Murray State AD Ward has approval from his Board of Regents to continue moving forward with discussions on a potential move to a new conference, clearly believed to be the Missouri Valley. Ward: "No unhappiness at all with the OVC. ... But at the same time, I think you have to look at it as 'do we have an opportunity to grow the program? Can we use it to impact the university?' We evaluate those situations no matter what conference situation presents itself, and we make the best decision possible for the university. [...] I would think because of where we are in preparing for 2017-18 that the next two or three weeks will be really key." Prez Davies notes similar institutions who have upped their overall profile as a result of league moves, points to the academic benefits, as well. (link)
The 12-person search committee to aid Eastern Michigan in the hire of a new AD has been set. Surprising to some is the inclusion of Interim AD Spears. The group will be led by Senior Assoc. AD for Administration Kido & university General Counsel Hage. Spears notes EMU will hire a search firm, a decision that could be made in the coming days, & indicates six to eight weeks as a likely timeline for a new boss to be selected. FB HC Creighton, Women's Track & Field HC Parks, FAR Sidlow, two ACs, a pair of student government leaders & others are also a part of the search committee. (link)
The attorney for former North Carolina academic advisor Crowder requested SEC Commish Sankey be removed from the NCAA infractions panel engaged on the Tar Heels academic saga due to a conflict of interest. Sankey's response: "The panel, including me, will hear and decide this case based on the case record and the membership's bylaws." NCAA: "...committee composition is appropriate. Rules put in place and supported by our membership call for confidentiality in infractions cases and the continued leaks of partial and inaccurate information in this case are disappointing." UNC must respond to the latest NOA by May 16, followed by the NCAA's counter by July 17 & anticipated review date of August 16 & 17. (link)
New Long Beach State AD Fee: "What’s great about Long Beach is it’s not one or two teams that are good. It’s the collective, it’s — look at volleyball, look at women’s basketball, look at baseball. This isn’t a rebuilding job, it’s a refinement job, and I’m excited about that. […] It’s an institutional fit. I think what I bring to Long Beach State is an understanding of what it takes to succeed in the Big West — and then beyond that on the national level. The Big West Commissioner’s Cup is a nice measuring stick, but it’s about winning championships in the Big West and then beyond in the NCAA. You don’t want to limit yourself with the mid-major label. […] It’s exciting. The sky is the limit." (link)
A trio of contract extensions at South Carolina after an historic run this month for the Gamecocks, starting with AD Tanner, who gets three years added on to his deal that could keep him in Columbia through the 2021-22 academic year. MBB HC Martin extended to 2022-23 & WBB HC Staley to 2024-25. Tanner: "Not only did Frank Martin and Dawn Staley lead their teams to record-setting seasons, but through their leadership, teaching and development of student-athletes, they have established highly successful all-around college basketball programs. I believe that through the core principle of growing the student-athlete experience, Frank and Dawn are set for continued success in their programs for years to come." No financial details mentioned, though I'm sure we'll learn about them in due time. (link)
Long review on the first year in the AD chair for Delaware lead Rawak, which includes a number of her thoughts on the build of the Blue Hens department. Points to the passion around the UD brand as a motivator, "We need to look at athletics as an investment not as an experience." Notes the importance of stability in HCs to create "safe spaces" for student-athletes to grow & flourish, yet at the same time knows "the biggest revenue opportunities we have are tied to success on the field." Field Hockey HC van de Kerkhof says Rawak listens to people no matter their title, Rawak indicates a revamp of Delaware Stadium is coming, but that the fundraising process is not walking into someone's house & simply requesting money, "...the way in which we need for today and then long-term is one of the things we’re working on. And I’m confident we’re going to get there, but you don’t get there overnight. It’s a process." More. (link)
Former Tennessee FB HC & rumored AD candidate Fulmer, on his candidacy for the Vols top job that went to former Kansas State boss Currie, "I was just trying to help my university. That's what I'm always going to try to do. [...] Currie has got a hard job and a lot to do. Being a head coach or athletic director, those are hard jobs. He's got a lot to prove. [...] It's my university, too, and I'm going to be around and be involved." Fulmer's comments came during a conversation about his upcoming Boys & Girls Clubs event. (link)
Starting a bit over a year from now, Fort Wayne will no longer be "IPFW" as the Purdue Board of Trustees approved a switch to "PUFW" yesterday. July 1, 2018 is when the change will go into place. Blue & white will remain the school colors, as will the nickname of Mastodons. Purdue University Northeast was the other institution name considered by leadership as Purdue takes over full operation of the campus next year. (link)
NJ.com's Sargeant writes on why former Rutgers AD Hermann was not named in NCAA allegations that came out against the Scarlet Knights on Thursday. The story seems to boil down to former Director of Sports Medicine Monaco & his lack of following the department's oversight & communication policies on drug testing procedures, specifically those that resulted in failed tests. Hermann, during meetings with the NCAA, "In my two years there, two seasons there, there had never -- the physician had never called me and said we have a positive marijuana screen and so you need to confer with coach. That never happened." More, including the full report, which can be found at the bottom. (link)
Arkansas AD Long & his senior team recruit UAB Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Ratcliffe to Fayetteville to serve as a new Senior Assoc. AD with oversight of WBB, student-athlete development, career services, athletic training, strength & conditioning, psychological services & nutrition. Ratcliffe & Long have worked together before, back when Long was the AD at Eastern Kentucky & Ratcliffe was Asst. AD for Administration & Compliance/SWA, then Assoc. AD/SWA. Ratcliffe also has AD experience having led the department at Kentucky State (DII) for nearly four years before her recent eight-year stint in Birmingham. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Some of the Michigan FB team will head to Italy today with others not far behind as they stay back to complete final exams. Two student-athletes will join HC Harbaugh & his wife for a visit to St. Peter's Square in the Vatican to see the Papal address. Harbaugh says he'd like to "shout from the rooftops" to announce who the anonymous donor is who funded the trip. A number of student-athletes are headed on their own adventures in May to the likes of Iceland, Argentina, Costa Rica & Ireland. (link); ESPN purchases the Miami Beach Bowl & will move it to Frisco, Texas. No word yet on a name/brand change. (link)

Former NFL Commish Tagliabue, who recently aided his alma mater Georgetown in the search for a new MBB HC, indicates the process started with three to four dozen candidates, was quickly narrowed to a dozen, then "three or four" that the group really dug in on. Top priority: Someone who understood the values, athletics-academics balance, diversity & commitment to service central to the university's ethos. Points to his time leading the NFL as providing a sound understanding of best practices in hiring processes & the importance of working with a search firm (Korn Ferry) to develop a highly diverse candidate pool. Notes the hiring group did discuss the program's connections to the Thompson family & how a hire may (or may not) impact that dynamic. A bit more. (link)
More HC Notes: The USC WBB search is finally over & it'll be former Trojans WBB HC Trakh who will lead the Trojans once again. Trakh spent the past six seasons rebuilding the New Mexico State program. Aggies AD Moccia with another search on his hands. (link); Rutgers FB HC Ash says self-imposed NCAA penalties won't slow down his program. (link); New NC State MBB HC Keatts has not been implicated in any of Louisville's escort saga. (link); Boise State FB HC Harsin could earn a $50K bonus - up from $15K - if his Broncos win their side of the Mountain West. (link); Tulane Women's Tennis HC Sisk set to exit after nine seasons of leading the Green Wave. (link); Florida State FB HC Fisher continues to advocate for an August signing period. (link)
espnW's Davidson calls Indiana's decision to not admit prospective student-athletes who have a documented history of sexual or domestic violence "encouraging," but not "groundbreaking." Davidson: "It's important to note that the Hoosiers' new policy, while certainly a step in the right direction, is limited by its requirement of a felony conviction or guilty or no-contest plea. The majority of alleged victims don't even report an assault, especially when it involves someone they know (which, according to the Centers for Disease Control, happens about 47 percent of the time), and those who do very rarely see justice in the courts. [...] Regardless of motive, any time an organization draws a line in the sand when it comes to sexual violence is cause for optimism." (link)
One more note on Indiana as it looks like ESPN's Outside the Lines is set to air a segment on the alleged student-athlete mistreatment by former FB HC & current Ohio State OC Wilson tomorrow morning. Women's Rowing and the process of reporting injuries in Bloomington will also be explored. OTL producer Weinbaum: "In the course of the reporting (on the FB story), Paula (Lavigne) uncovered a complaint that had been levied against the medical director for IU athletics, Andy Hipskind. That led to telling another story, in essence. A story about an athlete in another sport. Not a football player, not a male student-athlete, but a female student-athlete and a rower." More, in print here, on OTL tomorrow. (link)
South Dakota AD Herbster, along with MBB HCs from USD & South Dakota State, comment on the current transfer regulations. Herbster: "Let’s say you have a kid who redshirted his first year and then has gone on to have some really good years. Now you have to worry about someone poaching your player. […]  There is a lot of discussion about changing the rules, but I really don’t know what kind of changes you could make that would work. If a student-athlete has completed their commitment to a school, why shouldn’t they be able to go wherever they want?" Herbster also notes the unfairness of HCs having to essentially "re-recruit" some of their student-athletes. (link); ESPN's Goodman always does an excellent job compiling & analyzing the crop of transfers every year & here's his (and Borzello's) most recent effort on the most visible student-athletes on the marketplace. (link)
TV: Fox's official upfront presentation is still a month away, but the network has been hitting up key agencies to hype its heavy lineup of sports this Fall, including the Ohio State-Michigan barnburner, the Big Ten Championship game, plus a premier slate of NFL games in the key late Sunday afternoon window. Fox Sports Prez/COO Shanks: "Consumer behavior has told us that in those 20 weeks of the football season, people spend about $300 billion more than they do January through August." More from Ad Age's Crupi on the importance of sports in light of scripted programming continuing to struggle. This is an excellent read. (link); In response to a ratings dip last season, the NFL has beefed up its primetime match-ups for the 2017 slate. (link); More reports of ESPN layoffs coming next month before Disney's next earnings call. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
The Reno Gazette-Journal's Murray says while he loves to "give UNLV a hard time," the hire of new AD Reed-Francois "is an inspired one" & should compare favorably to Nevada's decision to go with former Utah Deputy AD Knuth back in 2013 that's been a prosperous match. "Ultimately, Athletic Directors are judged by two things: raising money and hiring good coaches. It will to be a while before Reed-Francois gets the chance to hire a revenue-sport coach, but she’ll have to boost UNLV’s philanthropic efforts immediately. […] If Reed-Francois can flood UNLV athletics with cash, the potential is great. But that challenge becomes more difficult with the NFL and NHL moving to town, which will make securing sponsorship money and boosting ticket revenue even harder. But UNLV appears to have found a person who is up for that challenge." (link)
Iowa AD Barta was on the stand yesterday in the Jane Meyer trial, says of Meyer's pushback on the dismissal of her partner & former Field Hockey HC Griesbaum, "Right at that moment, I just needed to get her out of the department. I had to do something. I could have had her terminated." Barta also communicated that some HCs, including FB boss Ferentz, felt like Meyer spoke down to them & did not operate in a cooperative manner. Barta notes the pair had a smooth relationship during their first five years together, but when he informed Meyer that she wouldn't be considered for the Deputy AD opening in 2013, "our working relationship changed forever." Ultimately, Meyer says Barta ruined her career. More. (link)
NCAA updates: The Committee on Academics approved the academic monitoring tool that can be used by executive campus leaders to check up on student-athlete standing. Am I missing the name of this tool somewhere in the release? Can we get a name? Also, Georgetown Prez DeGioia on the new values-based revenue distribution model, "We need to communicate clearly the criteria and distribution methods. Members are paying attention to this." More. (link)
Oakland held its annual Black & Gold Awards at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. Senior Volleyball student-athlete Deatsch first-persons on her career, "When I arrived at Oakland, the O’rena had an ordinary hardwood floor, Track and Field had nowhere to host a home meet, and our end-of-the-year awards were in our arena. Now, we have a blacktop O’rena floor that has garnered national media attention. Track and Field is competing in their third season in their top-notch facility. […] I’m grateful that my bittersweet goodbye was at an award show with such transcendence. As I look to my future only one thing is certain; I will forever be a proud Golden Grizzly." (link); Two clever video spoofs as part of the Awards show centered on social media & the growing list of Horizon crowns won by a number of programs. AD Konya stars in both. (linklink)
Legal: Michigan State FB student-athlete Robertson has been dismissed from the program stemming from a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. (link); Two Elon FB student-athletes have been suspended on charges of felony secret peeping. (link); Former standout Oklahoma FB student-athlete Mixon settles a lawsuit brought by former OU student Molitor. Mixon: "I'm thankful Mia and I were able to talk privately. I was able to apologize to her one-to-one. The way I reacted that night, that's not me. That's not the way I was raised. I think she understands that." (link)
Also Noticed: South Dakota Senior Assoc. AD for Development Schemmel is one of three finalists for the VP of Institutional Advancement opening at Winthrop. (link); Central Arkansas Assoc. AD for Compliance/SWA Shock will be the Chair of the NCAA DI Softball Committee next year. (link); Purdue's project of adding lights to Ross-Ade Stadium continues. Completion set for August 25, two weeks ahead of the Boilermakers season opener under the new system against Ohio. (link); Florida Atlantic books a 2023 FB kick at Clemson for $1.2M. (link); Interesting read on how UCF FB AC Dewitt created his own app to keep track of prospective student-athletes in Broward County. (link); Verizon could buy Time, Inc., important to us given Time's holding of Sports Illustrated. The New York Post's Kelly: "If a Verizon bid comes to pass, there will be more than a little irony. AOL and Time were together when Time Warner merged with AOL in 2000 in what is widely seen as one of the most disastrous mergers of all time." Kelly also notes a potential proxy battle looming for Time. (link)
