Dairyland Power Announces Wind Energy Expansion

Dairyland Power Cooperative has begun purchasing 80 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy from the Barton Wind Farm (Kensett, Iowa), effective February 15.  Dairyland has reached a power purchase agreement with Avangrid Renewables (Portland, Ore.) which owns and operates the Barton Wind Farm. It is located in north-central Iowa and has been in service since 2009. The Barton Wind Farm has a capacity of 160 MW of wind energy, of which Dairyland will purchase 80 MW—enough renewable energy to power more than 19,000 homes.

This is Dairyland’s second major wind energy investment in recent months. In 2016, Dairyland announced a power purchase agreement for the 98 MW Quilt Block Wind Farm. Dairyland will purchase the entire output of the Quilt Block Wind Farm from EDP Renewables. Quilt Block is under construction near Platteville in southwest Wisconsin, and is expected to come online in late 2017.

Dairyland Power Solar Sites Begin Coming Online

Six of the 15 solar energy facilities Dairyland Power announced last year have achieved commercial operation.  The projects are located near the Wisconsin communities of Viola, Hillsboro, Arcadia, Mt. Hope, Medford, and Menomonie.

In 2016, Dairyland announced a total of 15 utility-scale solar installations, 14 of which will be located in western Wisconsin and one in northeast Iowa.  They will range between .5 megawatts (MW) and 2.5 MW in scale.  Together, they will yield close to 21 MW of renewable energy.  All are expected to be operational by the end of the summer.  The Wisconsin facilities will more than double the current solar capacity in Wisconsin.

As a cooperative initiative, the facilities are being built in the service areas of Dairyland’s member electric cooperatives.  The advantages of multiple projects is separate locations include: diversified weather, distributed grid infrastructure impacts and locally-based renewable energy.  Fourteen of the solar facilities are being built by SoCore Energy (Chicago) and one by groSolar (White River Junction, Vermont).

0% Interest Economic Development Loan Funds Available for Your Project

One of the best kept secrets in regional economic development is the Rural Economic Development Loan Program (REDL) available through electric cooperatives.  The program provides business and community development loans of up to $1 million at 0% interest.  Funds can be used for business expansion and start-up.  Eligible purposes include real estate, buildings (new and existing), machinery and equipment and/or working capital.  Community facilities and infrastructure are also eligible purposes.  Loan amount is determined by overall project scale, local cooperative policies, job creation/retention and other typical loan approval criteria.

Are you wondering whether this financing might be available for your project?  Contact your local electric cooperative or Craig Harmes, Dairyland Power Cooperative, at (608) 787-1310 or Craig.Harmes@DairylandPower.com.
