LSU SRP Symposium Honors Dr. Barry Dellinger, Founding Director
Dr. Carol Taylor, Chair of the LSU Chemistry Department, welcomed participants to the Education and Research Symposium in honor of Dr. Barry Dellinger at an evening reception on March 8th, 2017.
The Louisiana State University Superfund Research Center (LSU SRP) with sponsorship from the Richard Lipsey & Patrick F. Taylor Foundation held an Education and Research Symposium March 8 th and 9 th, 2017, in honor of Dr. Barry Dellinger, the founding director of the LSU SRP who passed away March 9 th, 2016, after a long illness. The symposium featured a welcoming reception on March 8 th and a research symposium with invited speakers from around the globe and a student poster competition on March 9 th.
Dr. Lynn Jelinski, Sunshine Consultants International (left) and Dr. Bill Suk, director the Superfund Research Program (right) gave presentations entitled “Preserving Dr. Dellinger’s Legacy to the Environment” and “Reflecting on Barry Dellinger’s Contributions to Interdisciplinary Research and Training” as part of the symposium on March 9th, 2017.
Each presenter shared stories about how Dr. Dellinger touched their lives as well as how he contributed to science. The program for the symposium, including the poster abstracts, can be found here.
The winners of the poster competition (from left) gave oral presentations of their research: Ansonia Badgett (2nd Place) - Preparation of Highly Fluorescent Environmentally Persistent Free Radical Surrogates: Surface Modification of Silica-coated Upconversion Nanoparticles with Nickel Oxide; Holden T. Smith (1st Place) – Synthesis, Characterization and Modeling of Gold-Silver-Gold Core-Shell Nanoparticles Exhibiting Enhanced Photothermal Effects; and Misagh Naderi (3rd place) – Targeting Virus DNA-packaging Motor.

LSU SRP Trainees Led Hands-On Science Demonstrations at “STEM Girls Rock”
LSU SRP trainees, from left, Xia Guan, Elisabeth Feld-Cook, and Ajit Ghimire at the LSU Chapter of National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists & Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) Event.
LSU SRP trainees led hands-on activities at the "STEM GIRLS ROCK" event held on January 16, 2017 in the LSU Student Union. The event was hosted by the LSU chapter of the NOBCChE to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Girls from several organizations, including Girl Scouts, were invited to come and learn about renewable energy through chemistry demonstrations. The “Understanding Air” activity the LSU SRP trainees presented uses LEGO bricks as atoms and allows students to build a model of air and then combust different types of fuel models to produce additional carbon dioxide and air pollutants.

LSU SRP at Environmental Health Science Fest!
LSU SRP researchers and trainees at EHS Fest included (from left) Elisabeth Feld-Cook, Dr. Farhana Hasan, and Dr. Maud Walsh.
Members of the Louisiana State University Superfund Research Center (LSU SRP) participated in Environmental Health Sciences Fest (EHS Fest). EHS Fest held December 5-8, 2016, in Durham, North Carolina, was part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). To learn more about the event click here.
LSU SRP trainees (from left) Dr. Jagila Wesley, Ajit Ghimire, and Dr. Ashlyn Harmon pictured with their posters.
LSU SRP Director Dr. Stephania Cormier gave a presentation entitled “Exposure to Radical-Containing Particulates Alters Respiratory Viral Infection Morbidity and Mortality,” focused on how exposure to environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) during early life not only alters lung barrier function but also induces T-regulatory cells that suppress protective immune responses against respiratory viruses. Elisabeth Feld-Cook won third place in the science and engineering section at the Superfund Research Program (SRP) poster session for her poster “The Effect of Metal Speciation in Fly Ash on Environmentally Persistent Free Radical (EPFR) Formation.” The following LSU SRP trainees presented posters:
- Ashlyn Harmon: Reduced Lung Function in Adult Mice after Exposure to Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals is Preceded by Vascular Injury
- Farhana Hasan: Exposure and Toxicity Assessment of EPFRs in Brain
- Jagila Wesley: The Effects of Air Pollution on Severity of Pneumonia in a Metropolitan Area
- Sridhar Jaligama: Radical containing combustion derived particulate matter activate aryl hydrocarbon receptor and enhance Th17 pulmonary inflammation
- Ajit Ghimire: Study of oxidation of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) by Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (EPFRs) in physiological conditions
