New 1.Question Interview Below: Todd Stewart // Athletic Director // Western Kentucky (Part I)
Ohio State Deputy AD/Chief of Staff Jarmond could be named as the new AD at Boston College by the end of the week, according to Sports Illustrated's Thamel. "The 37-year-old is considered one of the country’s sharpest young administrators. He brings an extensive background in both football and fundraising from stints at Ohio State and Michigan State. […] He’s been regarded highly enough that he got long looks at recent openings at both Syracuse and Mississippi State. He was recently named one of the Forty Under 40 by the Sports Business Journal. Jarmond would become the youngest athletic director at the Power 5 level." (link)
Indiana will not add prospective student-athletes to its rosters who have previous transgressions related to sexual or domestic violence. Sexual violence defined as, "dating violence, domestic violence, rape, sexual assault or sexual violence as defined by the Indiana University policy on sexual misconduct." Hoosiers AD Glass: "It’s something the SEC, with their transfer ban, I think raised the issue generally. We’ve been working on that since that time, in trying to put something together that makes sense for Indiana University." Several campus entities were involved in establishing the guideline & there is an appeals process handled by the university. More. (link)
A couple of high-level conferences are going down at the moment in sunny Southern California: 1) The Collegiate Sports Summit in Santa Monica; and, 2) The CAA World Congress of Sports in Dana Point. Exciting news coming on the former in the very near future, while the latter brought a number of interesting tweets yesterday:
+ ESPN EVP Magnus expects NFL TV ratings to rebound next season (link); Also notes challenges in getting fans to fully engage in the college hoops regular season (link)
Big East Commish Ackerman says "#esports has become a way for colleges to tie #stem students to the university" (link); Ackerman also pointed to March Madness as the "glue" that holds together all of DI (link)
+ Adidas North America Prez King indicates Three Stripes ended its relationship with the NBA because it became too expensive (link)
+ Turner boss Levy "sees more direct to consumer TV rights, what he calls pay to play," believes ratings are about storylines & competitive games, not consumption trends (link, link)
+ Nike executive & former MBB HC Raveling believes the NCAA will sponsor 3-on-3 hoops within 15 years (link); Says of LaVar Ball, "Wors(t) thing to happen to college basketball in last 100 years." (link)
+ Lots more on advertising, marketing, eSports, the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium & its food/pricing menu, sports gambling, etc. Full thread, here. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd goes in on new NCAA rules that would regulate the size of FB staffs, "Hey, Nick Saban, the NCAA is coming to limit the size of your football staff." Dodd says one issue is no one knows what the right number of analysts & support staffers really is. An unnamed coach in the Big Ten, "It's an unfair advantage. It's completely ridiculous." Oklahoma State HC Gundy: "I don't care what the number is, the analyst position is a good thing for coaches who got left out of the coaching search. We bring them in here and pay the $50,000. But there needs to be a limit. Why should one school have 15 and I have two?" Dodd also weaves in feedback from Alabama HC Saban & thoughts from Big 12 Commish & FB Oversight Committee chair Bowlsby, who notes potential legal ramifications. Dodd, in closing: "Yes, they're coming for you Nick. It also doesn't mean they'll be successful." (link)
This will make you wonder what Baylor is paying new FB HC Rhule & AD Rhoades. Tax returns from 2015 show former Bears FB HC Briles earned $6.234M in Waco, $5.787M of which was base pay. The overall total would have ranked Briles as the fourth-highest paid HC in the nation for '15. Former AD McCaw received $954K ($650K = base), up from $814K in 2014. MBB HC Drew at $2.865M, WBB HC Mulkey got $2.2M, Baseball HC Rodriguez stacked $830K in total. (link)
Utah AD Hill, even at the age of 67 & as the longest-tenured AD in the country, doesn't sound like he's near retirement. Says he thinks about it, but enjoys going to work everyday. Focused on an expansion of Rice-Eccles Stadium that could add to the facility's capacity, but notes that no official study has been conducted yet. "Demand is sure there," no state dollars would be used & Hill points to a number of constituents that need to be satisfied as part of the work (prospective student-athletes, fans, maintaining an excellent game atmosphere, etc.). A new center-hung scoreboard in the Huntsman Center is also on the docket, could run $4M with Learfield paying half. Still wants an on-campus Baseball venue. Believes transfers are all about the "instant gratification" mindset of student-athletes these days. More. (link)
The Men's Basketball Oversight Committee met in Indianapolis last week & one edit to the game may be moving the start of the season up by a couple of days to take advantage of mid-week excitement & create a window of three or four days at some point in the season as a mandatory off period for student-athletes. Shifting forward by a couple of days would also ensure Veterans Day could be integrated into the hoops slate. The group also believes flow & pace of the game has improved over the last two years, will gather data in 17-18 to gauge potential future changes like a wider lane & playing four quarters. (link)
Kansas regents have approved a proposal which will allow KU to ban firearms from its MBB and FB games. Effective July 1, state law will require universities to allow concealed firearms to be carried on campus by permit holders; however, with the measure approved by regents, athletics events with over 5,000 spectators will be allowed to take security precautions, including the installation of metal detectors, to ensure no one brings a concealed gun into the facility. The measure, which grants the same approval to Wichita State and Kansas State, requires tickets to state that weapons will not be permitted. KU Chancellor Gray-Little: "It's a good idea, I think, for that kind of large-scale public event. It provides a measure of safety to the participants." (link)
Butler will unveil the newly named Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl, home of FB and M/WSOC, at its first home FB game in September. The rechristening is in recognition of a $9.4M gift from the Sellicks' estate, which will be shared among the athletics program, the Lacy School of Business and general university support. The school will also rename the Champions Room inside the stadium the Bud and Jackie Sellick Room. (link)
Indiana has a received an unspecified major gift from the Irsay family to support the construction of the IU Athletics Excellence Academy. IU alumna Kalen (Irsay) Jackson says AD Glass approached her with the idea of getting someone "younger and millennial to give us a different perspective," and that conversation led to the creation of the academy, part of which will be named the Irsay Family Wellness Clinic. The clinic will include exam rooms, x-ray machines, offices and procedure rooms to support the physical and mental health of IU student-athletes. Jackson, who is the daughter of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, also serves as president of the Colts Women's Organization, is on the board of the United Way of Central Indiana, and is the youngest member of the NFL Employee Benefits Committee. Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the world's busiest, according to 2016 traffic data compiled by Airports Council International (ACI), which ranks the airport first globally in number of flights and number of passengers. The airport saw 104M passengers pass through its gates in 2016, a 2.6% increase over the previous year and nearly 10M more than Beijing Capital, the world's second most-traveled airport. Los Angeles's LAX (4), Chicago's O'Hare (6), Dallas-Fort Worth's DFW (11) and New York's JFK (16) are also among the world's most traveled airports. (link)

Charlotte is back in the saddle for the ACC FB Championship Game for 2017 & beyond as a number of other league title events will return to North Carolina with the updated HB2 deal. "The ACC also said contracts with venues that had multi-year agreements with the conference were extended a year to compensate for games that were relocated from North Carolina in the 2016-17 season. That means that the ACC’s contract at Bank of America Stadium runs through 2020." Commish Swofford with words of "appreciate," "cooperation," "thrilled," "first-class." (link)
Texas FB has added snazzy new lockers (more below) & next up is a new, massive 56' x 135' LED video board at the south end of Royal-Memorial Stadium. UT is already soliciting bids for the project that could run up to ~$6M. The university is pushing for work to be complete, though no vendor has been selected yet, by July 19 to coincide with its "Under the Lights" recruiting event. Looks like extended ribbon boards are also a part of the scope, as are new boards at UT's Tennis venue. (link)
Interim Louisville Prez Postel tells faculty and staff members that the school's self-imposed penalties concerning the MBB investigation "were appropriate" and that UL looks forward to presenting its case to NCAA Committee on Infractions. "The university remains deeply troubled by what took place [in the MBB dorm]. It should never have happened. On behalf of the university, I will handle this matter openly and directly. ... We have acknowledged to the NCAA that improper activities took place. When the university learned of these incidents, we acted and took decisive punitive action. The penalties we imposed were among the most severe ever self-imposed by an NCAA member." The infractions committee will listen to arguments from the NCAA and UL during the upcoming hearing, the date of which Postel says he cannot divulge per NCAA rules, before making a decision and discussing any further penalties. (link)
New Pitt AD Lyke on MBB HC Stallings, "...after my conversations with him, I know he wants to be here. I know he's committed to being here, and I'm very confident in his ability to start to build it. He's got a ways to go, but we need to support him, we all need to get to know him a little bit better and that's what I'm doing right now, spending time getting to know him, figuring out what are the greatest ways that we can support him." Stallings is currently challenged with rebuilding his roster after a number of departures from last year's squad. (link)
More HC Notes: Penn State Women's Hockey HC Brandwene, who has been on family medical leave since January 20, announced his retirement yesterday, less than 13 months after accusations of mistreatment within his program. Cites his wife's high-travel job demands and his goal of now supporting her career. (link); Former UCF MBB HC Jones lands at Wichita State as the Shockers new top AC at $200K per year. (link); New Arizona MBB AC & former Washington HC Romar: "But what I do understand — I really believe this; I can’t really be upset at the athletic director — is that we didn’t do well at the end. I tried. My staff tried. We didn’t do well. I really believed God was in control of the situation and that I’m moving to a different place. I wasn’t happy, but at the same time, if I really believe God, how can I be upset with a human?" (link); New VCU MBB HC Rhoades pens a thank you letter to the Rice community, where he "had a blast" serving as the Owls' HC the past three years. (link); Not an HC, just another AC making $1M+ as Alabama OC Daboll will receive $1.2M. (link); Cal State Fullerton AD Donovan hires Central Washington (DII) WBB HC Harada as the next Titans leader (link); After getting jacked on April Fools, I shouldn't be including stuff from Swim Swam anymore, but it looks like Princeton AD Marcoux Samaan has recruited Tennessee AC Lundgaard as the new Men's & Women's Swim & Dive HC for the Tigers. (link); Yale Men's S&D HC Wise steps down. (link); Appalachian State Men's Golf HC Dicus will retire at the end of the year after 26 with ASU. (link)
Examining the trends of FB coaching salaries, San Jose Mercury News columnist Wilner contends that despite Washington HC Petersen's recent raise to $4.875M annually, it is Oregon DC Leavitt whose compensation represents the league's most glaring outlier. In a conference in which the third highest-paid HC (Utah's Whittingham) makes less than the top 10 coaches in the SEC, Leavitt's deal pays $1.5M per year. Wilner: "That, folks, is the Pac-12's market buster, its landscape changer -- the deal that must make other coordinators celebrate and athletic directors wince. ... It might be one hiring cycle, it might be two. But sooner than later, the top Pac-12 coordinators will start commanding low/mid seven figures." For comparison, assistants at Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Cal Berkeley, Oregon State and Washington State are paid from compensations pools under $3M. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Kansas State FB HC Snyder is blunt in his denial that he's ever had any interest in the AD position, despite the role of an HC being analogous to that of an executive in many ways. "We find fewer and fewer and fewer athletic directors who have actually gone through the process of athletics and who played. Whether they played well or not is not important, but that they were actually in the locker room and on the field and in the meeting rooms and all those things that go along with it, to really get a great understanding of what that part of it is all about. So they’re hiring people that have more of a business background and fund-raising becomes a major part of it." Those involved in the hiring of new AD Taylor, who reportedly has a background in finance, hope he will prove adept at scaling both terrains, citing his experience as a FB manager at Arizona State. (link)
Former Iowa Senior Assoc. AD Meyer was on the stand yesterday in her case against the university. Started by laying out her career to the jury of 10 & the "stack" of accolades she had piled up in her career. Noted excellent reviews of her job performance by former Hawkeyes AD Bowlsby & early in the tenure of current UI boss Barta. Asked for, but did not receive, raises in 2008 & 2012 to get level with other Senior Assoc. ADs around the Big Ten. Recounted wanting to be considered for the Deputy AD job that ended up going to North Dakota State AD Taylor & was told by Barta he needed "someone who could represent him better." Also, said a trend within the department was the removal of female HCs who were gay. More. (link)
Virginia Tech's Hokie Club generated $33M in its most recent fundraising cycle, the first time it's ever topped the $30M mark. Total membership is up to 13K as AD Babcock has stated he wants to grow the group to 25K eventually. If it keeps pace at an average of 675 new members per month, that 25K goal would be reached in late 2018. Of the $33M, "approximately $16.2 million was designated to the Hokie Scholarship Fund to be utilized specifically for scholarships for deserving student-athletes, a dramatic 65 percent increase in giving from last’s year’s $9.8 million total." (link, link)
Finally some details on Arkansas State's new deal with Adidas: Seven years at $11M overall (math: $1.571M/yr), which officially started on September 1 of last year & is scheduled to run through the end of the 2022-23 competition seasons. Red Wolves AD Mohajir: "I sell Arkansas State. I sell our achievements. I sell our retail value, an(d) the emerging brand that we are." (link)
Legal: Potter County (PA) Senior Judge Leete disagrees that special circumstances should allow the NCAA to depose former Penn State AD Curley nearly a year after the discovery cut-off date has expired. The NCAA has pushed the matter after Curley recently entered his guilty plea after a long stretch where it was assumed he would invoke his fifth amendment rights. (link); From Law360: "Northwestern University earlier this week told an Illinois federal court that a former basketball player cannot prove it breached a contract to provide him with special benefits beyond a scholarship in a lawsuit against the university and the NCAA over his alleged ouster from the team." (link); The AP's Vertuno: "Day after #Baylor gets new prez, 1 of Jane Doe lawsuits gets a May 14, 2018 trial date." (link)
Also Noticed: Full video tour of the new $10,500 per unit locker for Texas FB. (link); The University of Missouri & its parent system have spent $1.9M on search firm guidance since July of 2015, led by Isaacson Miller's $557K. Parker earned $80K for its assistance with the hire of new MBB HC Martin. (link); Need to find more on this, but it looks like Penn State FB HC Franklin has told the media they can participate in the spring game in order to report on an inside look at what it's like. (link); Middle Tennessee FB will get $1.7M for its kick at Georgia in 2018. (link); Yesterday at Facebook's F8: "Silent speech interfaces" that could allow communication without speaking by using non-invasive sensors to pull words out of your brain's speech center & display them on skin. Seriously. (link); Nielsen's new out-of-home viewership measurement abilities continue to raise ratings. Good news. (link); Oklahoma State FB's bowl rings from last year count the controversial loss to Central Michigan as a win. (link); Vanderbilt FB with a hilarious sorority recruitment video spoof. (link)
Western Kentucky Athletic Director Todd Stewart debuts on 1.Q with perspective on how to handle feedback with head coaches involved in a search, but who end up not being the selected new HC. Stewart talks about who on the search committee should follow back up with the candidates, at what specific point in in the process such conversations should take place, the common disposition of finalists who don't get the job & an interesting response he once received.
