New 1.Question Interview Below: Todd Stewart // Athletic Director // Western Kentucky (Part II)
Speaking at Tulsa on Wednesday, NCAA Prez Emmert emphasizes the need for children to play various sports, discusses the expectations of student-athletes and opines on other issues facing college sports. "We have 8-year-old kids starting to throw a baseball as a pitcher. By the time they show up in college they are on their first or second Tommy John surgery. ... We need them to settle down a little bit." Placing such a heavy emphasis on sports, particularly on one sport, Emmert offers, can lead to unrealistic expectations about the possibility of playing professionally. He says that despite only 1.5% of MBB student-athletes moving on to play professionally each year, 50% of DI and 75% of DII believe they will move on to the next level. "This is just stunning. We had kids dropping out of college at the end of their junior year to try for the NFL draft who weren't even starting on their college team. ... If they are that far out of whack with their understanding of the marketplace, then they are not paying attention to what's going to change their life." Emmert also notes that March Madness accounts for 85% of all NCAA money, says the NBA one-and-done rule "makes a mockery of the collegiate athlete model," and remarks that by paying college athletes, the NCAA would be reduced to a business that would eliminate every sport except MBB and FB. As you surely know by now, Boston College Prez Leahy turns to Ohio State Deputy AD/Chief of Staff Jarmond to serve as the next AD for the Eagles. Leahy: "He is a person with high energy, infectious enthusiasm, and an impressive ability to engage with people and issues." Jarmond: "I have always believed that the commitment to high academic standards and competing at the highest level athletically are not mutually exclusive. The opportunity to serve at a top-notch academic institution in the ACC is a dream come true for me. I am passionate about helping young people develop and integrate the intellectual, athletic, social and spiritual components of their lives. My leadership style is consistent with BC's values: operating with integrity, passion, and a relentless focus on getting better every day." (link); Being named a 'Power 5' AD & getting honored as a SBJ 'Forty Under 40' standout all in one day. Not too shabby for new BC boss Jarmond. (link); Here are the rest of the pictures & tweets from last night's 'Forty Under 40,' which included a number of leaders in college athletics. (link)
Late into the evening (east coast time) Long Beach State announced the selection of UC Santa Barbara AD Deputy AD/Chief Development Officer Fee as the new AD for the 49ers. Fee says he's ready to enhance an already strong foundation, excited to engage with the community & set a "bold vision" forward. LBSU Prez Close Conoley: "His vision for the future of our athletics program provides me confidence that he will build on the many successes we have had over the years and he will take our student-athletes to the next level, athletically and academically." (link)
After nearly 11 hours of hearings before the NCAA Committee on Infractions, Louisville will now wait six to eight weeks for the committee to issue its ruling on allegations stemming from recruiting visits in the MBB dorm. Representatives from Louisville included AD Jurich, MBB HC Pitino, Interim Prez Postel, former AC Williams, NCAA compliance expert Smrt, and attorneys for all involved. While parties are not allowed to discuss specifics of the hearing, Jurich said afterward: "We exchanged all of our information and the enforcement staff gave all of their information. The committee on infractions listened, they asked questions when they felt were needed. I think it was very, very thorough, and I think it goes without saying that I can’t wait to get this behind us." Smrt has said previously that the accusations against the school should not constitute the loss of the 2013 National Championship, nor of the 2012 Final Four. (link)
Now we have the Governor of Kentucky chiming in on the comments made by Louisville Trustee & Papa John's boss Schnatter. Gov. Bevin, who appointed Schnatter to the UofL board, "Tom (Jurich) is a good friend of mind, a man I have such unbelievable respect for. People always want to find somebody to throw under the bus or somebody to point to. But I will tell you this: that man is a good man; he is an incredible athletic director; his integrity is impeccable. And he truly, genuinely, has always put the interest of the student-athlete first, above all else." On the "premier" athletic department: "I mean they're just unbelievable, what has been put in place. You would have to look a long time to find somebody as well-known and well-respected in the NCAA at any level who's in the position of being an athletic director as you find in terms of the respect that people have for Tom." More. (link)
Rutgers issues a 102-page response to NCAA allegations of improper recruiting, inaccurate drug test results, and an attempt by former FB HC Flood to have a student's grade change by getting him additional work. In the report, Rutgers states it is "clear that violations occurred in this case. The University recognizes the significance of this matter and acknowledges that it bears ultimate responsibility." The school has also suggested the following penalties: a $5K fine to the NCAA, a 10-day reduction in permissible off-campus recruiting days, a limitation of 36 official FB visits from HS and transfer prospects in 2017-18, and probation initiating contact with recruits via phone, social media or written correspondence for a one-week period during 2017-18. Rutgers also notes that it has let go of several of the parties involved in the allegations, including HC Flood, and that the "institution will continue to strive for excellence with integrity." (link)
Oregon State AD Barnes discusses the significance of Portland being awarded the first and second rounds of the NCAA MBB Tournament in 2022, and for the OSU campus to host WBB regionals in 2019 and 2020. Increasing the university's presence in Portland, Barnes says, is particularly important and has been in the works for several years, prior to his arrival. In addition to the tournament games, OSU football will hold a fan fest in the area this summer to make up for not having any spring FB appearances there this year. "Really it's an opportunity to open some new doors, it's an opportunity to re-engage and engage your alumni base around having your name on [the NCAA tournament] and being a part of that." He adds that hosting in Portland is a "thank you" to the area. Increased support for OSU WBB also helped secure a tourney site, Barnes believes, as does the experience of Deputy AD for External Ops Lassiter, who oversaw the MBB tourney in Salt Lake while working at Utah. "Having that ability to draw is really important on both men’s and women’s side and then having folks who’ve done it before. Zack Lassiter was a tournament director in Salt Lake. So on the men’s side to have somebody who’s done it before and did it successfully certainly plays a part in that as well." (link)
New Southern Miss AD Gilbert straight to the point, "Obviously, we've got to generate more revenue." More: "I’m still getting into the financials. I’ve been working with our (chief financial officer), getting an outline for where we are and how we’re going to move forward. But I think the first thing we have to do is stabilize our operating budget. We want to make sure we’re good stewards of our resources. Then, you go out and solicit gifts to the department for capital projects, which programs need to move forward." Gilbert believes strategic FB game contracts could be a solution, but also says he needs all those associated with the Golden Eagles to, literally "buy in." (link)
Pac-12 Networks President Murphy-Stephans will step down this summer to launch a media advisory company, which will serve as a consultant to Pac-12 Networks moving forward. Her tenure has been highlighted by profitability, "cutting-edge" and "innovative" production capabilities and digital & multi-media platforms, and 850 live productions per year. League Commish Scott: "As Pac-12 Networks’ first general manager, Lydia’s energy and leadership were critical in turning our ambitious vision into a reality. ... Under Lydia’s leadership, Pac-12 Networks grew dramatically both in programming and distribution reach, serving millions of our fans, helping to support our member universities, and providing unprecedented exposure to our women and Olympic student-athletes." SIDEARM Sports & Libris by PhotoShelter announce a deal that they're calling the first-of-its-kind in college athletics. "No other digital asset management platform and content management system have come together to combine the benefits of both for the end user." The solution is described as "seamless," "efficient" & "enabling the fastest possible workflow to move content from point of capture to a school’s website." (link); Another Learfield deal note as the multimedia rights leader has inked a new contract at Louisville's KFC Yum! Center to the tune of $49M over seven years. Overall, the pair will now work together through 2026-27. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Citing "significant deterioration" in its U.S. bookings in 2017, Emirates announced it will reduce its number of U.S.-inbound flights because of recent security restrictions handed down from President Trump's administration. The Dubai-based carrier will limit flights to Boston, Seattle and L.A. to twice daily and drop services to Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale to five per week. The Associated Press calls the decision: "the strongest sign yet that the new measures imposed on U.S.-bound travelers from the Mideast are taking a financial toll on fast-growing Gulf carriers that have expanded rapidly in the United States." (link)

PennLive columnist Jones examines the forgotten role former Penn State AD Joyner played in helping rehabilitate the school's brand, especially as it relates to FB. Jones posits that former FB HC O'Brien and current HC Franklin, both hired by Joyner, are most responsible for rebuilding the FB program, and refutes the notion that external forces helped persuade Joyner to hire O'Brien by observing that "Franklin was entirely Joyner's idea. ... The two are near 180-degree opposites as people. Yet, you could make a compelling case that each was the perfect man for his individual task. Joyner hired them both." Asked whether he believed the university could so quickly redefine its perception nationwide, Joyner admits he was skeptical yet hopeful. "Those coaches and student-athletes at that time certainly were aware of a very difficult and unfortunate situation. But they knew they had a job to do and they kept doing the job they were there for. I just saw that strength in those students and coaches every day." Ultimately, Jones concludes that Joyner "made his share of missteps as anyone thrown into a job in such circumstance might. But he served his university when it needed him most." (link)
Pittsburgh FB has received a $2M gift from Steven and Kathy Guttman, the largest donation ever received by the Pitt Football Championship Fund. AD Lyke: "Though I have only been in Pittsburgh a few weeks, it has been awesome to meet our loyal donors and even more inspiring to see their generosity positively impact the lives of our student-athletes. The Guttman's investment not only emphasizes that sentiment, it underscores how vital philanthropic support is to our competitive success. We are grateful for Kathy and Steven's belief in the leadership of coach (Pat) Narduzzi and the trajectory of our football program." Steven Guttman is the founder of Storage Deluxe Management Company and formerly served as chairman and CEO of Federal Realty Investment Trust. (link)
More than 48 hours later, Stanford indicates it still has not seen a copy of the complaint filed by UCF MBB HC Dawkins, who is seeking more than $7M in damages stemming from his dismissal from The Farm last spring. Stanford questions the backloading of Dawkins' contract at UCF (after the first two years; the same length of time he had left on his Stanford deal), which the school suggests maximizes his former employer's financial liability. Stanford does not address dropping of a mitigation clause from the contract that Dawkins says he agreed to, which would have put Stanford on the hook for the remaining $2.3M of his deal. (link)
More HC Notes: Clemson MBB HC Brownell sees his deal extended by one year to 2021, but maybe more notable is the decrease of his buyout from $3M to $1.7M, which drops to $850K in May of 2019, then $425K in 2020. (link); UConn AD Benedict hires former North Dakota Swim HC Maiello whose program was cut in Grand Forks last month. (link); Kansas State Women's Soccer HC Dibbini receives a two-year contract extension after leading the Wildcats to a 4-9-3 mark in its first year of full competition. (link); Mid-Major Madness' Mitchell writes on the move of former MBB HC Hayford from Eastern Washington to Seattle U. & the future potential of the Redhawks. (link); New Texas FB HC & former Houston boss Herman says he never lied to anyone at UH last year as his name was involved in a couple of high-profile HC openings. (link); Louisville WBB HC Walz to lead the U23 USA squad. (link); Former LSU MBB HC Jones lands on the bench at Nevada. (link)
Rhode Island MBB HC Hurley pens a piece in SI.com about the abrupt closure announcement for his alma mater, prep powerhouse St. Anthony HS in NJ, where his father racked up a career record of 1,185-125, 28 state titles, four national titles and enshrinement in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Explains how crushed he and his brother would have been had their dad taken an offered AC position at Xavier prior to their opportunity to play for him, bemoans the declining influence of urban Catholic programs (relative to AAU) to help inner city kids receive college opportunities, and, regarding a possible alumni gathering declares: "I’m not sure what the NCAA rules are about a 44-year-old man running against a high school kid, but I will not be denied. I will have one last moment where my dad coaches me." (link)
Fox Sports personality Travis with an interesting read titled, "What happens if there's too much good content?" Of course, Travis takes a swipe at ESPN, but also admits "it's not just ESPN that's having trouble bringing in the same audience that it has produced in the past." Travis' hypothesis is that the American public has reached "peak media consumption" & therefore, in order for something new to win consumer bandwidth, something old has to go. "And the end result is this -- everyone's audiences are declining. The era of growth will soon be over if it isn't already. It's about to get much more brutal in the media trenches. The expansion of TV everywhere made media content explode, but the era of a rising tide lifting all boats is over. Now many boats are about to capsize." More. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Idaho has received a one-year exemption from the state board of ed that would allow it an additional $1M in athletics expenditures for FY17, bringing the total for the year to $1.9M, as the school transitions to FCS play. A deficit of $900K is expected for FY17, primarily driven by playing a regional FB schedule and a decline in student fees and donations. UI hopes to reduce the deficit by increasing enrollment and getting approval to increase student fees. The board declined a request for a four-year exemption. (link)
Former Iowa Senior Assoc. AD Meyer tells a jury that she never yelled or screamed after learning about the termination of her partner, former Field Hockey HC Griesbaum. "I asked a hard and very direct question. Why are we firing our best coach? It makes no sense." It was Meyer's second day of testimony in her discrimination lawsuit against the school, and she was responding to an attorney's opening statement which claimed Meyer berated Hawkeyes AD Barta during a staff meeting, at which point she could have been fired. Meyer admits there was "passion" in her voice, but says it was within her role as SWA to ensure women were receiving equal treatment. She cites MBB HC McCaffery and wrestling HC Brands, saying their "antics...were nothing compared to [Griesbaum]," adding: "I was never aware of firing a coach with a winning record. It just didn't add up." More details from Meyer's testimony. (link)
North Dakota Women's Hockey student-athlete Menke pens for The Players' Tribune: "The Death, and Life, of a Hockey Program." Menke recounts finding out the news via Twitter that her sport was being cut while stretching in the training room and the disappointment that ensued when HC Idalski confirmed it: "We traveled far from home to give everything we had to chase our dreams and be a part of this program. ... I met so many little girls at our games. I gave them sticks and pucks and took selfies in hopes that they would go home and remember how much fun they’d had watching us play. In hopes that they would go home and tell their mom they wanted to play hockey like I had all those years ago. Now there will be a generation who won’t have that opportunity." (link)
Louisiana Monroe's Brown Stadium will get a $5M renovation that includes construction of a new track and soccer field, new locker rooms and coaches' offices for both program's, equipment storage areas, and restrooms, as well as upgrades to the press box and parking lot. AD Wickstrom: "I am excited for our student-athletes, coaches and community about this project. We have been working on making this project a reality the last four years. I want to thank the donors who have made commitments to the project, the students, the Convention and Visitors Bureau and a special thanks to Dr. Bruno for working with us to help get this facility approved and underway." Spring 2018 is the goal for completion. (link)

(link); Iowa State leaders would like to select a new Prez by October of this year as outgoing boss Leath is headed to Auburn. (link); Arkansas State will begin to narrow its pool of Chancellor candidates, some interesting names who have applied: Ohio EVP/Provost Benoit, UT Arlington VP of Student Affairs Quinnan, Wichita State Provost Vizzini & former Temple Prez Theobald. (link); State of Illinois Comptroller Mendoza on the state's higher ed funding framework, "It’s unsustainable. At some point the entire university system will collapse."
