Love Your Mother (Mother Earth)
Our mission here at Keep Durham Beautiful is to inspire people to take responsibility for the community environment. In other words, we want you to love your mother - mother earth. To help you show your love, we've compiled three ways you can join us this May as we work together to make our home here in Durham clean, green, and beautiful.

1. Volunteer. If you're a mother - grab your kids, if you're a kid - grab your mother, and join us for an event cleaning up and beautifying Durham. Youth are welcome at our volunteer projects (with parental supervision of course!). Our upcoming events can be found below or on the Keep Durham Beautiful event calendar.
2. Donate. What better way to show your mother how much you love her than by making a financial contribution in her honor? 100% of your tax-deductible donation will be used for Keep Durham Beautiful programs. With your help we can plant more trees, reduce litter, and divert waste from the landfill in Durham. If you are a golfer, consider sponsoring or joining us for the Spring Golf Classic that supports our community grant program. More information below!
3. Get Involved. Do you have secret (or not so secret) skills writing grants, event planning, fundraising, accounting, advising on nonprofit law, marketing, etc.? Make your mother proud and give back! Help further our mission at Keep Durham Beautiful by bringing your unique skills and talents to our team. Our first ever Durham ReUse Rodeo was held on Earth Day (April 22) this year. Over 200 people participated in the Rodeo, donating 11,857 lbs of gently used items to be reused by local nonprofits including TROSA, The Habitat for Humanity ReStore of Durham and Orange Counties, First Pages, Welcome Baby Family Resource Center and The Scrap Exchange.

Thanks to everyone who came out and all of the fabulous volunteers who helped collect and sort items. This effort would not have been possible without our partners - The City of Durham Solid Waste Management Department and Durham County Division of Waste Management who also provided e-waste (electronic) recycling and paper shredding at the event. As well as a special thanks to our event supporters who kept all volunteers well fed - Scratch and Marco's Pizza!

Pollinator Advocate Training
 Last month, representatives from our Durham Bee City USA committee were trained as CPAs - Certified Pollinator Advocates. Durham became a Bee City USA in 2016 and the committee comprised of several nonprofits, businesses and passionate community members are actively working together to promote and support bees and other pollinators throughout Durham. We are gearing up for National Pollinator Week, June 19-25, and encourage you to save the date for our Durham Pollinator Garden Tour on Saturday, June 24th to learn more about pollinators and how to advocate for them here in Durham!

Carolina Recycling Association Awards KDB for Waste Wise Events
 Each year, the Carolina Recycling Association honors top performers that advance waste reduction and recycling in the Carolinas. Keep Durham Beautiful received this prestigious award at their 27th Annual Conference in March for leading the way to reduce waste at Durham Central Park Food Truck Rodeos. Supported by a grant from Waste Management, KDB developed food truck rodeo policies and procedures, signage and materials, and a system to engage volunteers to help divert thousands of pounds of waste, including food waste, from the landfill. Through careful planning and strategic involvement of the major stakeholders, KDB developed and implemented a “Waste-Wise Special Events Planning Manual.”

I Love Durham Limpio
 On April 29th, 56 volunteers worked together to keep Durham Limpio (the Spanish word for clean). A big thanks to the volunteers who removed 2,000 lbs. of litter from our beautiful city. Afterwards, participants joined for an Environmental and Resources Fair featuring planters from recycled bottles of water. A special thanks to all the volunteers and our partners - CANU, Enlaces part of Duke Office of Durham and Regional Affairs, City and County of Durham.

Earth Day
Keep Durham Beautiful celebrated Earth Day with several events including a cleanup at Geer Cemetery with Durham Tech students, gardening with volunteers from Triangle Community Foundation at Sandy Creek Park, tabling at American Tobacco Campus's Earth Day Picnic, hosting the first Durham Reuse Rodeo, and participating in the Durham Earth Day Festival. A huge thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers who contributed to all of these efforts - we couldn't do it with our your support.

Tire Recycling Drive
Saturday, May 6 | 8am-12pm
City of Durham Waste Disposal and Recycling Center (2115 E. Club Blvd.)
We are encouraging residents to properly dispose of old tires and other items that may hold standing water to prevent mosquito breeding and the diseases they may carry. Residents will be able to drop off tires (including tires with rims) for free during the event.
Interested in volunteering? Help collect and pack tires for shipping off to the recycling center. Two shifts (8-10am or 10-12pm) are available. Breakfast or lunch provided for all volunteers. Sign up today!

Spring Golf Classic

Registration is now open for the 2017 Keep Durham Beautiful Spring Golf Classic! The tournament is a 4-Person Captain’s Choice that supports the Keep Durham Beautiful Community Grant Program. Pollinator Garden Tour

We encourage "Pollenteers" of all ages to come out and celebrate National Pollinator Week with us! Take a tour of Durham's finest pollinator gardens, engage in fun pollinator-related activities and learn why birds, bees, butterflies, and bugs alike are so vital to us! The Healthy Bee, Healthy Me Program has 13 participating community gardens; stop into as many you like or all of them.
