome – and the Bombay Ketubbah, a new and important loan to the IMJ collection from the Jeselsohn family in Switzerland, are newly on display in our Jewish Art and Life gallery.

Ashkelon: A Retrospective–30 Years of the Leon Levy Expedition – A bustling port city at the crossroads of major land and sea routes, Ashkelon was a meeting place for peoples and cultures for over 5,000 years. This exhibition displays a wide selection of marble statues, coins, jewelry, figurines, and pottery found over the course of two centuries and displayed together for the first time. Exhibition closes August 5.

Chicago, USA & Paris, France – Paul Gauguin's The Fire Dance (Upa upa) will be on loan from our IMJ collection to the Art Institute of Chicago from June 25-Sept. 10, 2017 and to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris from Oct. 9, 2017- Jan. 21, 2018 as part of the travelling exhibition Gauguin: Artist as Alchemist,
Rome, Italy – The Israel Museum is a proud contributor to the joint exhibition of the Vatican Museum and the Jewish Museum in Rome on the depiction of the Menorah in Jewish, Catholic, and secular art over the centuries. The exhibition will run from May 15-July 23. Major IMJ loans include Poussin’s The Destruction and Sack of the Temple of Jerusalem and important archaeological artifacts. Hamburg, Germany – Coinciding with the European Imprint: Jacob Pins and German Expressionism exhibition at Ticho House and with Pins' 100th birthday, Curator of Prints and Drawings Ronit Sorek will give a talk on Depictions of God in Israeli Modern and Contemporary Art at the Institute for Jewish Philosophy and Religion at the University of Hamburg on July 3.
Los Angeles & Cambridge, UK – Dr. Allison Kupietzky, our Collections Database Manager, will participate in an international workshop on partnering towards a multilingual Thesaurus at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Aug. 10-22. Allison has also been invited to research "Unified Standards for Terminologies and Schema" as a visiting scholar at Cambridge, UK and will participate in the "Machine Reading the Archive" digital methods program.
With the support of the Judaic Department of the Harvard Library, the IMJ Information Center for Israeli Art headed by Allison has completed digitization of the Israel Zafrir photography archive. Some 16,700 images will soon be available on the Center's website and in Harvard's database.
Mexico City, Mexico – Kicking off the 70th year of their discovery, Dead Sea Scrolls Curator and Head of the Shrine of the Book Dr. Adolfo Roitman will become an honorary member of the Academy of Science and Faith at the Pontifical University in Mexico. In honor of this event, Adolfo will give a talk on The Demoniacal Origin of Evil in Ancient Judaism on August 28.

Paris, France – On May 18 , our French Friends hosted a visit to the 21 rue La Boétie exhibition at the Maillol Museum with author Anne Sinclair. Inspired by Sinclair's 2012 book My Grandfather's Gallery, this exhibition of 60 major 20th century works featuring artists such as Picasso, Braque, and Matisse, revives the gallery of her grandfather Paul Rosenberg, one of the most influential art merchants of the first half of the 20th century.
