Texas Prez Fenves dished on a couple of key issues for Longhorns Athletics yesterday, including voicing his support for AD Perrin, "I think Mike has done a very good job. We had some real problems to solve, and he's solved them. We've made some important coaching transitions, baseball and football in particular, and he's done that very well." Fenves expects Perrin to be in place through the 2017 calendar year & notes the agreement between the two is to have Perrin serve until the end of the 2017-18 competitive seasons. Does not expect the Big 12 to expand "in the foreseeable future," also comments, "I understand the atmosphere & optics" of spending $10,500 per new FB locker & $10M overall on upgrades, but, "We've got one of the best young coaches in the country ... and we promised we would give him the tools to be successful." (link)
Days prior to officially becoming AD Emeritus, former Florida boss Foley voiced his displeasure with UF General Counsel Keith for including this line, "There was diversity in the group of sitting athletic directors whom President (Kent) Fuchs identified in the exploration of interest," within the minutes of a meeting on the hiring of a new AD in Gainesville. Foley: "Good morning. I woke up this morning disappointed in myself because I gave in way too easily on those minutes. The minutes you have produced that give the impression diversity was sought or was part of the process do not have integrity as this is not true ... And if the General Counsel of (UF) thinks it is ok to have the search committee sign off on something that is not factually accurate this is extremely disappointing. […] You can wordsmith any way you want Jamie but the fact of the matter is what you are wordsmithing, while technically true, the reality is something totally different. Goes back to the conversation we had the other day. YOU think it is important that some constituency (Public? Board of Trustees?) believe diversity was part of the process so you include and defend as being technically accurate which makes it ok. It is not ok in my book and as I said, disappointing." Keith responded that the diversity point was Prez Fuchs' "not mine." Also noted in the article, three UF leaders, including Executive Assoc. AD Tealer, were charged with interviewing the six finalists for the job. More. (link)
Former pro sports executive Dee is reportedly now "front runner" to become the new AD at Boston College. TMGCollegeSports.com's Blaudschun says BC Prez Leahy is "leaning towards" hiring Dee, who was most recently CEO of the San Diego Padres. Of note, Dee was previously Prez of Fenway Sports Group, an investment company with close ties to BC. Blaudschun: "...nothing is official until the deal is finalized, which could come as early as Tuesday." (link)
The AD search at Long Beach State is drawing toward a conclusion & four candidates remain: UC Santa Barbara Deputy AD Fee, UC Riverside Executive Assoc. AD/SWA Lucas, USC Senior Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Services El Shahawy & LBSU Senior Assoc. AD for Major Gifts & Resource Allocation Stickney. No indication on a timeline moving forward, but one key issue facing the 49ers is the exit of WBB HC Wynn & her full staff for Washington, plus the desire of many WBB student-athletes to transfer. (link)
New UNLV AD Reed-Francois, the first hispanic female AD at the FBS level: "There’s a great sense of enthusiasm and momentum in the community and at UNLV, and I’m honored to join this university and work with our coaches, staff, and student-athletes to build on the solid foundation in place." Reed-Francois' deal to lead the Rebels is five years at $350K annually, will oversee the Thomas & Mack Center, as well as Sam Boyd Stadium, as part of her portfolio. Presser today at 2pm PST. (link); The Las Vegas Review-Journal's Anderson notes five key questions/challenges awaiting Reed-Francois: 1) Plans for the Thomas & Mack Center & Sam Boyd Stadium; 2) Understanding the state of MBB; 3) Fundraising approach; 4) UNLV to a 'Power 5' league; and, 5) Importance of Olympic sports. (link); Virginia Tech AD Babcock on Reed-Francois' departure from Blacksburg, "When people (here) found out, they were, like, 'Dang, Whit, you have to go back to work now.'" More from the Daily Press' Teel. (link)
South Carolina State selects Danley to be its new AD. A former Auburn FB student-athlete, Danley has spent the last two years at SLD Sports Marketing Group. From 2010-2012, Danley served as AD at Alabama State and sued the university claiming wrongful termination. Danley was awarded $140K, but the verdict was subsequently overturned by the Alabama Supreme Court which argued that Alabama State is protected by sovereign immunity as a state entity. SCSU Prez Clark: "With his many years of experience in athletics administration, marketing and fundraising, I believe Mr. Danley is poised to enhance the S.C. State athletics program. … I look forward to him demonstrating his strong talents and abilities by improving the overall management of athletics, including building a more financially sound, revenue-generating program that focuses on fundraising and expanding the fan experience." Newly named Kansas State AD Taylor says that as far back as 2004, when he accompanied North Dakota State on a MBB game, he felt a connection to Manhattan and viewed K-State as a destination job. "This is a dream come true. A goal of mine when I first started in this business was to have an opportunity to be at a Power 5 institution as a director of athletics. ... I've done my research on this place for a long time." After returning to Manhattan for a 2013 FB game, Taylor says he "saw the changes and transformation of what's gone on at this campus and this athletic department and I told myself at that point that if John Currie would ever leave, I was going to do everything I can to put myself in position to get this opportunity." Taylor adds that his first 30 to 45 days will be spent talking to people in the department to discern what is working and identify areas of improvement. "I'm not going to make a decision by myself. ... I seek input and understand solutions. At some point, I'm going to have to make the decision, but it's all about listening and learning about the culture." (link); Here are a number of additional links associated with yesterday's introduction of Taylor. While watching the presser live, I found it interesting how quickly he praised the leadership of Interim AD Veatch & remarked how he looked forward to forming a strong pairing with the longtime Wildcats senior leader. While being interviewed in connection to the Alston/Jenkins lawsuit brought against the NCAA and several member conferences, Kentucky AD Barnhart, Texas Prez Fenves, former Purdue AD Burke, Richmond AD Gill and Wake Forest Prez Hatch argue that the NCAA should avoid moving in a direction which would ultimately result in paying student-athletes. Fenves told interviewer and Virginia professor Elzinga that he could not "comprehend how athletics would be part of university life" if athletes were to be paid, while Barnhart contended that most Kentucky fans enjoy the idea of supporting a student-athlete's education but would be averse to "paying their salary." Meanwhile, Hatch posits that trustees "would not buy" a system in which student-athletes were paid, even if it only included FB and MBB players, while noting that such a model would make providing full scholarships in non-revenue sports cost-prohibitive. Gill goes a step further, calling a so-called pay-for-play model "catastrophic," adding: "I think that will ultimately undermine the reason why higher education is involved in intercollegiate athletics in the first place. ... I think if you're paying them to play athletics, I think it is inconsistent with the idea of what a student-athlete is." (link)
In response to an increased number of student-athlete transfers, the NCAA forms the DI Transfer Working Group. Chaired by South Dakota State AD Sell, the group's primary focus will be supporting academic success. Sell: "Transfer issues can be very complex. This group is comprised of experienced leaders who will examine the issue with the best interest of student-athletes in mind. We look forward to collaborating on this issue with the more than 50 presidents and chancellors who serve on both the DI Board of Directors and the Presidential Forum, who will offer their top-level perspective." The group also includes Ole Miss AD Bjork, Iowa AD Barta, MAC Commish Steinbrecher and Colorado AD George. (link)
As Richmond AD Gill prepares to reach the five-year milestone, he tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that UR fits his values and he has no immediate plans to move on. Going forward, he explains that several new projects are in the works, including a new tennis facility which breaks ground on May 1, and a lower level Robins Center project slated to begin on January 1. "We'll essentially have a new football locker room that's twice as big as the one we have. We'll double the size of our training room. We will have a new men's lacrosse locker room. We'll redo our main weight room as well." Gill also discusses a regionalization concept in which MBB, WBB and FB would play in their respective leagues, and Olympic sports would participate in a regional confederation to reduce travel costs. "I'm open to discussing anything as long as we kind of have the integrity of the conference. Because I think being able to compete for a conference championship year in and year out is very, very important, and then access into the NCAA Championship. So any model that keeps those two things together, I'm open to discussing." (link)

Eye Opener of the Day: USF inks a unique 10-year multimedia rights deal with Tampa Bay Entertainment Properties (TBEP), an outfit run by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Vinik. TBEP gets "exclusive rights to all commercial multimedia sports marketing, sponsorship, and respective inventory possessed by USF Athletics. Included among those is the exclusive right to secure naming rights for the USF Sun Dome and all USF owned inventory related to audio, television, print, social media and game entitlements." Value of the deal: $29M over 10 years. USF's rights are currently with IMG College. (link)
Savannah State brass confirm Tigers athletics plans to move back down to the DII ranks. Prez Dozier says the decision comes after months of review & fits best for her institution academically. Two years is the timeline with no impact on scholarships volume expected. No word on where SSU will land from a conference affiliation standpoint in DII. (link)
Another trio of interesting articles from the most recent SBJ, released yesterday: Part II of the media roundtable from the MBB Final Four features a conversation between Yahoo's Forde, CBS' Elmore, ESPN's Williams, USA Today's Wolken & others on the need for additional compensation for student-athletes & rights to their name & likeness while in college is a sticking point. Wolken: "It’s this American thing that we all love capitalism unless it comes to sports. When it comes to sports, we like socialism." Elmore argues for a greater emphasis on the education student-athletes are receiving. More. (link); The panel dissected the value of student-athletes being highly integrated into the overall student body at a time when they seem to be more removed. (link); LaVar Ball was also a topic of debate. (link)
HC Notes: New Mexico State AD Moccia turns to Wichita State AHC & former Bowling Green HC Jans as the new MBB boss in Las Cruces. (link); LIU Brooklyn AD Cohen inks former UMass MBB HC Kellogg to oversee the Blackbirds program. FB HC Meyer ($4.61M) and MBB HC Matta ($3.39M) were the two highest paid employees at Ohio State in 2016, according to data released by the university, which indicates that 13 OSU employees surpassed $1M in earnings for the year. Among those are AD Smith, who made $1.98M and Prez Drake, who made $1.04M including a $200K bonus. Culley, the university's general counsel, was the highest paid administrator, taking in $1.27M. Just three women, none of whom surpassed the $1M mark, are among OSU's 50 highest paid employees. (link)
Tulane AD Dannen hires Rice Assoc. AD for Marketing Woodson as the new Assoc. AD for External Operations for the Green Wave. Woodson has been with the Owls for two-plus years, which followed stints at Richmond - as Asst. AD for Marketing & Fan Engagement - and UMKC. (link)

Harvard Prez Faust says she's highly involved in the review of Athletics after two men's programs were cited for creating & distributing sexually explicit documents about their female peers. Faust: "Bob Scalise has been consulting very closely with me about the planned climate survey, and I think that’s a really important and serious undertaking. And as you know, he has now chosen a group of consultants, a company to work on that, and I’m eager to see their results and their suggestions, and I know he’s committed to working on that." The National Consortium for Academics & Sports is conducting a survey within the Crimson department to review its culture. Focus groups are also in execution. (link)
Miami (FL) AD James discusses a number of topics on local sports radio, saying the decision to add a 10th FB AC and early signing day is a "big win" for student-athletes. James also calls the elimination of two-a-days a "no-brainer," adding: "Everyone wants what's best for the student-athletes. There wasn't any pushback or negotiation." On the construction of a new indoor FB practice facility, James says the university is still raising funds. "We are in a position where the campus felt comfortable moving forward with the project, but we could still use a little help." (link)
San Antonio voters next month will decide whether to approve Proposition 3, a measure which would allocate $10M to UTSA to support the construction of an athletic complex which would include locker rooms and a medical area. UTSA AD Hickey: "It's basically helping to finish off the investment that the city and county made here (in 2013). ... If we had a soccer tournament here right now or a gigantic track meet we have no place for the athletes to dress or change. We don't have a covered medical area. The trainers would have to set up under the stands." While Texas law prohibits state funding to be allocated to college athletics, Proposition 3 has been bundled with the bond which includes a major reinvestment in the city's infrastructure, parks and open space improvement. (link)
More details on the Wichita State-Under Armour deal: Baseball, Golf & WBB will wear UA for uniforms, effective July 1, MBB will stick with Nike through 2018-19, Volleyball & Softball with Adidas through 2020-21. All Shockers programs will don UA for practice gear starting next year. AD Boatright: "Wichita State has long needed to brand itself with consistency and uniformity. Our agreement with Under Armour gives us that, and our student-athletes will get the best and most innovative competition and training apparel available." Still no financial terms mentioned, other than they may change with WSU's move to the AAC. (link)
An internal investigation at Northern Kentucky revealed of the MBB team in 2015: "Complaints of sexual coercion. A locker room culture lacking in respect for others and promoting immature behavior. And 'team time.' ... 'Team time' meant players were going after women on campus who made themselves available for sexual favors." Lots more here, including the details of a lawsuit filed by a female student alleging sexual assault against a trio of MBB players in 2015 which, The Cincinnati Enquirer's Pilcher notes, led to some heavier than usual involvement from school officials. Board of Regents Chair Boehne: "We’re talking about the high-profile basketball team here. We wanted to make sure everything was done right. There is clearly no cover-up here. I am very comfortable with the way this was all handled." (link)
