For what it's worth, @HappeningHoops tweeted last night, "MVC appears to be visiting Murray State on Tuesday and Valparaiso on Wednesday." (link); The Tribune Star's Golden: "Regardless of whom the white smoke blows for, 12 teams is the path the MVC ought to follow. Though the nostalgic will harrumph about the loss of round-robins, etc., advantages to adding three teams instead of just one make 12 the way to go. As mentioned, adding good basketball programs increases the odds the league will maintain its place among the best mid-majors in the country. Though performance outside the league is always going to matter most when putting a school in at-large consideration, having good teams to play within the league is also important to maintaining what's been gained outside league play. And whether it's an 18-game schedule, as the MVC presently has, or a 20-game slate as has allegedly been considered, the MVC will have more options to not only create better league matchups, but also, to please the bean counters with desirable geographic matchups." ESPN columnist Lavigne examines Indiana's past medical treatment of student-athletes through the lens of new NCAA legislation aimed at prioritizing athlete care. Lavigne details the experience of rowing student-athlete Beck, whose personal physician, after over a year of treatment from IU doctors, found that Beck's "upper body is no longer firmly connected to her lower body" and, according to Beck, was "just really confused that doctors at this level missed such significant signs and obvious things that they should have caught." Lavigne also notes the treatment of FB student-athletes, one of whom says medical staffers were walking on eggshells and "acting out of fear" around former HC Wilson, who was later let go. A common thread between the rowing and FB programs, according to Lavigne, was an "isolation" of athletes, who say they were "shamed" and perceived as weak by coaches. NCAA Chief Medical Officer Hainline says new legislation should put an end to such treatment: "When you're dealing with a human being who has been injured and then that human being is ostracized or made to feel bad...my belief is exceptionally strong on that. That is unacceptable." Full piece. (link)
Georgia has cut ties with a high school FB student-athlete who signed in February after the student was arrested over the weekend following an altercation with his girlfriend. The incident allegedly occurred following his attendance at UGA's spring game on Saturday, HC Smart released a statement yesterday indicating that the student, charged with misdemeanor battery and criminal trespass, had been released from his LOI. RunRebs blogger Bischoff believes it's unfair to judge the tenure of new UNLV AD Reed-Francois by if she gets the Rebels into the Pac-12 or another 'Power 5' league even though Prez Jessup commented on the institution's long-term aim during his new AD's presser. Bischoff notes that one of the larger issues at hand is the university gaining R1 Carnegie status, a classification all current Pac-12 schools have, something Reed-Francois will have little to do with. Another key item Reed-Francois can't control is the attractiveness of the Las Vegas media market, vital for TV purposes in conference realignment decisions. (link)
The BC Heights Editorial Board: "(New Boston College AD) Jarmond is the perfect fit for a school that needed one at the most critical time. Nothing is a sure bet in the world of athletics hirings, but Jarmond is as close as you can get." Points to "youth and exuberance," the importance of Jarmond becoming the highest-ranking administrator of color & his media-friendly approach. Challenges: Having never personally hired or fired a HC & getting fully up to speed with a key sport in the Eagles portfolio, Hockey. (link)
Last night's ADU entry, courtesy of Arkansas Assoc. Sports Management Professor Dittmore: "Is The Traditional Role Of College Sports Media Changing?" Dittmore reviews a panel at the College Sport Research Institute Conference (CSRI) earlier this month in Columbia, South Carolina that included the likes of  WaPo/ESPN/NPR's Blackistone, the Raleigh News & Observer's DeCock, USA Today's Axon & Vice Sports' Hruby. Panelists offered perspective on the juxtaposition of the NCAA in simultaneously wanting it's key product, March Madness, to be widely covered & promoted, while also providing little clarity on issues like investigations. There's also the trend of athletic departments themselves handling the reporting of their own breaking news. Dittmore: "The question thus becomes -  are sports journalists seeing themselves differently, moving away from decades of symbiosis with the teams they cover, and toward a more adversarial relationship?" More. (link)

ESPN's Murphy dives in on Michigan FB's current trip to Italy. Two practices will take place at Giulio Onesti Olympic Center outside of Rome & interestingly, the Wolverines did not ship over large equipment items commonly placed at gridiron training sessions. UM student-athletes will also connect with AS Roma players for "some competition between the two groups." Plenty of cultural immersion is also on the docket. Director of Career Advancement & Education for Student-Athletes Acho: "He’s the first coach to really get it and really change the culture." (link); Adidas CEO Rorsted says 90% or more of manufacturing for Three Stripes will stay in Asia, despite the push of some global political leaders to move production back to their continents. Rorsted also does not "see full automation in the next 5 to 10 years." (link)

The Long Beach Press-Telegram's Fiddler & Guardabascio identify four key inflection points for new Long Beach State AD Fee: 1) Fundraising & alumni (Reducing the 26 cents per earned dollar in athletics...overall campus development is 12 cents per dollar); 2) Basketball (MBB HC Monson's deal "coming up on its end" & Fee needs to hire a new WBB boss); 3) Finding the right student-athlete balance; and, 4) "Naming Rights" (in the sense of branding around Long Beach State vs. The Beach vs. 49ers vs. Cal State Long Beach, etc.) (link)
Jacksonville AD Ricker-Gilbert honored by Jacksonville Business Journal as a '40 under 40' selection, says of the Dolphins' positioning, "At JU we can have daily contact with the student athletes. With a bigger school, you might not be able to do that." More: "I hope that through my work ethic, the mission and the values that we have set for our students, we can inspire them. We have a relationship to make our student athletes be allowed to grow. Preparing them for life has inspired them to want to go on and inspire others." (link)
Fox Sports's Feldman uses the new lockers at Texas as symbolism for HC Herman's new era and his attention to detail in all aspects of the program. Herman is candid about what some have perceived as the program going "soft" and enabling players with a sense of entitlement: "A -- I don't care. B -- I think they'd rather us be soft with really good players than soft with really bad players, right? We're not gonna be soft. ... The finest facilities in the country attract really good players. Soft isn't anything about what they get and the gear they get. ... No, you're soft because your culture is soft." He adds: "My constituency is not the public. My constituency is our players and the recruits, our former players, and the coaches in the great state of Texas." (link)
More HC Notes: Looks like Michigan AD Manuel will hire former Wolverines AC & current Michigan Tech Men's Hockey HC Pearson to the same gig in Ann Arbor. (link); The Hartford Courant's Jacobs wonders if UConn MBB HC Ollie can get better at leading his program. Ollie: "You can put this in your story. I'm going to fight. I'm going to reinforce our culture. I'm going to value our culture. I'm going to fight for it. I've got to get players that are going to fight for our culture every day." (link); Wyoming AD Burman promotes AC Denniston to take over UW's Swimming & Diving program. (link)
In a 47-page legal filing, Baylor characterizes the claims of 10 alleged sexual assault victims suing the university as vague and uninformed. From the filing: "Plaintiffs' averment that defendant is 'responsible for providing the security of its students and guests' is vague and undated and calls for a legal conclusion." The university, which submitted the filing late Friday afternoon, also disputes that each allegation in the original complaint was reported to an appropriate official "with authority to take corrective action. Defendant further denies that it was deliberately indifferent in violation of Title IX." At the same time, the university asserts that the legal filing "in no way changes Baylor's position that any assault involving members of our campus community is reprehensible and inexcusable. The university remains committed to eliminating all forms of sexual and gender-based harassment and discrimination within our campus community." (link)
Northeastern doctoral candidate Farnell in the Harvard Business Review calls for leaders to mentor people different from themselves. "Otherwise, we do what's comfortable and we risk saying with our actions that we care about cultivating the talent of a homogeneous few." Farnell advises that mentoring others with different backgrounds and perspectives means taking an active approach because it can be difficult for those from different cultures to voice their concerns. "As an Army officer who has trained many diverse groups of recruits...I've always cared deeply about helping all kinds of people reach their potential. But it took me years to understand this basic dynamic: 'Those who look less like me might find it hard to share their concerns with me or ask me for help. They might feel uncomfortable raising their hand if they aren't sure I will identify with them. And it's on me, as the leader, to help close that gap.'" Finally, Farnell explains the benefits such mentoring has for the leader, noting that he himself has become better at spotting potential "outside the usual mold -- and better at understanding the obstacles people face when they aren't part of the dominant group. And that makes it a little easier for the next person to get leaders' attention and support." (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Six of the highest paid Kansas State employees in 2016 were FB coaches, according to The Mercury, which reports that HC Snyder earned over $3M. Snyder's salary actually decreased by about $70K from 2015, mostly due to contractual bonuses from the 2014 season, including a third place finish in the Big 12 ($50K), finishing in the top 20 nationally ($50K) and securing a non-BCS bowl bid ($50K). Assistants Hayes, Dimel, Miller, Dickey and Snyder were fifth through ninth on the list, with salaries ranging from $488,071 (Hayes) to $416,644 (Snyder). MBB HC Weber was second on the list, bringing in just over $2M, a $24K increase over 2015. Former AD Currie was next, with total compensation of $801,507, while WBB HC Mittie earned $488,891. Former Prez Schulz was seventh on the list (salary not given). (link)
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's Davenport chronicles in extensive detail a recent day in the life of Arkansas FB HC Bielema, which included plenty of interaction with his staff, student-athletes and their parents, recruiting, spring practice and even lunch with the winner of a charity bid. From 6:45 A.M. to 9:15 P.M., Bielema's "nonstop emphasis" on recruiting, academics, and player development is on full display. With Northwestern making the NCAA tourney field this year for the first time since the event began in 1939, the so-called "Forgotten Five" is now down to four. Army, The Citadel, St. Francis-Brooklyn and William & Mary are now the four programs that have never made it to the Big Dance. A fact that William & Mary Senior Assoc. AD Dwyer is well aware of: "Now we’re down to four, and we want to get out of that club as soon as possible. It’s something that we talk about around here frequently. Our alumni are very in tune with that fact. We’d love nothing better than to finally make it one of these years." (link)
Cynopsis Sports chats with FloSports co-founder & CEO Floreani after the OTT platform inked an extended deal with the Big 12 last week to show live & on-demand coverage of the 2017 Tennis & Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Q1 brought 58K new subs for FloSports & 300 event rights deals. Check this out from Floreani: "So our plan was three-fold: 1) be 100% digital; 2) provide better value for rights holders than anybody; and 3) be better than anyone in the world as it relates to live events as it relates to data. If we do those three things, we believe 100% that we will be bigger than ESPN one day." More, including Floreani's belief that a great product has to be paired with great content to win big. (link)

Useful way to start your week: Florida Athletic Director Scott Stricklin's 1.Q on what it's like to move from the #2 spot in an athletic department to the AD chair.
