New 1.Question Interview Below: Rob Spear // Athletic Director // Idaho (Part I)
New Boston College AD Jarmond officially introduced on The Heights. Jarmond: "Three themes that we will emphasize in this athletic program are passion, alignment, and competitive excellence. First, passion. Passion is contagious. It spreads, and it is the fuel that builds momentum. We need passion and energy among all our staff and coaches in all that we do. Second is alignment. As an athletics department, university, and a BC community at large, we all must understand our shared goals and the roles each of us play that is required to win. It's easy to be aligned when things are going well, not so much when challenging times occur. We will sometimes experience both; yet we must stay aligned. And finally, competitive excellence. Winning requires vision, preparation, focus, and commitment. Our vision is for consistent, competitive excellence in all that we do. We need be to the most prepared team. We need to be focused on the process. The details do matter. And we need a relentless commitment to what it takes to win." More. Link includes full presser video & transcript. (link); BC's student newspaper outlines a to-do list for Jarmond: 1) Be transparent about the future of smaller programs; 2) Improve the stadium plans for Brighton Campus facilities; 3) Finalize plans for a basketball practice facility; and, 4) Reinvigorate the alumni base of donors. Western Kentucky and Russell Athletic agree to part ways, effective June 30, less than one year into a five-year, $3.5M deal originally set to run through June 30, 2021. WKU AD Stewart: "We have enjoyed a terrific partnership with Russell Athletic over the last 10 years. Our athletics programs have experienced significant growth during this time, and we are deeply appreciative to Fruit of the Loom and Russell Athletic for their vital role. We look forward to continuing to work with them in growing our licensed apparel business.” Russell Athletic, which has its company HQ is in Bowling Green, KY, has been an official partner with WKU since 2007. Southern Miss will become the only C-USA team sponsored by Russell, which also recently parted ways with Ohio. The firm's deal with Georgia Tech expires on July 1, 2018. (link); Follow-up reports indicate the Hilltoppers will announce a new five-year agreement with Nike today to begin on July 1. No financial terms disclosed yet. (link)
SEC Snippets: Commish Sankey uses the word "imperfections" in connection to the league's alcohol policy & notes it will get further discussion, a review that could impact LSU's plans to add a beer garden to Tiger Stadium. More Sankey: "At some point, I’m relatively certain there will be further review of the prohibition. That doesn’t predict any outcome. We’ll see what the future holds in that policy, but right now it’s in place." (link); Sankey also says the post-game incident between Florida Softball HC Walton & Auburn student-athlete Fagan a couple of weeks back "shouldn't happen," but "it's a five-second moment." Lauds both departments for how they handled the follow-up. (link); Looks like freshly released Georgia FB commit Demery cannot receive a scholarship from another SEC institution after his domestic violence incident on Saturday night. (link)
Pittsburgh Deputy AD for External Affairs Freire announces his resignation after a year in the position. "I'm thankful for my time here, my family loves the community, and there are many, many good people at Pitt. ... We are really, really proud of the work we were able to do in our year here, and we exceeded what had been asked of us. I wish everybody the best of luck." Some around the country wonder if Freire will relocate to Corvallis to join former Panthers boss Barnes at Oregon State. (link)
USC AD Swann & Trojans FB HC Helton deliver a video message for fans with changes to season ticket policies in the revamped LA Coliseum, which will reduce the facility's capacity from 94K to 77.5K, come the 2019 season. All season ticket accounts will be contacted in the next 15 months for reseating options & a portion will come with a one-time required "gift." Swann: "We will do our utmost to make this process as fair as possible. And we know in many cases you have had season tickets in the same location for years, have become close friends with those sitting near you and do not want anything to change. But, unfortunately, the change will come." (link - video, link - article)
From the latest SBJ: College-focused reporter Smith dives in on eSports & notes the arrival of Utah's varsity program, the first from a 'Power 5' league (once again, the program is not a part of athletics). Includes this quote from Big East Commish Ackerman from last week's CAA World Congress of Sports, "In their mind, particularly the presidents, it’s become a way to engage the science, technology, engineering and math students, for whom it becomes their sport. It’s less of a physical activity than competition, of course. But we’ve seen great interest there." IMG College Prez Pernetti: "The evolution of esports on college campuses is squarely on our radar. There is a very real similarity in the passions that college sports fans and esports enthusiasts have for their schools." (link); Ben Fischer & Terry Lefton penned in wrap-up from Dana Point & the CAA World Congress of Sports when there was key conversation around the engagement of digital content. (link)
The San Jose Mercury News's Wilner examines the tenure of former Pac-12 Networks Prez Murphy-Stephans, who stepped down last week to begin her own media advisory firm -- which has subsequently signed Pac12Nets as a client. While many take issue with Murphy-Stephans's inability to strike a carriage deal with DirecTV, Wilner explains that the barriers to entry were in place before Murphy-Stephans became president -- namely, the $0.80 in-market subscriber fee agreed to by Pac-12 Commish Scott and Comcast/Time Warner in 2011. "That price point was too steep for DirecTV, and market demand, or lack thereof, has thus far proven DTV correct." Wilner also notes that Murphy-Stephans ably championed Olympic sports, which to conference presidents and chancellors was a more important selling point than turning a substantial profit. Still, the Pac12Nets need a culture change, Wilner posits, arguing that the next prez must have two qualities above all others: a deep understanding and passion for the league's campuses, and the ability to champion not only Olympic sports, but also revenue sports, especially as the "next wave of Tier 1 deals and potential realignment builds on the horizon." He adds: "The Pac12Nets are a vital component to that equation. The healthier they are -- and football/basketball will lead the way in that regard, not soccer, swimming or softball -- the more leverage Scott will have." (link)
MBB HCs react to potential plans by the NCAA to move the start of the season up by a couple of days to capture mid-week interest during the busy CFB & NFL season. Kansas boss Self: "I don't think there's any way, regardless of what we do, that we can have the impact during the college football season and the last third of the NFL season. I'm not sure there's any way we can do that." Belmont HC Byrd says some of his peers try to micromanage their schedules & believes playing a tougher slate makes a team better. Butler HC Holtmann: "The days of scheduling games that people would perceive are easier opponents are going away. Everyone has seen the value of a challenging schedule in the committee's eyes and the overall benefit in their team's eyes, too." Notre Dame HC Brey a voice on the other side, "I don't know how much more I want to sign-up for [...] when I've got 20 ACC games." (link)
A state audit report finds that San Diego State improperly classified assistant coaches from faculty to management positions "solely to increase pay," including three who received 33% raises for a total annual cost of $110K. SDSU Interim Chief Communications Officer Jacobs contends that the reclassifications were necessary in order to keep pace with market-based salary requirements and notes that the audit recommends that CSU works with relevant stakeholders to find an appropriate category for assistant coaches. "SDSU will work with the CSU to ensure systemwide policy supports the integrity and continued success of our athletic programs." The California Faculty Association bargaining agreement calls for coaches to be classified as faculty unless they supervise two or more full-time employees. According to the audit, the coaches in question did not meet that criterion. (link)
College Board trustees in Mississippi approved the borrowing of $30M for a $55M renovation and expansion project for Mississippi State's Dudy Noble Field-Polk DeMent Stadium. The updated baseball facility, which will also be made possible by $25M in private donations, will feature a new field, grandstand, concession areas, restrooms, and entry plazas, 50 private boxes, a new video board, new locker rooms and coaching offices, and concrete pads for tailgaters. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
A survey conducted by the Vanderbilt Hustler finds that of the 230 respondents across various areas of the university, 25% report attending zero FB games during the 2016 season while 57% attended two or less. Meanwhile, 78% of student respondents report attending three or fewer MBB games, including 36% who say they attended zero. In baseball, despite winning a national title in 2014, 71% of students report not attending a game while 26.1% report attending one to three. Only 60% of students report watching Vandy's first round MBB NCAA Tournament game on TV while 57% say they did not watch the team's bowl game. Asst. AD for Ticketing Jones: "The current-day Vanderbilt students are notably different from their predecessors, going back even 10 years. ... We are a more global campus as opposed to a lot of other folks. I think that when you get a lot of other cultures into the mix, interests are going to start to vary. We're an international brand at Vanderbilt University. Each student here is a unique individual brand." (link)

Oklahoma Governor Fallin signed a new law that will go into effect on November 1, which "allows a lawsuit against third parties who trigger penalties and economic losses against schools for breaking a governing body's rules." Clear read: Boosters who step out of line & cause NCAA penalties could have to pay damages to the school. OKC attorney & sports agent Masters: "Seeing an actual state law that has some teeth, that could be enforceable against bad actors — that's really the only way to curtail that type of behavior." Oklahoma booster Marsh flips it around, "If we're giving money to the university assuming everyone was following the rules, are we entitled to get our money back?" (link)
Fox Sports's Mandel talks to Oregon FB HC Taggart about his rough start in Eugene, where he will try to rebuild a Ducks program that suffered a precipitous fall following an appearance in the inaugural CFB playoff. Taggart, the first Oregon HC not to rise through the ranks of the program since 1976, maintains that the offseason workout program which resulted in the hospitalization of three FB student-athletes has been mischaracterized by the media and that neither he nor strength coach Oderinde did anything wrong. "We know we didn't do anything to try to hurt our kids. We'd done [the same program] everywhere we'd been and never had a problem. I think our guys just overworked themselves and didn't hydrate. ... They were trying to impress the new coaches." Full profile. (link)
More HC Notes: Northwestern AD Phillips has inked both FB HC Fitzgerald & MBB HC Collins to long-term extensions. Through 2026 for Fitzgerald, 2025 for Collins. (link); UTEP AD Stull turns to Angelo State (DII) WBB HC Baker to take over the Miners program. (link); Providence AD Driscoll squares away a longer deal with Women's Hockey HC Deraney. (link); Niagara AD Gray selects Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) & former UMass-Lowell AC Lammers as his new Men's Hockey HC. (link); UIC MBB HC McClain could stick with the Flames through the 2020-21 season as part of an extended agreement. (link); Belmont AD Corley makes one of his first key HC hires as he recruits DePaul AC Brooks to lead his WBB side in Nashville. (link); Utah Jazz HC Snyder says he could write a book on his path through the coaching ranks, which, of course, include stints at Missouri as HC & Duke as an AC, a career full of challenges which have molded him personally & professionally. (link)
Colorado State Prez Frank is expected to report to the CSU System’s board of governors on May 2 that the new $220M on-campus FB stadium remains on time and on budget and will be ready when the Rams play their first home game of the upcoming season against Oregon State on Aug. 26. Sponsorship commitments have already exceeded the most optimistic projections and the stadium’s premium seating has been sold out since October of last year. AD Parker on the lack of a naming-rights partner for the stadium: "It would be nice to know what we’re going to call the facility, but right now everyone seems more or less fine with the stadium, the new stadium, the on-campus stadium. We debated for a while a little bit internally if we wanted to make it institutional branding as far as ‘Colorado State Stadium’ or something like that, but we decided not to do that. That would have been an investment of dollars that we might be redoing in the near future if we secure a naming-rights partner." (link)
Penn State Deputy AD Esten reviews facility investment plans for the Nittany Lions for its five-year push, "This is the most comprehensive master plan in college athletics. We’re looking at all our facilities as assets; we’ll be in position to adapt (the master plan) over time." A Center for Excellence that will centralize student-athlete services under one roof is at the top of the list. Also, Esten on the major revamp to Beaver Stadium, "The fan experience is really important. How do we captivate and engage our fans? We’re competing with what is happening at home. Our fans travel to events and see some of the amenities at other facilities and that type of expectation is extended to their experience at Penn State." (link)
TV/Streaming: Put this in perspective as Amazon shells out $50M for the NFL's Thursday Night streaming package - the eCom giant expects to generate $6.5B from its 65M to 80M Prime subscribers in 2016. WhatYouPayForSports.com's Warner: "Here’s what sets Amazon apart from ESPN and other cable networks, though: nearly every Amazon Prime member actually wants Prime — even if they only use it for the free two-day shipping." Warner goes on further, believes the NHL & Soccer are two properties that make perfect sense for Amazon in the future. (link); Snapchat rolls-out the ability for brands to purchase geofilters in an automated fashion. (link); Naturally, Google intends to weave in TV commercial inventory as part of its Google Fiber cable TV business into its core digital ad buying platforms. (link); The cash cycle for Netflix is nothing short of amazing as the company is looking to raise another $1B to pour into original content & movies even as it points to a negative $2B cash flow for 2016. What an incredibly massive future bet. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Entering his second year as CFB Playoff Committee chair, Texas Tech AD Hocutt discusses the scrutiny inherent in the position. "Only until you experience it can you truly anticipate being the sole spokesperson for the selection committee. With that comes the analysis of each individual word choice you make. I felt certain I understood the role, but until that first week I didn't fully understand the enormous interest. I'm not expressing my opinion; I'm speaking on behalf of 12 individual committee members. It's unique because sometimes you're giving an opinion you might not agree with 100%." Going into this season, Hocutt says he has a different perspective after having been through it once. "I've got a much greater sense of comfort. Year One, there were a lot of unknowns. It was similar to my first year as an athletic director." More. (link)
Iowa AD Barta yesterday resumed testimony in the gender discrimination case filed against the school by former Senior Assoc. AD Meyer, saying the decision to let her go came down to trust. "It came down to having worked with [Meyer] for seven-plus years and watching a breakdown in trust with some of our coaches, people on campus, as well as me specifically. I had come to the conclusion I couldn't trust her in that role." Questions then focused on the decision to let go former field hockey HC Griesbaum, Meyer's partner. Barta contends that the decision was made after an investigation into player mistreatment, including an allegation from one player who claims Griesbaum told her: "If I were you, I'd kill myself." Barta says the allegation fit with those voiced by other student-athletes, and when Barta confronted Griesbaum with the allegations she refused to change her coaching style. At that point, Barta claims, he decided to let Griesbaum go. It was Meyer's behavior at a staff meeting to discuss the termination of Griesbaum that Barta cites as the biggest factor in his decision to reassign her outside the athletics department. Barta characterized Meyer's reaction as loud and angry, which he says was "troubling" because "she didn't have all the information I had." (link)
South Carolina AD Tanner says reports that the school would back out of a scheduled 2019 trip to East Carolina are "a little bit premature." Tanner hasn't ruled out playing ECU at a neutral site, saying it could be added to the guarantee when ECU comes to Columbia in 2020. "Those things sometimes change with football schedules. We will continue to work on that and play East Carolina. We are likely to go there in 2021." Should USC decide not to play the 2019 game the school would owe ECU a $1M buyout. (link); Other news out of Columbia: the Gamecocks have launched a summertime professional development and internship program named "Beyond Sports," aimed at providing student-athletes work experience in their chosen field. Tanner: "Our ‘Beyond Sports’ professional development and internship program will assist student-athletes for future success outside the fields of competition by giving them real-world experiences in their academic interests." The inaugural group will include 21 this summer. (link)
With UMass Lowell just weeks away from finishing its official transition to DI, AD Skinner says the university is right where it needs to be. "There are different levels within Division I, and we think we’ve found our place in America East. We think we are right where we belong as an institution, as an academic institution and for our athletic programs, and now we’ve just got to persevere." America East Commish Huchthausen has commended the university for meeting the league's expectations with a limited amount of resources. During the transition, the university upgraded its field hockey playing surface, Wicked Blue Field, in time for its first season of DI competition, added MLAX and WLAX, and began streaming home basketball games on ESPN3. Huchthausen: "It wasn’t just talk. [UMass Lowell is] committed to action and being a successful Division I program and not just thankful they got here." (link)
Toledo has been selected as one of 14 universities who will send representatives to Washington, D.C., for intensive three-day training on the prevention of sexual assault, dating violence and stalking on college campuses. The Healthy Masculinity Campus Athletics Project is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice and is designed to arm campus representatives with a curriculum to be implemented through programming and practice on campus. AD O'Brien: "This is a great opportunity to further enhance our training and resources for our student-athletes so they can play a strong, leading role in fostering a healthy, safe campus." (link)
Also Noticed: Notable for those interested in becoming the next AD at Eastern Michigan is news the institution is prepping for a new capital campaign on top of the current $35M push by Athletics. (link); Full notes & recommendations from Minnesota & Prez Kaler on improvements for sexual misconduct policies & practices. Includes a couple of mentions of Athletics. (link); Florida & Georgia FB will continue to play in Jacksonville under a new agreement finally inked that totals $2.75M in incentives. (link); Oregon State launches a giving program focused on achievements by female student-athletes. (link); Former Indianapolis Colts GM Polian says a majority of players who test positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine end up being subpar performers in the league. Seems like a bit of a stretch, but certainly worth framing for your student-athletes. (link); Touching story from the NFL on the play of former Texas FB student-athlete Foreman last season, one that included losing his prematurely born son. (link); Memphis will break ground on its new indoor FB complex this Thursday. (link); The NBA's regular season TV ratings may have been down, but so far the post-season numbers are looking good. (link); Notable rape survivor Tracy met with Stanford FB. (link); At some point this convo is going to come to college athletics (if it hasn't already) as the NFLPA clears the way for players to sell their individual health data. (link); Pretty good read from The Undefeated on how taxes slash signing bonuses for pro athletes. Might be worth sliding in lockers. (link)
